Cody's 2 blocked kicks lift Tide past Vols, 12-10

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -Alabama's Mount Cody proved too big for Tennessee to kick over.
Terrence Cody, the Crimson Tide's 350-pound nose guard, blocked a 44-yard field-goal attempt on the final play and No. 1 Alabama escaped with a 12-10 victory over the rival Volunteers on Saturday.
Cody broke through the line on the last play and practically ran into Daniel Lincoln's low kick. Relieved Alabama fans chanted "Cody" as the All-American ambled toward the locker room. It was Cody's second blocked field goal of the fourth quarter.
Leigh Tiffin booted four field goals — including a 50-yarder and a 49-yarder — to provide all Alabama's offense and the Tide (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) survived Mark Ingram's first college fumble and some problems for the nation's top defense.
Tennessee (3-4, 1-3) kept alive its hopes for coach Lane Kiffin's first huge victory with Eric Berry's fumble recovery and Jonathan Crompton's 11-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Jones with 1:19 left. Then Tennessee's Denarius Moore recovered the onside kick at the Vols' 41 with no time outs remaining.
Crompton hit Jones on a 14-yarder before Tennessee was pushed back by a false start. On second down, the much-maligned Crompton hit Luke Stocker for a 23-yard gain to get the Vols into position for the potential game-winning kick.
But Cody and the Tide made a big push, and Alabama still controls its destiny in the national title race.
Tiffin's 49-yarder with 6:31 left had barely cleared the uprights for the 12-3 lead and, it turns out, the decisive points. That came after Cody batted Lincoln's 43-yard field goal attempt with his left hand.
Tennessee would get new life when Ingram lost the first fumble of his career, giving the Vols the ball back at the Bama 43. All-American safety Eric Berry jarred the ball loose as Ingram was going down, and then recovered it.
Crompton overcame a sack on the first play and completed 4-of-4 passes for 42 yards and the TD to make it 12-10. Alabama had nearly made it three games in a row without allowing a touchdown.
It was the second straight fourth-quarter scare for Alabama, which also needed a late score to ensure a 20-6 win over South Carolina.
The Volunteers now have tested two No. 1 teams. They lost 23-13 to then-No. 1 Florida earlier and Kiffin's team came even closer this time.
Tennessee was unranked the last time it beat a No. 1, topping Auburn 38-20 in 1985.
Alabama was held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since the Mississippi State game in 2007.
The Vols outgained Alabama 341-256 and Crompton outplayed the Tide's Greg McElroy. He was 21-of-36 passing for 265 yards with an early interception and did a good job of keeping the ball away from the Tide.
McElroy's 18-of-29 day came mostly on short passes and produced 120 yards. Ingram gained 99 yards on 18 carries after gaining 418 yards the previous two games.
Alabama's defense was still stingy against the run, holding Monterio Hardesty to 48 yards on 17 carries and allowing Tennessee just 76 yards.
After Cody's first block, McElroy passed for a first down and ran for another to move the Tide down the field. His underneath pass to Roy Upchurch was stopped short of a first down when Upchurch got entangled with an official.
Tiffin came in to make it a two-score game, and Alabama forced Tennessee into one of its few three-and-outs.
Ingram ran for one first down before the Tide was forced to punt again. But Chris Donald was called for roughing the kicker, giving Bama a first down.
That appeared to secure the win, but the normally sure-handed Ingram gave the Vols another shot.

You are right. Many players take their helmet off after the game is over. There is no penalty. Too bad so many "experts" don't know the rules.

Hey Tomstimber, the Gators beat the Vols too. And by more than two points.

Funny reading all of the comments about Cody pulling off his helmet as a potential penalty. Maybe now they will have all of the hoopla about Bama paying off the referees for not calling it or something.

See who will return to number One in ALL of the polls this week.

Although time had expired, it was still a live ball until it crossed the line of scrimmage, meaning the game was still going. It was pretty difficult to see exactly where the ball was when the helmet came off, but it was definitely glossed over and deserved some scrutiny. There were several of us watching who weren't fans of either team that all pretty much simultaneously said, 'Hey, wait a sec...that should have been an unsportsmanlike penalty.' We rewound and watched several times on DVR and it very well could have been flagged.

Wow, look at all the haters come out to greet Bama. A hard fought win. ..."the refs saved us" ... um...no. The refs are the reason it was even close. Cody's helmet...this is the ultimate..."i wish Bama would lose" statement. Let me set everything straight, so all of you Bama haters can feel nervous. Defense wins championships -- Is there another team that has held Tennessee to 10 points or less this year? Tennessee's touchdown drive was luck. Caught us in a 3rd down blitz w/ a DE covering a TE not to mention one of the blitzing LBs getting held and no call. But you know what, it doesn't even matter cause we won and the last 3 games 1 touchdown given up. I will take that all day long. So Bama fans if anyone should ask you what happen, just say "We won and we are still on the road to the NC, how is your team doing?"
