Greg Oden Is a Hack, Commits 10 Fouls In First Summer League Game

Looks like Blazers fans better get used to seeing their top draft pick sitting on the bench.

Greg Oden's first summer league game didn't exactly go as well as expected. The big man was a little too aggressive in his debut, picking up a ridiculous 10 personal fouls, before fouling out with just six points in twenty minutes of play.

[Oden] picked up three quick fouls in the opening three minutes of his professional debut Friday night in the Las Vegas summer league and fouled out with 10 fouls.

"It's amazing," said Oden smiling. "I usually get thrown out after five."

League rules allow 10 fouls before disqualification.

What's amazing is that someone on the Celtics didn't start throwing punches around foul number eight or so. I know the Summer League is all about getting the younger players used to the NBA game, thus the "10 fouls before disqualification" rule. But has anyone else ever fouled out of one of these games? I mean 10 fouls in twenty minutes is a lot of fouls. Who knew that Oden idolized the likes of Rick Mahorn and Greg Kite?

Hopefully for the Blazers, this is something that the rookie will grow out of. As Nate Jones has mentioned here before, every Finals but one since 1999 has featured either Shaq or Tim Duncan (read: dominant big man), so the Blazers were wise to draft Oden first overall. It just may be a while before he's ready to play defense at the NBA level.
