USC recruit O.J. Mayo, generally recognized as the best high school basketball player in the country, has been charged with possession of marijuana. As noted by Larry Brown Sports, the Associated Press is reporting:Mayo was among four males cited on misdemeanor marijuana possession charges in Huntington, West Virginia, late last night.
Cabell County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Adams says officers serving a search warrant at a house pulled over a Cadillac they deemed suspicious and Mayo was a passenger.
He says the driver had a small amount of marijuana on him and there was marijuana in a spare set of shoes in the back of the car.
Mayo is a supremely talented player whose commitment to USC is widely seen as evidence that the Trojans can become a basketball powerhouse. But he's been in trouble before, most recently for bumping a referee who ejected him from a game.
UPDATE: Charges were dropped.

OJ MAYO is a thug and a criminal.
He left his school in Cincinnati, the people that supported him and his teammates to jump high schools, this is all too common in h.s. now. There was a day that you played for your hometown h.s. Go ahead and give him a four year free ride USC, so he can play ONE YEAR, get drafted by the TRAIL BLAZERS.... ERRRR Trail GANGSTAH'S and get arrested again. Another reason to hate the THUGNESS the NBA has become. Baseball season cannot get here soon enough.

This guy is just like Randy Moss - you'll hear a lot about his abilities, but a lot more about his lack of respect for people, law, and human nature...
Just another loser who will get a chance to have a fine education but will end up in prison because he's a thug...

This is the kid that everyone defended when he knocked a ref, now is there evidence he is out of control? The kid hasn't even gotten to college and already in trouble with the law...imagine when he is put on that USC list of athletes that can do anything. Before anyone wants him in the NBA they better look at his maturity and character.

No offense to USC, but his commitment to USC shows how, despite being one of the best prospects in America, none of the elite programs want to touch him.

Im so sorry Chris that there arent many tough in your face white basketball players in the NBA. Would you call him a part of the "THUGNESS" you speak of if there were? Was Larry Bird a THUG player because his toughness and courage was evident every game night. However, I agree with you on the high school point, there was a time where you played for your hometown and your career was followed as a youngster on up through hs in the local papers. As one who got recruited to go to Oak Hill but turned them down, I will tell you that it was one of the worse decisions I have ever made as far as my career. When my school days were all done the best scholarship offer I received was a full ride to Appalachain State, or a partial to Pitt, when I was more than capable of competing on the big stage, at least in the minds of the town and local paper. These kids have stars in their eyes the first time they speak to that big time coach at a special camp that tells them, "[they] can play in the league one day]" and will stop at nothing to make that a reality.

Action Brown: Why play the race card? The guy's reputation is what he made it to be. And, face it, the NBA is renown for it's thugery - black, white whatever.

You guys are talking about playing for your hometown. He left Cincy to graduate from his hometown team. So, where is your point? I was at the game where he bumped the ref. It was two t's that should not have been called and the ref should get a grammy for the fall. In years past even before Mayo everytime Huntington High goes to Charleston the refs try to cheat them. Give the kid a break hes been sought after for how many years every little mistake he makes is magnified a millon times over. Was you guys perfect in hs or did your mistakes just not get picked up by national news?

Getting caught with a little bit of weed is not reason enough to call a 17 year old a thug. He didn't beat anyone, or steal anything. I think you are calling him a thug because he is African American, and riding in a Caddy. Are you really going after a minor? I'm not sure if the word "thugness" is even in the English language. So saying you hate the thugness that the NBA has become sounds pretty retarded. Now if you said you have to hate the way the NBA is being over ran by thugs, you might have a point. Just because there are a few bad apples in the NBA, doesn't mean that the whole league is full of thugs. Baseball is full of cheaters, and liars so don't hold those players in such high regard. I still would be willing to bet that you wouldn't call OJ Mayo a thug to his face. If you did I think you might get your ass kicked by a seventeen year old, but fighting or verbally assaulting a seventeen year old would make you a thug. P.S just did a spell check and thugness is definitely not a word.

I knew their would be someone coming up with the racist card. Most people would be happy getting a free college education instead of working in factories for the rest of their lives but if said person makes a mistake its because of thier skin color! Get real people please

No where in that article did it say he was found with anyt pot on him, or even that he tested positive for pot all it said was it was in a car he was in. And as for a few of you people you arnt even looking at the issue your making it out to be a race thing by using words like thug, and white boy. The simple fact is he is a 17 year old kid that, god forbid made a mistake. Let it go the courts will punish him accordingly.

Hey guys, where's the compassion? The kid had a little weed on him...a victimless crime, trying to have some fun...making a mistake. But let's not confuse this minor infraction with anything violent or criminal...just a youthful indiscretion.
Did any of you make all the right choices when you were a teenager? He's no different. Would you judge yourselves or your own kids as harshly?

That bastard did nothing but hurt basketball while in this city. Beating up on women and thugging with his homies while his coach at NCH looked the other way, was Mayo's protocol. I hope the prick never makes it anywhere but MacDonalds.

Who ever said that sportsmanship and character are required to play professional sports - any sport? As long as your are among the best in the nation (or South America, Japan, etc.), you are assured of a spot in the NBA, NFL, or whatever. Even colleges and prep schools have gotten into the act - check out the h.s. senior basketball player from a small town in Mass. who stab a partygoer in the back. As a punishment (?reward), he was sent to a prestigious prep school in Maine and may be picked up by Providence College. I wonder what would have happened to this young man if he were not a h.s. basketball star?

O.J. Mayo in trouble how could that be? Did he beat up his girlfriend, hit a teacher, get a F" in finger painting,oh he got high on weed? Once he goes to the NBA hell put a whole game check on cocaine instead of the ganja. Go figure! He should of stayed and played for North College Hill Trojans then went and played for the (USC Trojans). And he could of should of been the next great thing to sliced bread. Prove me wrong O.J. Mayo Prove Me wrong.
