Martinez leaves game with stiff neck

ATLANTA -Pedro Martinez left his start after three innings because of neck stiffness in Philadelphia's game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.
Martinez was trailing 3-0 when he approached the mound to begin warming up for the fourth. The right-hander, who gave up seven hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout, never got the chance as manager Charlie Manuel brought in Chad Durbin.
Phillies officials waited until the bottom of the sixth inning to announce that the three-time Cy Young Award winner was diagnosed with stiffness in the right side of his neck.
Philadelphia had a 7-0 record in Martinez's seven starts this season. He was coming off a 130-pitch performance that included eight scoreless innings, six hits, no walks and seven strikeouts in a 1-0 victory last Sunday against the New York Mets, his former team.
In a 9-4 victory over Atlanta on Friday, rookie starter J.A. Happ pitched just three innings for the Phillies. The team said Happ left for "precautionary reasons" after he missed his two previous turns in the rotation because of a strained oblique.
Philadelphia signed Martinez to a $1 million, one-year contract on July 15, though the deal was worth an additional $500,000 if he met certain incentives.
Martinez was not offered a contract after going 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts last year for the Mets. After helping Boston win the 2004 World Series, he signed a $53 million contract, but won just 32 games during his stay with New York, missing the playoffs in '06 and undergoing major shoulder surgery that limited him to five starts in '07.

I remember when "Pain in the neck" Pedro said that they should dig up the Bambino(Babe Ruth), put him in the batter's box and that he would drill him in the behind(with a fastball I hope). Well it looks like the Phillies might win their division. If the Phillies beat the other NL teams to get to the world series, I hope Pedro pitches against the New York Yankees at new Yankee Stadium. The Yankees would hit so many rockets off of Pedro that in order to watch the drives leave the park so fast, his head would twist as fast as the demon possessed kid in the movie "the Exorcist." Pedro is a pain in the neck but he deserves that kind of pain instead. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!

Theo, you're brilliant for not Pedro. 53 million for 32 wins is a tad on the expensive side...lol

If it weren't for baseball. Pedro (His friends call him Miguel) would be in prison. The fact that he is gay should substantially disrupt the Philly clubhouse at shower time.

Like Pedro said himself he is not the young Pedro who can win 20 games anymore, The Phillies are going to pursue and probably land Roy Halladay If Pedro can be 70% of his old self with Halladay leading the Phillie's second half rotation believe me they have a great chance of repeating.

Ruban Amaro is an FN idiot! Lets bring in a pitcher who can only give you 6 innings when the bullpen is already exausted. Great move Ruban, and it only cost you 4 million bucks when bringing up a prospect from double or triple A would cost you almost nothing. If this move prevents the Phillies from getting Roy Halladay, this NITWIT should be fired immediately and replaced with Pat Gillick. PEDRO....WE DO NOT WANT YOU SCREWING UP OUR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM. GO HOME!

I am surprised that I saw his photos on the biggest dating site -----Sugar momma Match. c o m------bringing together older women and younger men. Even if he is aged, he want to date a woman who is older than his. do you believe it?

although he is aged, i believe he has the experience and drive to perform well with a high caliber team so needed to fill the voids left empty.
