(UPDATED) The debacle is over, and the score is 4-0 Brazil. Brazil trounced the United States today in the Women's World Cup semifinal. An own goal from Leslie Osborne got things started in the 20th minute, then Marta scored in the 27th, Christiane scored in the 56th and Marta scored again in the 79th.
This is the 23rd time Brazil and the U.S. have played in women's soccer and only the second victory for the Brazilians. Is it just a matter of time before Brazil becomes the superpower in women's soccer that it is in men's soccer? Marta's presence makes that seem quite likely: She's the best player in the world by a large margin.
The Americans will complain about the refs, especially how Shannon Boxx was sent off after getting a second yellow card on what one of the TV announcers called "The worst call we've ever seen in our lives," and I agree that it was a bad call. But it gets a little tiresome that Team USA can never lose a soccer game -- men's or women's -- without the American media complaining about the refs.
The big story will be whether coach Greg Ryan made the right choice by benching goalkeeper Hope Solo in favor of Briana Scurry. I think it was the wrong decision, but I don't think it's the reason for this result. Brazil is just the better team.

You r so right... for every sport the USA plays and loose, u North Americans just wine like a bunch of spoil brats... NOTE: the USA fans and the USA media, "the USA WAS NOT THE BETTER TEAM, with or without HOPE"... U R A BUNCH OF LOSERS...
ON ANOTHER NOTE: THE USA SHOULD DOMINATE EVERY SPORT, WHY? THE USA HAS EVERY ADVANTAGE WHEN PLAYING ANY SPORTS (PROPER FIELD, PLACE TO REST AND RELAX, FOOD, GEAR, ETC.... I CAN GO ON AND ON)...

Brazil is definitely the better team, and they deserve to move on to the finals. Brazil just plays a better, more interesting style of soccer. The US seems to rely too much on a physical game. I for one am glad the better team won. Let's see how well Germany does against these Brazilians!

I saw the US play against Brazil at the 2004 Olympics. Although overjoyed at the outcome, Brazil was definitely the better team and the US got lucky.

Going into this game with controversy planted the "Seed of Doubt" into the minds of US players and US fans. At this level, that is incomprehensible. The decision to change Keepers was unfair to the team, and truely unfair to both Brianna and Hope.
The US Coach was guilty of over-thinking, and as a result took momentum from the US side that had been building throughout the Tournament; focus shifted from the TEAM to the COACH....this game is not about the Coach...This Game is About the TEAM...
Congrats to the Brazilian Side, they were the better TEAM today. But I believe that without this controversy, the outcome would have been different.

While I agree that the US media are whiners, the call made by the referee was technically poor. It was obvious she had not seen the play, and should have consulted with her linesperson about the extent of any foul. Then, if the linesperson had not seen it either, award a free kick top whomever. The correct call was no call, but it was a little late for that. The legs got tangled, initiated by the offensive player, but the offensive player gained no advantage. Surprising to see that type of a call made at this level. Makes you wonder a little bit.

Brazil will be a soccer power in the future because they use players with talent and great soccer skills. USA has to fix the problem at the college level. College coaches are ignoreing real talent and choosing the strong physical players. European countries are learning from the influx of the brazilian players into top clubs.USA should learn this also.
USA regroup and find talent.

All I am hearing is complain over and over... the keeper, the ref, the team not prepaired to play with another keeper... come on... to all you none soccer player, wannabe soccer player on this blog.. Listen, the USA was already loosing before the ref call... also, the team practice with BOTH KEEPERS... ONCE AGAIN, THE TEAM PRACTICE WITH BOTH KEEPERS (SCURRY and SOLO)... that said the players should have been prepared to play with any one of the keepers... if the USA played the ball the way the BRAZILIANS played the ball, the keeper would have had no worries, poor defense and forward on the USA's part..

The final score is evidence that the US team was not up to scratch, and Brazil deserved the win. They were far quicker and had better skills. However, when everyone goes on about how great the Brazil team is and what a pleasure to watch they are I have to disagree.
They play incredibly rough, dirty football, and their sportsmanship is shocking.
Did anyone SEE the reaction of Cristiane after that atrocious call against Boxx??? Punching the air in blatant jubilation!
And if they're going to play a dirty, aggressive game - which is fine by me - they can't then roll on the ground in supposed agony after every single little knock and bump. Ever heard of crying wolf? The biggest complaint i've heard about soccer as a game is the way players fuss and sook and play it up to score fouls against the opposite team. I generally think this is exaggerated, but in Brazil's case, No!
Because of their foul attitudes alone, I hope Germany kick their sorry arses.

Fact: U.S. has these guys in residency for a YEAR. Fact: Brazil treats their women like 2nd class soccer players and they play like soccer should be played. Fact: With all the good soccer played out there by Clubs, ODP etc now we play like England's men of the 1960' to 90's and play KICK it to ABBY???? Come on at some point can we play the ball out of the back? Can we NOT bypass the midfield? Sorry but this is bad!!

While I am a strong supporter of U.S. soccer, Brazil was the better team today. Rayn's decision was a poor one, but the meltdown down today occured in front of the goal with the remainder of the team.

Soccer is all about team chemistry, and Ryan's gamble with goalkeepers messed up his team's chemistry. Come on! It's the semifinals!! Solo had 300 World Cup minutes without a goal. Briana, although a great keeper, still had a little rust from not playing. What are you thinking?!! Then his decisions to make defensive substitutions rather than ramp up the attack simply compounded problems. You have to give the Brazillians credit; they were wonderful to watch. But I think the US women, at full strength, and without all the head-games this goal-keeper change has created, could have given them a much better game. Bravo Brazil. Shame on you coach Ryan...

Yeah I'm probably not a "true" soccer player by your definition. But I do know what good sportsmanship is, and like I said... Brazil just didn't seem to have it. Sure they deserved to win based on their skills and the US lack thereof, but (physical game or no physical game) I still didn't like their attitude.
And its just my opinion so there's no need to start going on about "wannabe soccer losers".
And I still hope Germany wins!

Hey Anthonie - Don't be such a sore winner! (whiner) Brazil was the better team TODAY. But I believe the world rankings, the head to head record, and the number of World Cup titles speak for themselves. Much of sports is about emotion, and Brazil definitely had the edge today - kudos to them. US emotions from a keeper switch or a bad call SHOULD be better managed = easier said than done. But that is still part of the game. Now, over-coming a player deficit because of an obvious bad call = very unfortuante AND unfair. But life's not fair. Be an athletic supporter (not just an athletic supporter!) and give praise where praise is due.

Anthonie,
You should go back to school and learn how to both spell and use punctuation rather than vent your nasty anger at the bloggers and the U.S. team. The U.S. got beat by a better team. However, your comments about the USA having every advantage to dominate sounds like you are jealous of our way of life.

I have watched this blog with part amusement and part disgust. Yes, the US women lost and The Brazilian's, despite the flops, bad calls, and the US playing with 10, won. As Steve said, kudos to them.
I am disgusted, though, by the comments thrown forth by you Anthonie, enough to actually take part. I am used to reading blogs with the usual arse wipe such as yourself pitching in derogatory rhetoric but something about your obvious seething rage and anti-US diatribe astounds me.
I would guess you are a weak little man with minimal athletic involvement in your past,a probable perrenial bench warmer who hides behind his keyboard taking shots, in the only venue where you have even the faintest glimmer of hope at victory. And the shame of it is that you have simply cast your self as a bitter little F--- that uses a sporting event, a 90 minute game to take sideways shots at the United States. You my friend define pathetic...no go burn the Stars and Stripes and maybe shoot a few rounds off into the air.
