With the Tour de France over, Alberto Contador didn't hold back from commenting on Lance Armstrong and showing how he really felt about his Astana teammate. Contador maintained three weeks of near silence about his tense relationship with Armstrong, but it was only a matter of time before he spoke out."My relationship with Lance is zero," Contador said at a news conference. "He is a great rider and had completed a great race, but it is another thing on a personal level, where I never had great admiration for him and I never will."
One day after winning his second Tour, the Spanish rider said it's good that they'll be moving on. Armstrong, a seven-time Tour winner, will ride for new Team RadioShack after the close of this season. Contador also wants to sign with another team.
"On this Tour, the days in the hotel were harder than those on the road," Contador added. "The situation was tense and delicate because the relationship between myself and Lance extended to the rest of the staff."
It didn't take long for Lance to respond to Contador's criticism, via his Twitter of course. On Monday night, Armstrong tweeted the following: "Seeing these comments from AC. If I were him I'd drop this drivel and start thanking his team. w/o them, he doesn't win."
In the end, there's no love lost as these two go their separate ways.

As with Greg Lemond last decade, Lance has had a great run and is worthy of being mentioned among the all time greats. I, for one, knew that this would happen when Lance decided to return to the peloton. Have we forgotten that Contador is the team's leader and is the best stage racer in the world at present? I feel that alot of the controvesy is a reaction to nationalistic, jingoistic banter that suggests that Lance should be allowed to win simply because he's an American. He wasn't the best and that's a fact. If he had attacked that day where Contador received so much grief, it would have been hailed as a exhibition of great drive, aggression, and panache. Contador WAS and IS the leader of that team... he earned that position and as a leader he was well within his right to take the initiative!! Now that's panache. What Astana has done to help boost Lance's admirable comeback is to totally compromise the future and structure of that team. What ever the name of the outfit will be next year is not that important. They have forsaken the loyalty of their best rider for the interests of their most popular rider. in the end, they'll likely have neither.

"... because he's an American?" Yeah, it can't possibly be that the general public was taken with his triumph over cancer. Or that we feel attached to the guy we watched marry and divorce Sheryl Crow. Or that we feel attached to the guy who shows up in our living room to talk to us about Subaru.
Fact is, we've been seeing a lot of the guy for a long time. He's a real success story and he's identifiable. Nobody thinks he's some invincible American, it's just nice to see a guy - an average, non-heritage-related guy - overcome personal adversity and be victorious on a world stage.

What a snivelling baby. Lance was more than generous in his praise for Contador. Saying he is probably better than he was at his best in the tour. There is no question that Lance has earned and deserves respect from his fellow cyclists and his teamates! Contador is a great rider but poor sportsman

Alberto Contador was selfish during the TDF. His actions cost his team a podium spot. When he attacked, he did so needlessly. He left his teammate and a third Astana spot on the podium behind. His team had every right to criticize his actions, but they chose not to. Now, after all is said and done, he steps forward with criticism for a rider who helped him win. Had Contador been as selfless as his teammates, the Astana team would have been an even brighter star at the TDF. Contador should thank his lucky stars that his teammates were not just like him. If they had reacted to his selfish behavior during the tour, that would have meant disaster for the team. Contador should be more gracious to his whole team, but especially to Lance Armstrong because he was the rider on the team who could have challenged and possibly defeated him.

Comparing Contador or LeMond to Armstrong is a gross display of ignorance. Armstrong was one of the two greatest riders of all time. Contador is, as of now, a one hit wonder. Can he repeat? Can he repeat three, four, five, six times? Contador will not have trouble finding a new team. His new team WILL have trouble finding great riders willing to work with him and for him to win another tour. Contador cost his team any chance at a 1-2-3 finish when he attacked the Shleck's and ditched Kloden... his own team member. Was he the best rider this year? Yes, no one else even close. Did he have the "right" to do that? Absolutely. Did it help him win the tour? Absolutely not (he gained ZERO time that day). Did it hurt his team? Absolutely yes. No arguing with those facts. He HELPED Shleck lock down second place. Kloden may or may not have been able to hold onto 2nd or 3rd, but thanks to Contador we did not get to find out.

Contador is a punta. He leaves his teammates to be first. He really didn't win, like in 2006, where he 'won' to someone who doped. In 2010, he'll be in the back of the race, and Lance will be #1 once more.
Lance is a true inspiration, coming back from Cancer and kicking ass from 1999-2005. He still kicks ass, causing 50%+ more ratings around the world. The Tour de France needs Lance, they can do without a whiny little Spanish guy.

How many times did Lance hold the wheel of Frank Schleck or anyone else while the "pistelero" took off on those climbs, so as not to jeopardize his win. Put Lance on another team and he's head to head with Contador... we'll see how different next year is when Contador has to do it on his own and Lance has the "team" around him!

Contador is considered the best right now because he is riding with Astana and is their best all round rider. As Lance Armstrong assembles the Radio Shack team, how many of the Astana team will go with him? If he takes Kloden, Leipheimer and Popovych, Contador will watch Andy Schleck stand on the top step. After his inability to go along with the team's strategy and what appeared to be a lack of ability to be coached at all, I can't imagine him being in high demand.
He would have been smart (and that does imply that he isn't) to hang heavy with Lance and Johann and start to learn how to get better and better. As it is, he is showing that he is indeed a very young man with the typical unsubstantiated arrogance that accompanies that group. He probably wants to be the next Indurain but for as good as he seemed to be two years ago and this year, he can't carry his jock.

I agree. It seems Lance isn't the great team mate or friend that he (or his PR machine) would lead us to believe. The celebration dinner the night before the last stage; where was Lance? Having drinks with the sponsor of his new team, Radio Shack (reported and confirmed in Velonews).
Now that's a true team mate!
The day that George Hincappie has a chance to wear the yellow jersey (for one day! George was no threat to be on the final podium!). Lance gives orders to chase down the breakaway that George is in! (reported on Versus by Phil Liggett, one of Lance's biggest supporters!)
Now that's a true friend ("Thanks for hauling my ass through France for 7 TdF victories George!)
Remeber Lance. You've got to thank your team mates for the victories, you couldn't have won without them. YOUR WORDS!
This Lance comeback was supposed to be for Cancer Awareness. The only thing I heard or saw was "Livestrong" on his helmut and bike.
Reminds be of Brett Farve. Can't stand to be out of the spotlight.

It's wasn't Armstrong that pulled away from Wiggins second to last mountain stage, but contadore making the ill advised pull away, which if he had a bke malfunction, he could not have gotten a bike to keep his lead in the race. It was also Armstrong who said he was working for the team to help get Contadore the win. I may not want to be best buds with Armstrong, but he was the professional on this showdown, and contadore better hope he has people the likes of Armstrong, Wiggins and others who helped protect him during the ride. Winning the tour is not a one man game, an dContadore would have been better served by letting what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas.

Alberto is and will be acknowledged as the amazing rider on this tour, without a doubt. But as any fan of the tour knows, without your team, and knowing when to push etc. you are nothing. Lance is a person who brings passion and excitement to the sport of biking and to do what he did in this tour was incredible. I believe him when he says, he did it for the awareness of his life passion cause. Alberto is young, will be around for many tours to come. Respect is eraned and in no way did Lance get a pass based on being American (we as a Nation have been on the hot plate for quite some time), he has it because of what e has done. That Alberto cannot acknowledge that says more about him than Lance. But hey, again he is young. I think AC did a incredible ride and only takes away from comments he has made.

Should we not question whether or not the Spanish Aberto Contador was on drugs or had some other illegal help in his win? Why don't we, just to put a little needle to the winner and really give him something to be upset about.

the holder of the leader's yellow jersey IS tested each day he's in the lead. The winner of that day's stage is also tested, as are several riders that are selected at random...
It's highly unlikely and would be ludicrous for Contador to have doped... I also don't believe that Lance had doped either.
Remember it's not the Spanish who have made accusations about Lance, it's the French

Alberto is young and immature. Regardless of his feelings, he should have kept his mouth shut. If for no other reason than to keep Lance from posting his whining on the "Bulletin Board" as incentive for 2010. Granted Lance has already commited to ride in '10 and doesn't need too many reasons to ride other than the obvious record of all records, 8th win. But in competition you never ever give your opponent anything to fight for. Ever.
Having said that, I can also say what a great race it will be when two "bitter" rivals take to the road in 2010. Makes for great press!!!
