China Tells French President Nicolas Sarkozy: We Don't Want You at Opening Ceremonies

The Chinese government has published a newspaper article informing the president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, that the Chinese people don't want him to attend the Olympic opening ceremonies.

China Daily is currently running a headline reading, "Sarkozy Not Wanted at Olympics -- Poll." Below the headline is a story that says a public opinion poll shows the Chinese people overwhelmingly don't want Sarkozy to come to Beijing as a result of his pro-Tibet statements:

In the survey, 88 percent of respondents said they viewed Sarkozy's remarks as "extremely unfriendly", while an equivalent proportion said they do not welcome his presence at the opening ceremony.

More than 100,000 people have so far taken part in the poll, which is ongoing, Sina.com.cn claimed.

Obviously, online polls are always unscientific, and especially so in China, where people know the government is watching their internet usage. But the issue here isn't the voracity of the poll; it's the fact that the Chinese government is politicizing the Olympics by attacking Sarkozy. The International Olympic Committee should tell the Chinese to knock it off.
