Mike Comrie and Hilary Duff Engaged?

This has certainly been THE summer for NHL celebrity romances. Not long after we got word that MILF Hunter Jarret Stoll is going to get hitched to Rachel Hunter, and Dan Hinote getting engaged to a Playboy "playmate", we get word that Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie are getting ready to take their relationship to the next level.

From Hollyscoop.com, it seems the paparazzi scoped out the happy couple and caught Duff sporting with what looks like an engagement ring.
Hilary Duff has sparked engagement rumors after she was photographed leaving Hollywood hotspot Il Sole sporting a ring on her wedding finger Friday night.

Duff, who has been dating her hockey player beau Mike Comrie for a little over a year, wasn't trying hard to hide the ring. As soon as she saw the paps snap her photo, she casually flashed the ring while pretending to fix her hair.

Of course, Hilary Duff is a pro at the celeb hounding game and knows that she can keep her name in the media hungry by throwing them a bone or two, but leaving them guessing.

While it might look like Comrie would benefit from the fame and fortune of Hilary Duff's family-friendly entertainment empire, keep in mind that Comrie is heir to a large furniture chain. I'd say Duff did well for herself.

Hasek No "Dominator" in the Business World

While the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup this past June, it certainly hasn't been the best few months for re-retired goalie Dominik Hasek. Not only was the old crank demoted to being Chris Osgood's towel boy for the Cup Finals, but now his "Dominator" clothing line, which he started up in 1998, is losing money in a big way.
In an interview with The Prague Post, the former goalkeeper noted "The company was losing about 30,000 Kč [$1,955] per day, and I've already put in some 90 million Kč [over $5.8 million] over its 10-year presence on the market."

Mr Hasek's operation was far larger than those of his fellow Czech [Sporting Stars], operating both in Europe and the United States. Now, he has decided to close down the European wing, while keeping the US business afloat.
To understand why Hasek's business failed so badly in his homeland, one must remember that the purchasing power of the Czech Crown [Koruny] is far below the US dollar. The average Czech sports fan cannot easily afford to plunk down the equivalent of US$40 for a fancy "Dominator" t-shirt, or as much as $60 for a golf shirt. My Czech friends confirm that even the most basic "Dominator" shirts are twice as expensive as ye olde regular clothing.

This all makes me wonder if Hasek's comeback was purely financially motivated. Obviously, he needed to do something to boost sales, and what is better PR than playing with the Red Wings? If Hasek was losing money, then earning some sweet NHL bucks would be the best way to soften the pain, wouldn't it?

Did Kate Hudson Trade In Lance Armstrong for Eric Lindros?

Even though ex-New York Rangers star Eric Lindros has been retired from the NHL for some time, that doesn't mean the boy don't got some game left in his brittle bones!

According to sports gossip site "Sports By Brooks", Hollywood cutie Kate Hudson has recently been seen with The "Big E", not too long after she dumped cyclist Lance Armstrong and his stupid bracelet by the side of the road.
"Kate and Eric have been holed up at her parent's house (in) Muskoka, Canada. She went there immediately after she and Lance ended things. Eric's been a great support for her."

It would seem natural for Hudson to gravitate towards a hockey player, given how her parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, are known as big fans of the sport.

Still, I don't see how this could be considered "trading up", as the gossip site states. Is a retired has-been hockey player really that much better than a flaky actor (Owen Wilson) or Sheryl Crow's well-travelled rubbish (Armstrong)? Couldn't Hudson have found love with a current player on the LA Kings?

Another gossip site, Bitten and Bound, has a quote from one of Eric's friends who tries to poo-poo the love story, claiming that the Lindros clan and Hudson/Russell clan have been friends for 15-20 years. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Lindros really did score one last big goal.

Sergei Fedorov Sued for $2M

If Sergei Fedorov was feeling good after signing his new $4M deal with the Washington Capitals, those feelings have disappeared faster than Botox in Hollywood.

It seems that Sergei has been a bad boy with his finances, and is now being sued for failing to pay back some hefty loans he took out.

From the Washington Post:
Sergei Fedorov is being sued by a Michigan bank that says the Washington Capitals center has failed to pay more than $2 million in loans taken out four years ago.

According to a lawsuit filed Monday in Macomb County (Mich.) Circuit Court, Fedorov owes Citizens State Bank more than $2.1 million on two separate loans -- one for $1.75 million and another for $500,000. The first loan was made in December 2004, the second in April 2005

What the hell did Fedorov need with all that money in the first place?

Since 1989, Sergei Fedorov has been paid $61,519,036 in salary for his services. Did he blow all of this money on crack, diamond rings for Anna Kournikova, or did his music empire bring him to the brink of bankruptcy?

Lecavalier Set to Sign Lifetime Extention

Vincent LecavalierOnce upon a time, decade-long contracts were solely the realm of the weird and wacky New York Islanders. What owner, in their right mind, would commit themselves to a player for that length of time? Knowing the risks involved and the likelihood of the player's decline, such deals put a vast majority of the risk on the team, while giving the player a free ride and little incentive to perform.

Well, the new Tampa Bay Lightning ownership, who seem intent on winning the battle for most media coverage this off-season, are set to join "The 10 Club" with their new deal for Prince Vince Lecavalier.
The 28-year-old franchise centre signed an 11-year, $85-million contract extension with the Lightning that will kick in for the 2009-2010 season and run through the 2019-2020 campaign.

Lecavalier will earn $10-million per season in salary and bonuses for the first six seasons of the deal, before dropping to $8.5-million in 2016-2017, $4-million in 2017-2018, $1.5-million in 2018-2019 and $1-million and 2019-2020

The Bolts were originally said to be looking at a 9-year deal for about the same overall amount, but appear to have added two years to ensure that Lecavalier will serve out his dying days with the club.

So, is this smart or stupid? Will the Lightning rue having Lecavalier tied up when his game enters a deep decline, or be happy that he'll be locked down as salaries start to escalate?
