PHILADELPHIA -Bill Guerin and Alex Goligoski scored midway through the second period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins hand the Philadelphia Flyers their first loss of the season, 5-4 on Thursday night.
Evgeni Malkin, who also had an assist, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy also scored for the Penguins, who were coming off their first loss of the season, 3-0 to Phoenix on Wednesday.
Danny Briere and Jeff Carter both scored twice for the Flyers, who missed a chance to start the season 4-0 for the first time since 1995-96.
Carter's second goal came with the Flyers skating with the extra attacker with 41 seconds left.
This was the teams' first meeting since the Penguins overcame a 3-0 deficit to eliminate the Flyers with a 5-3 victory in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury had 30 saves to improve his record to 3-0. He preserved the lead midway through the second period when he stopped point-blank shots from Mike Richards and Mika Pyorala.
Ray Emery, who lost for the first time, made 20 saves.
Guerin scored on a breakaway after taking a cross-ice pass from Chris Kunitz to break a 2-2 tie at 8:08 of the second period.
Goligoski, who also had an assist, made it 4-2 at 8:08 when he was credited with a fluke goal. Philadelphia defenseman Braydon Coburn, pressured by Ruslan Fedotenko, failed to clear his dump-in and the puck bounced into the net off Emery's skate.
Carter scored from the slot with the Flyers skating with a two-man advantage at 16:59, but Kennedy redirected Matt Cooke's shot at 8:37 of the third period to make it 5-3.
Malkin put the Penguins ahead on a power play 48 seconds into the game when he threaded a long one-timer through traffic from inside the blue line.
Briere tied it at 11:53 when he poked in a pass from Coburn, but Pittsburgh regained the lead 28 seconds later on a breakaway by Staal, who went backhand to forehand and scored.
Briere scored again from the side of the net to tie the game at 2:37 of the second period when his shot nicked off Cooke.
NOTES: Pittsburgh played in its second of five games within an eight-day span, and the first of a four-game, seven-day trip. ... The Penguins are 16-7-0 in their last 22 games against the Flyers. ... The teams finished 2-2-2 last regular season with the Flyers holding the edge in goals, 21-20, and shots, 168-166. ... Goligoski's goal was his first in 17 games dating to Dec. 22, 2008, against Buffalo. ... Kunitz and Philadelphia D Chris Pronger received 10-minute misconducts with 1.2 seconds left in the third period.

Yo Bill your Mom's Pittsturd! The Pens were better. You deserve to advance. Real Flyers Fans know what's up We never had a player that gets his ass kissed by the league and the ref;s. Come on down to Philly and shoot your steel plated head off like you do online. Your probably a transvestite! Nobody roots for the Pens but Pens fans. The rest of the world hates the favoretism u guys recieve all year long just because Bing the Mary Crosby whines like a an 8th grade pansy. I'll show u Filthadephia first hand by shoving your fairy ass in one of our very clean trash cans head first and then shove one of Clarkies sticks up your butt. just like Crosby enjoys every night after he plays in the ice capades.

I hate to break it to ya, Penns fans...but your team isn't gonna go all the way this year, so this win is meaningless in the long run. If your team couldn't win it all with Marian Hossa last year, what makes you think your team is gonna do it without him? The flyers were able to control Crosby and Malkin for alot of the series, and there are other better defensive teams out there than the Flyers this year, so good luck, your team is certainly gonna need it hahaha.

ONLY ONE THING WORST THAN COWBOY FANS ,YA FLYER FANS. THIS ONE SOUNDS LIKE HE DID REACH THE 8TH GRADE IN SCHOOL. THE THING I DONT UNDERSTAND IS, IF THE PENS ARE AS BAD AS HE THINKS AND WE ARE UP 3 GAMES TO 1, WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE HEARTLESS FLYERS? FACE IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO PHILLY YOU KNOW THAT 40% THE GUYS ARE GAY AND THE OTHER 60% ARE 8TH GRADE FLYER FANS.

Um you mean Fleury lifts Pens to 3 1 win. If it weren't for that guy's unbelievable goal tending the Flyers would have won.

All over but the crying, and boy can Cryers fans do *********** never their fault when they lose. It had to be the refs or the replay official or the league-wide conspiracy that wants Crosby to advance as far as he can. How about the fact that the Penguins have had the better goaltending, and that the Flyers power play decided to start working on that off season golf game before the season was officially over.

Your toast now so SUCK IT!!!!

The Filthadelphia Flyers are going to lose this series. The Penguins had an off day and Filthadelphia was able to pull their miserable excuse of a team together enough to capitalize on it. It won't happen twice.
