PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (May 10) - CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty apologized Sunday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for a morbid joke that went bad in a Dallas magazine.
Feherty, one of the most popular golf analysts for his sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, was among five Dallas residents who wrote for "D Magazine" on former President George W. Bush moving to Dallas.

What Did They Say?

"...There's a good chance Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice..."
CBS golf analyst David Feherty could get in trouble over his recent controversial remarks in a magazine article.

    "Oh, [expletive]. I lost you."
Coaching legend Bob Knight made the blunder during an appearance on 'Mike and Mike in the Morning'. ESPN called it an "unfortunate slip."

"I'd Take One Bullet, and Put It Right in Him ... "
Sounding harsher than he probably meant to, Cris Carter states that Dallas should part ways with Terrell Owens, then compares the act to shooting the brash wide receiver.

"With All These Chinese People Around..."
Richard Boxall was one of two Sky Sports commentators that made racial remarks about golfer Anthony Kim during the HSBC Champions tournament.

"Ya know, Hitler was a great leader too."
ESPN College Gameday personality Lou Holtz somehow compared the leadership skills of Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez to Adolf Hitler during a telecast last season.

    "You Always Fag Out"
College hoops announcer Billy Packer has upset many with abrasive remarks over the years. For example, he went on the Charlie Rose Show in March 2007 and complained to the host, "you always fag out."

    Bernstein's Palestinian Connection
ESPN reporter Bonnie Bernstein issued a public apology after appearing on a radio broadcast and saying "People in Palestine are taught to think that dying in the name of God is a good thing ... They grow up wanting to be suicide bombers."

"... Looks Like the Guy Who Cleans Tiger's Swimming Pool"
NBC Sports golf analyst drew the ire of U.S. Open watchers in June when he said contender Rocco Mediate "looks like the guy who cleans Tiger's swimming pool." Miller apologized for his description, saying it had "absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity."

"We've Gotta Do This [Expletive] Thing Over"

"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this though," Feherty wrote toward the end of his column. "Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."
Feherty, a former Ryder Cup player who grew up in Northern Ireland, has gone to Iraq over Thanksgiving the past two years to visit with U.S. troops, and he created a foundation to help wounded soldiers.
"This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president," Feherty said in a statement. "In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad."
Feherty has lived in Dallas the past dozen years. Along with working for CBS Sports, he writes a monthly column for Golf magazine and has written four books, the last one titled, "An Idiot for All Season."
CBS Sports distanced itself from Feherty's writing, saying it was "an unacceptable attempt at humor and is not in any way condoned, endorsed or approved" by the network. The PGA Tour also criticized him for an attempt at humor that "went over the line."
CBS is not broadcasting The Players Championship this week. The network resumes its PGA Tour coverage next week in San Antonio with the Valero Texas Open.

Texas would be owned by Mexico if it weren't for the men from Tennesee and Alabama.

dskaalrud5, you clearly fancy yourself a master of repartee. Indulging in the lame rhetoric you and your insanely liberal friends now find en vogue is not clever, it's pathetic. Had any of these "jokes" been said about the last booger-eating moron to be president there can be little doubt you'd defend them as "free speech". As for Texas, you can safely assume that many of us don't care to be Americans as you define it. We could do a fine job of governing ourselves without the unsolicited advice of the northeastern elite (or is it California?). Do not presume to tell us otherwise, dumbass. Next time you care to note Texas' contribution to your liberal paradise, remember the sheer number of Texans serving in the military. We don't mind, apparently, picking up the slack that your type hasn't the balls to embrace.

He's a golf writer from Texas; that's two strikes against him right off the bat. Think Pelosi's bad? Let's talk about Cheney...at least Pelosi hasn't shot anybody (yet) or acted like Martin Bormann. Money and power grabbing? Yup, sounds like Cheney all right-the guy who had his string in Bush's back for 8 years. Pelosi's a babe in the woods compared to the master manipulator. Rove is right up there with him too. This is really too bad because Feherty is pretty funny in a game that is SO stuffy and filled with boring adolescents now. His devotion to the troops is commendable as well and he deserves a lot of praise for that, especially seeing as how many Texans seem to think they're not part of our country anymore. Final thought: hard for Pelosi to mess up the country when Bush is the only one who could ink the deals. Republicans tend to gloss over this little fact and I don't really recall any veto overrides.......

David, I'm sorry to say this but I think your apology was not warranted in the least. If Congress was like golf, anyone shooting 80 for very long wouldn't be on the tour very long, and anyone in a job in the US that had an approval rating of 18% wouldn't be in their job for long either. I served this country in Viet Nam, I was trained to shot straight, I was also defending the Constitution if I remember correctly. In that Constitution there is a clause that refers to my freedom of speech, Nancy Pelosi's freedom of speech, and last but not least your freedom of speech. If Pelosi has a problem with what you said, let her open up her mouth and say so, then you can consider issueing an apology. Until then, everyone on your case should get a life, and go lay by their dish.......

No way would I have issued an appology.........unless my job was at threat ( like his was I am sure). Let me be clear if Pelosi took a bullet from anyone it would be a good day. She is scum, a whore, money grabbing, power grabbing &*^$%. I am not advocating violence just stating it would be a good day if Pelosi was not around messing up the country.
