PITTSBURGH -No matter how you measure it, the Cleveland Browns can't beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes before the Steelers' offense began stopping itself with turnovers, and Pittsburgh benefited from a curious first-down measurement to beat the rival Browns for the 12th consecutive time, winning 27-14 on Sunday.
Roethlisberger, second in the league in passing and on pace for what would easily be the best statistical season of his career, was 23 of 35 for 417 yards in his second career 400-yard game. He threw for 433 during a 31-20 loss to Denver in 2006. Hines Ward made eight catches for 159 yards and a touchdown and Santonio Holmes had five for 104.
The game turned out a lot closer than it was expected to be for much of the second half — the Steelers, two-touchdown favorites, once led only 17-14 — mostly because each team turned it over four times in a sloppily played game in which Pittsburgh outgained Cleveland 543-197.
There were four turnovers in a span of 1:25 to end the third quarter, two by each team, about the only way the Browns slowed a Steelers offense that had gone 50 games without generating 500 yards since doing it against Cleveland in 2006.
What the Browns (1-5) couldn't figure out is how the Steelers (4-2) ended up scoring in the final minutes of the first half, on Jeff Reed's 32-yard field goal to make it 17-7, after Roethlisberger appeared to come up several inches short on a fourth-and-1 sneak from the Browns 14.
TV replays showed the ball short of the stick on a play in which Roethlisberger took considerable time at the line of scrimmage, a tactic in which the offense tries to draw the defense offside, only to slam into the middle of the Browns' defense.
The Browns couldn't challenge the call since it was within the final two minutes of the half. Roethlisberger appeared to throw a 13-yard TD pass to Hines Ward two plays later, but the call was overturned upon review because the ball came out of Ward's hands as he rolled out of bounds.
Because of the first-down call, the Browns trailed 17-14 instead of being tied at 14 after driving for only their fourth touchdown on offense in 12 games — they've lost 11 of those — on Derek Anderson's 1-yard pass to Lawrence Vickers that finished off a 66-yard drive to start the second half.
Anderson, who replaced an ineffective Brady Quinn after 2 1/2 games, finished 9 of 24 for 122 yards.
The Steelers, winning their third in a row, came back after Vickers' score to make it 24-14 when Roethlisberger hit Ward for 45 yards and Mike Wallace for 21 ahead of Rashard Mendenhall's 2-yard touchdown run.
The Browns' only other scoring came on Joshua Cribbs' 98-yard kickoff return that followed Roethlisberger's touchdown passes of 8 yards to Heath Miller and 52 to Ward. Cribbs ran untouched along the Steelers' sideline for his club-record eighth kick return score, six on kickoff returns, and his third against the Steelers.
After the flurry of turnovers ended the third quarter, Reed kicked a 39-yard field goal, and the Browns gave the ball back yet again — their fourth turnover and 32nd in their last 12 games — when Anderson was intercepted by Ryan Clark near the goal line with 4:21 to play.
Cribbs also was intercepted by Troy Polamalu, who returned after a four-game injury layoff, out of a wildcat formation during yet another dreadful first half by the Browns offense, which was outgained 289-71 in the half and 231-14 in yards passing.
The Steelers have won 18 of 19 against the Browns, counting a playoff game, and are 9-1 against them in Heinz Field.

If Mangini wants to shut me up and have me stop posting just how pathetic this team is under Randy Lerner, and under his coaching staff, go into Pittsburgh at 1 pm, and pull off a David slays goliath slingshot act. But in my opinion, based on viewing every game since the return of the Browns in 1999, I can see through the clouds of a bad team, and today proof will be that the results will be the same.... Pittsburgh 34- Browns 9 .... you can not take a bunch of hasbeen Jets players into Pittsburgh and expect a competive game. If Mangini thinks a 6-3 win over a hapless Bills team, owned by another dweeb, the ancient Ralph Wilson, is something to build on, I got a news flash what we the fans are thinking.... you were lucky, damn lucky to get the victory last week. It by far was the poorest game ever played by two teams pretending they belong in the NFL...... Pete Carroll could've defeated the teams even if they combined both rosters with his college team. And if the Steelers blow the Clowns doors off as almost every person walking the earth thinks they will, the mutiny of Eric Mangini (lil Bill hitler), Brian Daboll (uncle fester from the Adams family), Rob Ryan (the dumbest twin), and Derek Anderson (reincarnation of interception king Vinny Testerverde) will start a new..... By 4 p.m. swelling support for Mangini to be fired will grow after another drubbing by the arch rival Pittsburgh Steelers...... you will never catch the Steelers looking past the Clowns, cause their fans feed off Cleveland fans' misery. My prediction will be at least 3 picks and a fumble by the great Derek (the divider) Anderson..... then will come a press conference by the snake.... that says we can't turn over the ball bs and expect to win.....we are gonna be embarrassed again, and you no what is really sad, Browns fans are starting to learn that we are just another crappy team in a string of turds that Lerner keeps pushing out his ass and dumping it on Clevelanders, and Mangini is just another power trip dude like Phil Savage and Butch Davis, and our players are just more free agents that came to Cleveland to collect an early retirement bonus before being pushed out of the NFL..... it's a vicious cycle of abuse that started under Al Lerner and will continue through Randy Lerner as long as he owns the team in a city he hates spending any time in..... and hiring Bernie Kosar to quiet down the dawgs of discontent will not work this time Lerner......

It's Brownie week. As far as Polamalu, welcome back Kotter. As far as the Browns, when a team (no matter what sport or league) sucks for years it's a case of poor management at the owner level. They'll cut players, fire coaches, look for easy scapegoats, but in the end it's the owners themselves.

And now Randy Lerner hires Bernie Kosar cause the fans are after what product he puts on the field, and holding him accountable.... this is just another use Bernie attempt to recycle Lerners image. Old man Lerner did the same thing when he was campaigning to get the team, he cozzied up to Bernie Kosar and used him, then threw him aside like a rag doll as soon as he got the franchise.... it's all fluff and stuff.... cause fans are a buzz in the city putting on the pressure that the owner is pathetic and doesn't care, and we no he must sell to save football in Cleveland, Ohio....anyone taking bets how long before Mangini throws Bernie under the bus? I give it 3 months lmao...

No doubt Lerner is the worst NFL owner....rivalry implies both teams field competive players, which is untrue. It's more like a yearly drubbing. With a pathetic owner who serves up crap year after year, the clowns are the nations laughing stock, even Al Davis is a better owner. We have a puppet gm, a head snake for a coach, and two incompetent coordinators. We have three players that other teams might want.... Joe Thomas, Josh Cribbs and Phil Dawson...... the rest of the players are mostly here to collect checks and give as little effort as possible. They are like dudes that move into a city and destroy it cause they have no pride. Lerner has killed the fun in watching football. Mangini is a jackass. Daboll is just a fat friend of the coach that couldn't coach peewee football.... and Rob Ryan was run out Oakland cause his defense sucked there for 5 years....... in 4 years..... after Magoonie runs outta excuses for bad teams, he'll be run outta football and Cleveland will be told by Randy Lerner, theres nothing but crap in the cupboard.... it's like a endless cycle of Randy Lerner and Al Lerner abusing Cleveland fans...... the same program Larry Dolan is running with the Indians.... how fitting Mark Sharpio and Eric Mangini are in the same family........ the crap family of low expectations.......baseball and football have been killed in our city and both teams might as well leave......cause we can spend our money on other productive things then two owners of crap.

Examine the current coaching staff: three stoogies that never played football in the NFL, Mangini, Daboll and Ryan.... Did Lerner ask Romeo Crenell for his all you can eat buffet buffoons? All three of these men have no self discipline when it comes to their physical condition, yet they profess to be experts of disciplinarians? How comical is that? Maybe Randy Lerner could feature a halftime show of them dueling to eat 6 dollar hotdogs and buckets of wings, invite Romeo Crennell and have him bring the crispy creme donuts.... As Lerner bobs for rotten apples that fell from the Belicheat tree in New England, other franchises hired rookie coaches who turned franchises around in their first year: Miami, Atlanta, San Francisco, Denver, the New York jets, but Randy Lerner, Captain Dumbo interviews and hires the first guy he interviews, for the second time in a row.... god forbid his tea and crumpet time in Aston Villa get interrupted for a NFL franchise and city he refuses to live in. In Cleveland Lerner is about as popular as stepping into a stall where a dude just took an hour long dump, the stench and stink drives anyone away..... and stink and stench is what Lerner fills the stadium that cost Clevelanders a billion dollars. This guy is a real turd.... supposedly he flies in for games, but no one knows for sure, cause his mug is nowhere attached to the sewage tank of crap he has brought to Berea. He's a true chip off the block from his old man that sold our team and our superbowl to Baltimore. Fans should put yard signs in the front lawns of his face with the stick buried in dog crap.... let him know how we feel about his crappy ownership. And his little Hitler coach Manloser will not be able to attract any free agents worth a damn, expect for ex-jet players looking to extend a hasbeen career. Soon Rob Ryan will be leaving for New York to team up with his evil twin Rex, and Daboll, he'll continue to destroy rookie offensive draft picks in Cleveland in between his cake and pie eating binges..... so the best thing Clevelanders can do is watch the games of yesteryear on their ipods, computers and vcrs, and hope and pray that THE KING TURD (Randy Lerner) sells our team.... if we can pay for a billion dollars for a stadium, I sure we can raise a billion to own the team outright like Green Bay does...... finally, where are our past Browns players and why aren't they calling for Lerner to sell the team? Goe live in London dude and let us have our team back from the toilet bowl you dump your sewage in..... you have ruined our citys Sunday entrertainment long enough, our community is tired of being the butt of your assinine decisions..... we want you to sell turd....

Randy Lerner has ruined football in Cleveland for a generation of fans. He continues to serve a full helping of crap on Sundays, but fans still pack the house. This pathetic owner is receiving the 5th best gross revenues of any team, according to Forbes list, as the snobby Londonite, little silver spoon fed, rich kid, tortures fans with rotten apples that fell from the deadwood of the Belicheck coaching tree. Mangini (lil bill hitler)
Romeo Crennell (crispy creme), Butch Davis (wacko) and Chris Palmer(clueless) have all had there 3/4 year plans over the last 11 years. We are officially worse then the expansion team of 1999. Kids in Northeast Ohio are now buying Steeler jerseys and shoving that in the kids faces who stick with the home team of pathetic free agents that should be living in the projects. Braylon Edwards was laughing with his friends how he deliberately dropped passes to get out of town.We have a murder on our roster. We had a free agent cornerback that got paid 4 years for rehabbing his knees... We had former Patriot stars come here and collect early retirement bonuses. We have a current starting QB that hates Cleveland fans. We have a home grown kid that gets benched as QB after 10 quarters of his offensive coordinator Brian Dabolt (uncle fester from the Adams family) sabotaging the play calling to destroy his career. We have Rob Ryan (the dumb twin) that is loading up his brothers team with the few sprinkles of talent left and prime draft picks for half price returns, then of course, he'll leave for a train to NY at the end of the season after the bone picking is done for a real job... we are being told by the press that the teams cupboards are bare of talent as they ask stupid questions of the Browns management, and so Browns fans are resigned to having no more fun with football because owner Randy Lerner is the grinch of football. His late father brokered the deal that allowed Baltimore to steal our beloved team.... god pray he's roasting in hell for it and keeping seats warm for his son and traitor Art Model. Fans are circulating petitions in hopes to force a sale by the owner, but no dice. The Cleveland media is about as pathetic as the first round draft choices the Browns picked the last decade. All of them need fired for ************ and keeping the pressure on this owner. As Randy Lerner hides his face from the crap product he dishes up for millions of dawgs fans, the media scurries like scared little rodents in a trap. Football is now dead in Cleveland Ohio, and in four years, we will be told Mangoonie and the jets that came here left the cupboards bare once again..... most of us fans will die without ever seeing a championship in our lives.... that is the state of the Cleveland Browns under Rany the grinch Lerner.
