PROVO, Utah -A New Mexico soccer player has become an Internet celebrity for the wrong reasons.
Junior defender Elizabeth Lambert was suspended Friday for her infractions the day before during a 1-0 loss to BYU in a Mountain West Conference semifinal. Lambert is seen in video from the game throwing elbows, colliding with several players and then yanking the ponytail of a BYU player who went crashing to the ground.
"My actions were uncalled for," Lambert said in a statement released by New Mexico. "I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation."
Lambert's actions brought unprecedented — and very unwanted — attention to the Mountain West women's soccer tournament.
Video highlights have been airing nationally since Thursday night and not because it was a thrilling game decided on Carlee Payne's header in the 31st minute. The focus of the highlights is more on Lambert's physical play, especially her takedown of BYU's Kassidy Shumway by grabbing her ponytail and pulling her backward.
New Mexico moved quickly to announce Friday that Lambert has been suspended indefinitely. The Mountain West followed with a statement commending the Lobos for acting promptly.
"Liz is a quality student-athlete, but in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and good sportsmanship," New Mexico coach Kit Vela said.
Lambert was the only player to be penalized in the game, getting a yellow card in the 77th minute for colliding with a BYU player who was driving toward the Lobos' net. The highlights showed the game was physical in both directions, including an elbow to Lambert's ribs by a BYU player during a dead ball.
Lambert responded with an elbow to the back, one of many regrettable plays she made in the game.
"This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player I am," Lambert said in her apology. "I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them. I am especially sorry to BYU and the BYU women's soccer players that were personally affected by my actions."

A huge message needs to be sent. She should be thrown out of school, the coach fired and the charges should be pressed against her. If not, that says loads about the school. she is representing them every time she palys.

There is an idiot born every minute. Maybe you should join, I am sure Elizabeth will need some friends. Her behavior sure did not make her many pals.

Lambert is only sorry that she got caught on video. Her repeated actions during that game speak volumes as to her upbringing, her character, values and lack of sportsmanship. She deserves the public humiliation that she's earned for herself.

The coach needs to get the boot. Any coach that allows a player like that piece of trash to remain on the field after even the first violation is a disgrace.

The footage from that match was so awesome. I'm not on facebook, but if I was I would ask Elizabeth Lambert to be my friend. She makes soccer uber palatable.

All she really needs is a good spanking.

Honestly, I blame her coach. Anyone who has managed young people during competitive, stressful situations knows it is possible for a player to act out in an unthinking, emotional way. The referees may not have seen most of her infractions but I can not believe her coaching staff was ************ her melt-down. At this point, her coach needed to substitute her out or get word to her that her behavior on the pitch needs to change. The coaching staff witnessed her aggresive actions and condoned the behavior by allowing it to continue. Now, her school is throwing this young person under the bus. Way to be the mature adults, New Mexico.

What I don't understand is how she was allowed to continue to play dirty and take cheap shots and be a bully the entire game. I don't know much about soccer and what is allowed, but if that happened in any other sport, especially the ponytail throwdown, she would have been removed immediately. All she got was a yellow card for all of that in the actual game? Doesn't seem right to me.

Oh and sorry, that was a nice apology and all but saying that that is not indicative of your character is complete BS since you did it over and over and over again. If she had just shoved another girl in frustration once then I could understand that she let her emotions "get the best of her." However, she did it multiple times making me think that that is very much indicative of her character, and I am surprised this is the first time she has ever been called out on it.
