Not only are NFL teams getting tough on players this off-season, but TV networks are getting tough on ex-players, too. Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell tells USA Today that Bill Maas, who was arrested over the weekend on felony drug and weapons charges, wasn't expected to work as a Fox broadcaster this season anyway, and now definitely "will not be coming back to Fox in any capacity."
That is a remarkable fall for Maas, who at one point was considered one of the up-and-coming talents in the football broadcasting business. At the end of the 2000 season, Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated called Maas and his play-by-play partner, Sam Rosen, the best announcers in the NFL.
But Maas's skills as an announcer seemed to erode in recent years, and now his broadcasting career is almost certainly over. If you're as talented an announcer as, say, Marv Albert, you can keep working after getting into trouble in your personal life. But if you're Bill Maas, you'd better keep your nose clean.

Of course Z loved Maas. They both spewed the same anti-Redskin vitriol.

Maas was the most god-awful announcer. The man simply would not shut the F*$% up. He talked over everyone, made some of the dumbest anaylsis ever. I once heard him say that "when it rains the balls get wet". Really do they... now that's a shocker. This is the best arrest that the NFL has had in months.

I couldn't be happier that Maas got arrested. He's so full of himself. He's got a nice negburns curl going in that photo, however.

I would get excited about FOX losing one of it's god-awful color guys, even if it wasn't a virtual lock that Maas will be replaced by another insufferable blowhard meathead.

No Tank Johnson rules in the Broadcasting business huh? One strike and you're out. They better have let this idiot go, because how could any Fox Commentator dare, in the future, ever even mumble displeasure at the NFL for their long standing Thug Encouraging behaviour in their Teams Players.
Bengals, Johnson, PacMan, its endless and had Fox not done something here, no way could any of them ever cast shame on the Teams that continue to offer 3 and 4 and 5 strike counts before you're out.
Bravo Fox for cutting this idiot loose. Shame on you for not knowing he was a party animal in the first place. And apparently a gun toting party animal.

LOL @ "insufferable blowhard meatheads"! Gawd, ain't it the truth?? And Maas, along with Brian Baldinger, constitute the two worst offenders. Maas is (was) an absolute moron—simply unlistenable—and exactly why DO network executives hire these talentless cretins? I mean, if yer gonna hire ex-jocks, why not hire halfway decent ones? There're only about a million of 'em out there to choose from. That's a constant and deeply disappointing mystery. And also, "Dr. Z" must be an ass-kissing moron himself to have made that assessment about Rosen/Maas. Rosen is a complete hack, and Maas an out-and-out goon. Jeez, it's enough to make me not want football to start again. Oh well, I started turning off the sound a few years ago, anyway.

It's disappointing that a guy who went to the same high school as me becomes engaged in this type of stupid activity. However, I am so glad that he won't be broadcasting Eagles games anymore. I had to put the radio on while watching the tv because his broadcasting skills were awful!

LOL at some of the comments above regarding Bill Maas' commentary and analysis..How about Theisman and his "Look at him catch with his hands" or "Look at how he runs with his legs"...ROFL..It would have been the height of hypocrisy for FOX to keep Maas on board - glad he is gone. However, where are all the sympathy whores out there demanding Bill get treatment and help for his addiction? Oh yeah, he's a white guy - he's not a "Po Bruva raised in da Hood" so he's got no excuse..LOL.
