NEW YORK -Iowa and Penn State ended their seasons eligible for an at-large BCS bid, and Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech are also in position to be eligible for invites to the four big-money bowl games even though they have no shot to win their conferences.
The top seven teams in the Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday were unchanged from last week, with Florida, Alabama and Texas still in control of the national championship race.
Barring any major upsets over the next two weeks, the winner of the Florida-Alabama Southeastern Conference title game will face Texas in the BCS title game on Jan. 7 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
With fourth-place TCU a victory away from securing an automatic BCS bid and the loser of Florida-Alabama essentially a lock to be selected, only two at-large berths would remain.
To be eligible for an at-large BCS bid, a team must finish 14th or better in the final standings, which are released Dec. 6.
Iowa is 11th after completing its regular season Saturday with a 10-2 record, while Big Ten counterpart Penn State is 13th after also finishing 10-2.
The Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions will likely by vying for an at-large bid with sixth-place Boise State, which is two victories away from a 13-0 regular season but would be unable to gain an automatic bid if it finishes behind TCU.
Oklahoma State (9-2) from the Big 12 is in 12th place with its regular-season finale at Oklahoma on Saturday. The Cowboys need a victory to keep their hopes for an at-large bid alive.
Virginia Tech (8-3) is 14th and has to be considered the longest shot to receive a bid, even if it finishes its regular season by beating Virginia on Saturday.
No automatic bids to conference champions will be clinched this week, but five conference titles and BCS bids will be decided by five games the following week.
Oregon and Oregon State meet in Eugene on Dec. 3, with the winner earning the Pac-10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. The loser is essentially eliminated from BCS contention.
Cincinnati is at Pittsburgh on Dec. 5 in what has turned into a Big East conference championship game. Both teams play this week (Pitt visits West Virginia on Friday, the same day Cincinnati hosts Illinois in a nonconference game). If the Bearcats and Panthers both finish 11-1, the loser of their game would definitely be in the running for an at-large bid.
Florida and Alabama both face big rivalry games this week, with the Gators taking on Florida State and the Crimson Tide playing at Auburn. Upsets in those games could keep the SEC champion out of the BCS title game.
Texas plays at Texas A&M on Thursday before facing Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. A loss in either could keep the Longhorns from playing for a national championship, but like Alabama and Florida, the Longhorns don't need to win the conference title to end up in a BCS game.
The Cornhuskers' only route to the BCS is to win the Big 12.
Georgia Tech (11-1), seventh in the BCS standings, play Georgia on Saturday and can earn an automatic bid by beating Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game on Dec. 5. The Yellow Jackets would likely remain eligible for an at-large bid even with a loss in the conference title game.
Like Nebraska, Clemson needs to win the conference to get into the BCS.

If it comes down to the bowls deciding between Penn State or Iowa. Penn State will get it because it is more attractive with the big TV market that follows Penn State throughout the Northeast section of the country. Not saying it's fair but the bowl comittees are strictly looking for who will bring in the most $$$

Last time Big 10 team beat any top 20 team not in the Big Ten was when Henne and Michigan beat the hell out of Tebow in Florida at a bowl game thank you very much!

I think the SEC is the best Conference in the NCAA but they got the worst refs any where. The GA ASU game was the worst called game I ever saw. And if any of you saw the Cincinnati WVU game knows that Cincinnati lost that game had not the refs gave them a TD they didn't get. But the big 10? Come on they play good ball up there but there best team could not play with LSU. FL or AL would go undefeated in any Conference in America and I am a Big East fan.

Pokemon man67777 damn you are good, and most of what you say I agree with. 4 years ago WVU put a whopping on GA, the next year they beat up on GA Tech then OK and last year they beat UNC. That is 2 ACC teams, 1 SEC, 1 Big 12. That leaves only the Pac 10 that WVU hasn't beat in a bowl game. When will the Big East get some respect?

Now, as for this year, be honest, TCU and Boise might both be able to reach a BCS game. You all forget the Big East is a BCS conference, not a small one, so therefore, Cinncinatti is not a small school. The BCS bowls have a very good chance to look like this because the orange bowl is usually acc vs big east champ, rose is pac 10 vs big ten champ, fiesta is big 12 and at large team and sugar is sec and at large team. Based on that, here is how i see it unfolding as of right now.
Orange Bowl - Georgia Tech vs. Cinncinatti
Rose Bowl - Oregon vs. Ohio State
Sugar Bowl - (Florida/Alabama) vs. TCU
Fiesta Bowl - Oklahoma State vs. Boise State
BCS Title - (Florida/Alabama) vs. Texas
Now, the reason that Oklahoma State could be in the Fiesta Bowl is this, I'll break it down spot by spot. The teams between them and Georgia Tech in the standings are LSU, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, and Oregon.
Reason 1. Ok. St. over LSU, no conference can have 3 teams in BCS Bowls, since Florida and Bama will be in BCS bowls, LSU can't go to one.
Reason 2. If Cinncinatti beats Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh will undoubtedly fall behind OK. St.
And Reason 3. Since Oregon and Ohio St. will both already be in Rose Bowl, niether of them can go the Fiesta Bowl. And that is how you would justify my putting Ok. St. in, and allowing both TCU and Boise St. into BCS Bowls.

First of all SEC haters, lets look at last three years. Florida not even worthy to be on same field as Ohio State? Final score Florida 41, Ohio State 14, hmmmm, who was unworthy of who? Then LSU blasts Ohio State I believe it was 38 to 14 for a second straight SEC national champ. Then Florida had no chacne to stop the best offense in FBS history Oklahoma. I'd say only giving up 14 points and spanking them for a THIRD STRAIGHT SEC NATIONAL CHAMP pretty much solidifies that the SEC is the best. Everyone wants to go oh but Utah beat Bama. And? Bama had just been 1 game ONE GAME from playing for a national title, they didn't care about playing some team called utah for a sugar bowl. And by the way, in the year before that when at the sugar bowl Georgia stomped a 50 something to 7 mudhole into Hawaii, I didn't see you all come to the defense of the small school who should get a shot at the big boys then. So bottom line, quit crying about the BCS only when it suits your needs.
