Unless you've been living in a cave, you know that radio superstar Don Imus has been fired for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos." Well, apparently golfer Annika Sorenstam has been living in a cave. Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel recounts this conversation he had with Sorenstam:
Bianchi: "Annika, some derogatory comments were made about the Rutgers women's basketball team the other day; obviously, you've heard about them . . ."
Sorenstam: "No, I haven't."
Bianchi: "You haven't?"
Sorenstam: "No."
Bianchi: "Never mind."
Sorenstam: "Sorry."
Bianchi writes that Sorenstam's ignorance demonstrates "the colossal problem facing female athletes in their ongoing battle against sexism in the sports arena." He thinks the fact that she doesn't know about the Imus-Rutgers flap shows that female athletes today don't do enough to take a stand against sexism, and that Sorenstam ought to be better informed.
I understand why Bianchi's reaction is to think Sorenstam is clueless about what's going on in the world, but on the other hand, couldn't it also just mean she focuses on her golf and doesn't let anything else distract her? Not every athlete has to take a stand on every issue.

Talk about Bianchi making a story out of nothing. Maybe Annika was just smart enough to dodge having to say anything about the issue.

I agree. In fact, the speculating writer shows a mind-numingly narrow view of what's important - the latest shock-jock flap or your own life. Whether Annika heard about it is entirely meaningless, and whether she should take a stand against sexism in sports is beside the point - her playing against men is the point, and her efforts to be the best possible golfer she can be is what counts in HER life and will inspire young girls to do the same.

We all know who Annika is, remember V, J. and his stupid remarks? she is a class act. The part I like best is she said "sorry" for not knowing what he needed, but I noticed he didn`t for spreading the trash! Now we all know who Mike Bianchi is, and what he`s about!!!!Trash is as trash does! Sorry Forest.

The Television and Print media are full of negative story and not every wishes to indulge in sensationalizing everything that goes wrong in the world.
I am pretty sure millions of African-Americans hadn't ever heard of Don Imus until he degraded the Rutger's WOmen Team. Just like I am sure when she was degraded for competing against men, most people had no idea that had happened as well.
It's her prerogative whether she wants to address the issue or even hear about it. There are enough people doing that already.

I have a friend in Alabama who didn't know about the Imus/Rutgers incident and I am sure she could care less either.
There are plenty of people who never heard of DOn Imus before that, so there is a chance there are still people who didn't. Move on please.

I wish I did'nt know about it. This guy is an idiot. The media isnt happy unless there starting BS. Good for her for not knowing. Personally I could care less about Don Imus and the Rutgers Team. They made something out of nothing. Maybe they needed the publicity. I agree with what a lot of people are saying if the comment had been made about a group pf whites or an individual white the comment would have not even been taken this far. This is a great country we live in. By the way I hope the Rutgers team had fun at there "getting Don Imus fired" victory party while dancing to such well written and meaningful music by artists such as Snoopdog, Young Joc, TI, etc. Should I go on?

Most of the people who have written post on here are not only idiots but moral cretins. Don Imus should have been fired and he was!! Get over it. why arn't you worried about the feelings of these exemplary young women? They have done nothing but set a very high standard for all of our nation's youths nad the were slandered in the worst way by an old ass white A-hole who is very rich. Yet you think he is the victim here? Well one thing is for certain, none of you will ever attend rutgers because your are far too stupid!! One more thing, the white proplr who fired Imus did so because multi-national corporations that are marketing their peoducts to the world - which is overwhelmingly non white - do not want their brands associated with racist garbbage like Don Imus spouted! So they canned his old white cirny ass. All of you trailer park trash can whine all you want but the I-Man is gone; even his own wife is ashamed of him, and he's ashamed of himelf. So go on and get a life and stop trying to defend the indefensible. All of you are trying to dismiss and play down the importance of what his slander against the Rutgers women are not only morons but racists to boot. It is all so obvious. I say thank god you are to stupid to ever be in any position of power in this society. Operah Winfrey is the most influential woman in the world and Condoleeza Rice is the most powerful. They wanted Imus fired and his old tired white ass is gone and there ain't nothing that you know nothing racist white trash can do about it. The white people who run this country are ashamed of you...including Don Imus. You are just too stupid to know it!!!

I wonder if those Black girls on Rutgers team ever said the words stupid white b----. I wonder if they ever felt violated by all the Black artists and men that call all Black female ho's. Such a severe punishment for such a small on air slip of the tongue. You know it was and everyone has had such thoughts slip out at the wrong time. As a white I am offended by the fact that people like Jesse and Al can demand our jobs for such things and they themselves show such hatred for whites. And that is exactly what it is. They hate whites. I did not here them issue an apology to the white players on the Duke team and they had loads of bad things and name to call them without anyones word except someone that turns out to be, ironicaly, a paid ho. It is time that whites stand up for what is fair and equal treatment because we are the ones who are being discriminated against. It is wrong to say whitey caused you any discomfort and then go to a club and party away to the Black artist tune and rap about ho's and bitches and rape and on and on. Anyone out there with enough fotitude to stand with me, esp Blacks. I bet not many.

In the end, Imus will get another multi million dollar radio job, the Rutgers women will parlay their individual talents into pro positions on albeit obscure women's pro basketball teams, or become doctors, lawyers, or whatever suits their abilities and desires, Sharpton and Jackson will scour the country looking for "racial" topics (or fan them when there's a lull in the national headlines) in pursuit of their shameless self-promotion as self-apponted vigilantes and spokesmen until the media puts a sock in their mouths, and a year from now no one on the planet will give two wits. The more things change the more they remain the same.

Poor Annika. She does what she does and minds her own business. How utterly refreshing.
But the truth is the Imus incident may be the opening certain individuals needed to launch an attack on free speech. A 'hit' list, if you will, has been revealed.
Check out at mediamatters.com. Every slight, how ever small, is ammo for an attack on a Savage or Boortz or Hannity or Orielly or Limbaugh or John Gibson or Olberman and on an on. All need happen is a misstatement, even a tiny one, a slip of the tongue, which can be blown into a media storm, then convince advertisers to bolt, the networks flat out cave, the talk show host is readily thrown under the bus. Orielly and Limbaugh have both chatted exactly about this at some length. They can see the targets on their backs.
The witch hunts have begun and you will see more and more of this. Former Gov. Tommy Thompson was nailed yesterday for a supposed misstatement in front of a Jewish group. Today he was out "explaining."
But there are those who can say provocative statements. For instance, Obama in a speech linked Imus's words to the VT terror. That in my opinion is outrageous. But I bet no one, no one will say a word of objection about Obama's hyperbole even though there is no linkage in reality whatsoever, none.
Had one of the right wing talkers said something as 'provocative' and all hell would have broken loose again.
I am sure doing what Annika did is her best course. She gets to go home when her season is over. And home for her is far from here.
TJ.

I give her credit for not taking the bait. It was a set up, leaving her to identify the issue and then respond as to why it is an issue. Since he didn't follow through to clarify his question, it raises a question. Since he then followed through with his perspective on her response in his article, the question is answered. I think Anna is smarter than he is.
