Hello again, old friend.

For the next rotted rung on the Roger Clemens Ladder to Hell, a Houston area hospital has decided to remove Roger's name from the sports medicine institute he paid for. You couldn't remove Roger's name from that report to the right? You couldn't remove it from Mindy McCready's (assumedly) gigantic 80s looking Zack Morris cell phone?

The last Dugout of the year is after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: You Can't Kaipo Good Man Down

by BThe original title of this Dugout was "JOSH BARD TO RED SOX," because I want the skimming people to read it, too. In case you're skimming this too, Boston has reportedly reached an agreement with catcher Josh Bard for $1.7 million. Yes, if you can somehow make it to the Major Leagues with the ability to hit .200 you too can be a millionaire. They will pay you almost two million dollars to sit in the minors and suck the ass of baseball. I guess everybody else there is a millionaire and they don't want you to feel bad.

For a greater hit-count, please enjoy tonight's Dugout, a straight-forward affair about... oh you aren't falling for this anymore, it is as crooked-forward as I could make it. What we came up with is that he'd be really tall, he'd be really fast, and I think we decided he'd have sharp teeth. And he'd always be trying to get you. Something tells me that when Randy Johnson is walking the streets alone, he picks up a dangerous velocity. One you have to measure with a radar gun. Eesh.

Despite his Brettfavrian tendency to say he's done, the Big Euphemism has agreed to play another year for the Giants, and it couldn't be more appropriate.

Enjoy this tale of the scariest man imaginable. An All-Star who won 19 games for the World Series champion Pirates in 1971 and boasted a none-too-shabby lifetime ERA of 3.46, Ellis' contributions to baseball should not be forgotten, especially the contribution of pitching a no-hitter under the influence of LSD.

One of the things we get the most positive feedback about in The Dugout is our retrospective pieces about the death of a player. This will be no different, as I have prepared no less than 65 panels of comic introspection about these crazy times we've lived through, and what it truly means to pitch super well because you think the baseball is f***ing talking to you.

This morning's Dugout is In Memoriam, and after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout Struggles With The Media's Obvious Anti-Yankees Bias

by BI'm getting sick of this. The sports media world has their own Elite Liberal contingent and they're dead-set on running the name of the New York Yankees through the mud. Everywhere you click it's "the Yankees spend too much money" on this, and "the Yankees spent too much money" for that, and "Sabathia has enough money to float in the river and declare himself a sovereign nation."

Somebody on this site needs to make a stand. The Yankees are a baseball team like everybody else. Just because YOUR team can't do what they do doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to do it. Hey Royals fans, if you woke up tomorrow morning and the Royals had given 200 million to Mark Teixeira and 200 million to Manny Ramirez and signed five pitchers and got ready to destroy the AL Central next year, wouldn't you be the happiest people on Earth? Of course you would.

This morning's Dugout sets things straight and explains it all, after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Wahoo Messenger: Kerry Wood, If He Could

by BOn my Myspace page there is a picture of me posing with John Adams, the Cleveland Indians drum guy. The smile on my face will let you know how sincere my loyalties to the Indians are, and how excited I am every time I walk into Progressive Field to watch The Tribe play. Even on dollar dog day, when they substitute the normal hot dogs with these wretched, bile-soaked wieners that make your stomach feel like Sal Fasano's face. I also have mark photos with Ketchup, Mustard, and Onion.

That being said, the only transaction worth nothing from the Indians besides signing and releasing Casey Blake again for fun is the addition of Kerry Wood to the bullpen. Wood is getting $20.5 million for two years with an option for a third year.

It is in times like these when my professional loyalties must come before my recreational loyalties. Kerry Wood in an Indians uniform is still Kerry Wood, by God, and if we make it to that third year option without at least five surgeries I will consider it a glorious miracle.

This morning's Native American Dugout is after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: Watchmaker, Part One

by B
Oh my God.

Pending a physical, journeyman relief pitcher and personal performance icon Kyle Farnsworth has agreed to a two-year, $9.25 million dollar contract with the Kansas City Royals. I've spent the last two days meticulously going over the rumors, data, and transactions of baseball's Winter Meetings and have gathered them here for you in succinct, online comic form. We just started covering the Twins again recently, and here comes the news that Ron Gardenhire has his outfield for next year and it does not include Delmon Young, the young star famous for throwing a bat at somebody and for helping assault the same woman like 200 times over the last few years of our online comic.

What does this mean for the Twins? Obviously it means "we are trying to do something to light a fire under Delmon's ass so he stops playing defense like that." It could also mean Delmon being traded, hopefully to the Nationals, because that would be really hilarious and awesome.

Tonight's Dugout is after the jump. Ryan spoke of Murff in his 1999 Hall of Fame induction speech:

"He thought when he saw me at 6-foot-2 and 140 pounds, he wasn't discouraged by my build and by the way I threw the baseball as many other scouts were. Tonight's Dugout is in tribute to the man who gave so much to the game of baseball, and if you don't like what I did, pretend I wrote something heartwarming about him going to Scout Heaven and hanging out with Buck O'Neil and the little girl from To Kill a Mockingbird.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: The Mariners, Waka Waka

by BHey guys! The end of November is the perfect time for some positive content about the Seattle Mariners! November is over in like a day, so get it while you can!

Believe it or not, there are some positive things going on in Seattle. The Mariners made Don Wakamatsu the first Asian-American manager in baseball history. There might be a strip club going in 400 feet from the ballpark! They're ... uh ... getting new uniforms? No. Ichiro is getting along with his teammates! They aren't going to gang up and beat him down! Well, maybe. What else is there to get positive about in Seattle? Cobain's dead, but the Peppermint Mocha Twist is still pretty great!

The offseason is when we finally get to stop talking about teams that win and do things and get to people like the Twinkies and the M's, so pull up a chair (I assume you are standing at your computer) and enjoy tonight's late night Dugout, after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: I Beg Your Pardon

by B
Look at that guy.

I know this has been a reliably entertaining year for the Dugout, but you went almost all year, including last night's game, without covering the Twins.

He's right. With the exception of Delmon Young showing up to whip a bat or Justin Morneau showing up to participate in an abstruse Watchmen parody, we haven't featured the Twins in the Dugout. So, now that the season is completely finished, here is a Dugout about the Twins! Hooray!

Tonight's Dugout is after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: For Want Of Nails

by BWhen I was little, I wanted to be just like Lenny Dykstra. I wanted to work hard, practice every day, and earn the respect of my peers. The story, first announced on WWE.com, suggested we stay tuned to the website for more details. Unfortunately, the last few years of wrestling news have been so sad and hilariously abysmal that many wrestling fans assumed the worst in conjunction with Hardy's history of injuries and drug abuse.

Thankfully, this is one of those times when your "wrestling is fake!" comments are apropos. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online can confirm that the stairwell unconsciousness and hospital-rushage are all part of tonight's Survivor Series pay-per-view. There are also spoilers below, in case you're planning on watching:

Several sources have confirmed this as storyline and that Hardy is expected to be selling the injuries on tonight's Survivor Series show.

There is a lot of speculation this will lead to an Edge vs. Jeff Hardy feud, as Edge will be the culprit. While this feud is not confirmed, there was talk of Edge vs. Hardy at Royal Rumble, and Edge flew from Tampa to Boston last night for the show.
WWE.com has changed their story to the much less scary "Will Hardy Perform?" in reaction to the press, and to make sure the legions of Hardy Boyz fans still order the show. Hopefully they've already filmed a vignette where evil Russian Vladimir Kozlov headbutts Hardy down a flight of steps. For once, the wrestling news isn't so bad. Weird, huh?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout: The Last Starpitcher

by BA few days ago, Mike Mussina told the Yankees about his plans to retire instead of coming back to play next year, and I want to make a couple of things clear about my point of view in relation to this before you scroll to the bottom of this and leave me comments.

Yes, Mike Mussina is my least favorite player in baseball, making him my least favorite person in non-wrestling professional sports. Yes, this is because he used to be the best player in Baltimore and left to pitch for the Yankees. Yes, Mussina is one of the best pitchers of his era, and yes, my prejudices are based on jealousy, loyalty to a team I am not a part of, and irrational expectations for humanity. No, I do not have a real job. Yes, you should leave me a long, asinine comment about this whether you read this or not.

In case you were wondering about Mussina's user name, it was established in G1 Dugout continuity that Mussina would've had a normal, punny name had he stuck around in Baltimore. One of the complaints we've gotten since joining up here is that our stuff is too esoteric and tangential for the mass audience and that our specific kind of esotericism is nerdy as balls and offputting to even the remaining niche audience. The Yankee Refocus Dugout was in the spirit of our Progressive Boink Dugouts, straight-forward jokes and a ton of hyperbole about how the Yankees are gay and rich. It's what works.

So, in the spirit of continuing that upward momentum, here is a Dugout about Eri Yoshida, the first woman drafted into the Japanese professional baseball league, done in the nerdiest way I could imagine. If you spent most of the mid-90s looking for a Suncoast video to buy original language track versions of anime TV shows on VHS, you will probably love this. If you are not one of those 18 people, you will hate it. Sorry, this is the only way I know how to cover the story.

Tonight's Dugout is after the jump.

Update: New content added 11/19
Update 2: Well, okay, just a little bit

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Dugout Presents Yankee Refocus Giant-Sized Annual #1

by BGreat, now we're getting to that point in the offseason where every news update is about how the Yankees are "interested in" the big free agents and how some guy from some network interviewed them and they totally said they'd love to play for the Yankees, and on and on and blah blah blah. We've been doing this comic long enough to know the two great truths about the Yankees, and they are presented to you in chatroom form below.

Have the Yankees considered getting new uniforms? It works for everybody else. Maybe they can get a mascot. "Hey, things are turning around, the O's are trying to sign Teixeira!" Argh, not they aren't. "We've got great prospects in the minor leagues!" Yes, and they will remain great prospects in the minor leagues until they die or are traded away. "We got new uniforms!" Okay, yeah, we did get new uniforms!

This morning's Dugout is after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
