All he needed to work in was Michael Jackson, Iran and Follow Friday, and it would be the equivalent of hitting for the cycle in current events.

Here is the deal. The Daily Mail reported that Parrott, along with three other doubles players, were believed to have swine flu (it's baaaack). Problem is, Parrott has a Twitter page, and has treated the news like someone who has been falsely accused of having an STD.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Did Barack play 18 with Tiger? Did a certain player do something controversial off the course? Or was just playing golf enough to get the pot stirring? Join us for a weekly feature we call Making the Cut.

5. Tony Romo -- On Wednesday, Romo got the unique pleasure of teeing it up with Mr. Woods during the pro-am of the AT&T National. Not only is the Cowboys quarterback getting flak from college coaches and sports bloggers alike, but he is having to try and keep his game together with the best in the world. Sure, Tiger played a little with Peyton Manning earlier this year, but Romo's game is at a different level. U.S. Open ... 15-footer for par and the victory ... putt is stroked ... it's heading to the hole ... one arm outstretched, one foot off the ground ... and ... one final championship for one of the nicest guys to ever play the game.

Payne Stewart's legacy at Pinehurst No. 2, the site of his second U.S. Open that came four months before he died in a plane crash, is one that will always be around. The top-ranked American has reached the finals at Wimbledon twice, but despite a brief moment in the first set of the finals in 2004, Andy has always seemed a touch short of championship caliber.

Maybe not this year. Roddick took down No. 20 Thomas Berdych 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match that was hardly competitive after the first set tiebreaker. Andy rode his 24 aces to easy service games, never even facing a break point, but the comfort he has shown with his ground strokes is what has really stood out in 2009.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Perry has six top-10s, but only one win, dating back to the FBR Open in early February. As you might remember, the 48-year-old Perry was also nearly fitted with a green jacket at Augusta before making consecutive bogeys on 17 and 18 before losing in a playoff to Angel Cabrera.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The first George Bush was in office. "Aladdin" was the top-grossing movie in this whole new world, pulling in nearly $218 million dollars, and a scrawny, amateur golfer named Tiger Woods teed it up in his first ever PGA Tour event. Back then, the event was the Nissan Los Angeles Open, and Woods opened with at 1-over 72, eventually missing the cut at 5-over after following that up with a 75.

On Thursday, at the Wegmans LPGA, Cheyenne Woods, niece to Tiger, made her debut on the LPGA, shooting a 3-over 75 to tie for 119th.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

It has only been done three times in the history of golf, with the last time coming in 1999. It's the sub-60 round.

On Thursday, at the Travelers Championship, 48-year-old Kenny Perry had the rare opportunity to match that feat, and shoot a sub-60 round for only the fourth time on the PGA Tour, and the first time on a par-70 golf course. Standing over a 24-foot eagle putt on the par-4 15th hole, Perry was 8-under and looking to move to 10-under, just a shot off the mark with three holes to play.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

A year ago, Roddick was waving goodbye to the All England Club in the second round after Janko Tipsarevic took him down in four sets.

Thursday in London, Roddick was the one on the winning end, beating Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 for his 100th career win in a grand slam event. Roddick, who has continued to focus on fitness and endurance over strength, threw a lot of backhand slices at Kunitsyn, who only seemed to find his groove for a moment in the fourth set when he broke Andy, but Roddick continued to ride his big serve to 18 aces.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hands on the hip is an appropriate one. Yelling from the tee box is another. Hell, if you're frustrated enough, hitting into the group can sometimes put a fire in the slow group's behind. But, pull a gun on 'em? That seems to be a bit much.

Don't tell that to 73-year-old Edwin Dailey, who pulled out a loaded pistol at the slow golfers ahead of him, claiming he was, and I saw this in my creepiest voice possible, "obligated to destroy" Matt Nader, a former Austin (Tx) Westlake High School football player.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

It's an amazing golf course that can be played from all sorts of different tees and made to play easy or hard (as we saw, comparably, from 2002 to '09). If the wind blows it's a brute, but if it stays fairly calm and the rough isn't played knee deep, it could yield just about any score.

Mickelson made his case after he tied for second for a record fifth time at the U.S. Open, telling reporters it is the perfect spot for a Ryder Cup in the future.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Not at all. Phil Mickelson was supposed to claim the US Open title for his wife Amy. David Duval was supposed to give the 1980 USA hockey team a run for its money on underdog stories. And heck, we haven't even gotten to Tiger Woods and his first-round collapse that ended up costing him the tournament.

Nope. It wasn't supposed to go the way it did, but the US Open never does. Lucas Glover, the 29-year-old that married his soul mate and reads a book a week, came out of nowhere to claim the 2009 US Open title on great drive and gutsy putting. Glover had never finished in the top-10 in any major and had missed the cut in all of his previous US Open appearances, but this was Bethpage Black and Glover can do one thing better than anyone ... drive the golf ball.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

You know you're thinking it. I'm thinking it. Others in the field are thinking it. The only problem with that theory is the one guy that needs to think that doesn't seem to have that thought in his head at all.

The 28-year-old Barnes, who lives in Scottsdale and has never won a professional tournament and has made exactly two cuts ever in majors, played the third round of the U.S. Open like he was out at Arizona National, hacking it around with fellow Wildcat Chris Nallen. Sure, he made some bad swings tossed in the round, but it's Bethpage Black and you're not supposed to find all those tight fairways. Barnes, currently 8-under with a one shot lead over Lucas Glover, shot an even par round of 70 in the third round, something that, if matched in the final round, will all but seal up his first-ever win.

Never ever ever ever. This is Bethpage Black, where a sign hangs on the first hole telling you that if you aren't good, stay away.
