Nothing brings out the crazy in NHL spending like July 1st, the open of free agency. General managers seemingly cannot wait to spend their budgets, not only for this coming year, but for several years down the road.
Of course this only sets the stage for team owners to cry poor again, because of course they are not responsible for controlling their own spending. That's down the road, however; for now we can enjoy the UFA excitement and marvel at teams' ability to spend lavishly.
