Saints stay unbeaten with 38-17 win over Patriots

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Drew Brees and the unbeaten Saints left Tom Brady in the dust, zipping up and down the field in a dominant romp over the New England Patriots. Brees threw for a season-high 371 yards and five touchdowns, carving up coach Bill Belichick's defense like few quarterbacks ever have in New Orleans' 38-17 victory Monday night.

Woods withdraws from tourney, citing injuries

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Tiger Woods still isn't talking. Now he's not playing, either. Woods withdrew Monday from his own golf tournament, citing injuries from a car crash near his Florida home. His decision comes as questions continue to mount regarding what exactly happened in the wee hours of the morning last Friday — questions that most certainly would have been asked of him had he played. The world's No. 1 golfer posted a statement on his Web site saying that unspecified injuries prevented him from playing in the Chevron World Challenge. He had been scheduled to hold a press conference Tuesday for the tournament, which he hosts annually for a small, invited, field.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Bobby Bowden says he has not made a decision about his coaching future at Florida State and plans to meet with university officials again Tuesday. Bowden told The Associated Press at his home Monday evening that he is still sifting through "options" presented to him when he met with Florida State President T.K. Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman for an hour earlier in the day.

Notre Dame fires Weis after another dismal season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Charlie Weis arrived at Notre Dame flashing Super Bowls rings and talking about outscheming opponents. He leaves one of college football's most prestigious programs without even matching the records of the two men who were fired before him. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced the decision to let Weis go on Monday, and said during a campus news conference that the school has not contacted any potential replacements.

Williams fined record $82,500 for US Open tirade

Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 for her tirade at a U.S. Open line judge and could be suspended from that tournament if she has another "major offense" at any Grand Slam in the next two years. Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock's ruling was released Monday, and he said Williams faces a "probationary period" at tennis' four major championships in 2010 and 2011. If she has another "major offense" at a Grand Slam tournament in that time, the fine would increase to $175,000 and she would be barred from the following U.S. Open.

New Jersey Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe is set to become the team's coach for the rest of the season. He doesn't have to worry about being on the bench for a potential record-setting loss, though.

Falcons' Ryan to miss at least 1 game with injury

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan will miss this week's game against Philadelphia with a turf toe injury. Coach Mike Smith says Chris Redman, who took over for Ryan in Sunday's 20-17 win over Tampa Bay, will start against the Eagles.

Manning says injury not affecting play

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Despite the New York Giants' recent slump and his own mediocre performances, quarterback Eli Manning says a stress reaction in his right foot is not affecting his play. Manning developed the injury while dealing with another problem on the bottom of his foot during a win Oct. 4 at Kansas City. The Giants were 4-0 after that victory, but are now 6-5 as Manning has struggled in recent weeks, even though his inflamed arch has healed.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Disgraced track star Marion Jones is training for a comeback — in the WNBA. San Antonio Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes confirmed Monday night that Jones has been training with his assistants to possibly play in the WNBA, more than a year after the 34-year-old was released from federal prison for lying about her doping use.

Tide's Ingram 'definitely' will play vs. Gators

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Mark Ingram said his bruised hip is fine and he will "most definitely" be ready for the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 1 Florida. No. 2 Alabama's tailback was injured in the fourth quarter against Auburn on Friday and played a limited role on the Crimson Tide's final winning drive in a 26-21 win. Coach Nick Saban said the Heisman Trophy contender would practice Monday but might be held out of contact drills.
