Woods voted top athlete of the decade


Even after a shocking sex scandal that tarnished Tiger Woods, it was tough to ignore what he achieved on the golf course. He won 64 times around the world, including 12 majors, and hoisted a trophy on every continent golf is played. He lost only one time with the lead going into the final round. His 56 PGA Tour victories in one incomparable decade were more than anyone except four of golf's greatest players won in their careers.

Doctor involved in doping case charged in Canada


WASHINGTON (AP) — A doctor who has treated golfer Tiger Woods and many other pro athletes was charged by Canadian authorities on Wednesday with selling an unapproved drug known as Actovegin. Dr. Anthony Galea, 51, also was charged with conspiracy to import an unapproved drug, conspiracy to export a drug and smuggling goods into Canada by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Galea was arrested Oct. 15 in Toronto.

DETROIT (AP) — Cincinnati has lured another football coach from Central Michigan. A person familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday that Chippewas football coach Butch Jones has agreed to a 5-year deal with the Bearcats to replace Brian Kelly. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the contract has not been signed.

Halladay, Lee deal could be completed Wednesday


NEW YORK (AP) — The blockbuster trade sending Roy Halladay to Philadelphia and Cliff Lee to Seattle could be completed Wednesday, and it's become a four-team swap that involves Toronto shipping a prospect to Oakland. The Blue Jays would send Halladay and $6 million to the Phillies for three minor leaguers: catcher Travis d'Arnaud, right-hander Kyle Drabek and outfielder Michael Taylor.

Hunt is on for post-crash Tiger Woods photos


NEW YORK (AP) — The hunt for Tiger Woods is on, or at least the first photographs of the golf superstar since his late-night car crash and damaging news of his marital problems. The winner of 14 majors has virtually disappeared since driving his SUV into a tree during a bizarre accident outside his Orlando-area home last month. His wife, Elin Nordegren, has also laid low, though photos of her surfaced this week, her hand showing no sign of a wedding ring.

Wickmayer, Malisse cleared to play; ITF lifts ban


LONDON (AP) — U.S. Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer earned a major off-court victory Wednesday when officials lifted her one-year ban for violating anti-doping rules. The 20-year-old Belgian was banned in November for breaking World Anti-Doping Agency regulations by failing to report her whereabouts for drug testing three times.

Spain No. 1, US 14th in final soccer rankings


ZURICH (AP) — Spain is ranked No. 1 in the year-end FIFA standings for the second straight year, while the United States is ranked 14th. In rankings published Wednesday, the European champion maintained the lead it took last month from South American champion Brazil.

Renault says it will stay in Formula 1


PARIS (AP) — Renault is staying in Formula One racing after agreeing Wednesday to sell a "large stake" in the team to a private investment firm to keep the cars on the grid in 2010. The French carmaker had been weighing whether to pull out of F1 following a crash scandal that led to the departure of former team principal Flavio Briatore.

Holmgren visits Browns for second straight day


CLEVELAND (AP) — Mike Holmgren remained unemployed. Eric Mangini stayed on the job, and the Cleveland Browns were still a mess. That was about the extent of things following a drawn-out Tuesday with scarce information as the Browns, searching for a leader to head their football operations, continued talks with Holmgren, the former Seattle and Green Bay coach who wants back into the NFL.

Greenberg-Ryan group finalist to buy Texas Rangers


ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks will enter into an exclusive negotiation for the sale of the team to a group headed by Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg that includes team president Nolan Ryan. Hicks Sports Group said in a release Tuesday night that Greenberg's group "primarily consists of Dallas-Fort Worth investors," including the family of Hicks, who would maintain a stake in the team under the proposal. Ryan would remain president of the team.
