NEW YORK -The NBA says it will review accusations by former referee Tim Donaghy that were posted online.
The league also says Thursday it has been reassured that an investigation found Donaghy to be the only official involved in criminal conduct. The referees say they are disappointed but not surprised by their former colleague's actions.
Donaghy admitted taking cash payoffs from gamblers for picks on games, including ones he officiated. He was sentenced to 15 months for conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commence.
Donaghy accuses fellow referees of misconduct in excerpts that appeared on the Web site deadspin.com. The publisher, however, says it won't go forward with the book.

In December of 1999 Arnie Wexler, a compulsive-gamblers counselor, went to the National Basketball Association office in Manhattan and met with league officials, players and union officials, concerned about players' gambling. He recalled being told, "We have a problem, and we're trying to find out how bad the problem is" Wexler, a resident of Bradley Beach and former executive director of the New Jersey Council on Compulsive Gambling, was told to keep his calender open from January through March, to allow him to address every team in the league.

When he didn't hear from the NBA in a few weeks he called and asked, "When do we start?"

You don't, he was told. "They said, "The higher ups didn't want the media to find out.' "

If you think basketball is the only game that has crooked officials, ********** a little closer. Like it was just said it is a multi million dollar gambling business.

Gambling is a multi-billion dollar business and it should come as a surprise to no one that the people who make the lion's share of that money aren't really gambling. A few innocent looking calls here and there can keep a game close or allow a lead to widen. It would be incredibly naive to think that fact hasn't been exploited for great profit over the years. It also explains why NBA officiating is so God awful.
