Forgotten Miracle: The Story of the 1960 US Olympic Hockey Team

You probably won't get much of an argument if you were to name the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team's victory over the Soviet Union at Lake Placid as the most iconic moment in American sports history.

Twenty years before that team's improbable run to the Gold Medal, another U.S. team was pulling off a stunning upset upset of its own at the Sqauw Valley games, as a group of college kids led by head coach Jack Riley claimed the American's first gold medal in Olympic hockey history. A new DVD tilted Forgotten Miracle is set to be released to mark the 40th anniversary of their victory and tell their story.

Danny Briere Suspended 2 Games

The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their third game in a row on Monday night, losing 5-4 in Colorado. On Tuesday they learned they will be without forward Danny Briere for the next two games as a result of his hit on Scott Hannan in the second period.

The Value of a Shootout Specialist

The idea of 65 minutes of hockey (including overtime) being decided by what is essentially a skills competition is one of the most polarizing rule changes hockey has seen over the the past decade.

Love it or hate it, the shootout is a part of the NHL and it's not likely to be going away anytime soon. So, is it worth it for a team to carry a "shootout specialist," even if he has potentially no other value as an NHL player?

Losing Alex Ovechkin for two weeks didn't stop the Washington Capitals from winning games, and he picked up right where he left off in his return, scoring his 15th goal of the season in a 4-2 win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. With that, the Caps take over the top spot in this week's NHL Power Rankings, while another team reclaims its familiar spot at the bottom of the pile.

Scott Niedermayer Attempts to Give Away Stick, Angry Fans Brawl

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer decided to celebrate his team's 4-3 overtime win (in which he scored the game-winning goal) against the Tampa Bay Lightning by giving his stick to a young girl seated in the front row.

Unfortunately, that's when the lower bowl of the Honda Center turned into the thunderdome and fists started to fly. (Video of the incident after the jump.)

Leafs, Canes Play Game of the Night; Refs Miss Another Call

If you weren't expecting much from the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night, you're forgiven.

After all, the two teams entered the game with a combined 22 points on the season (there were eight individual teams in action on Thursday that had more points than that) and were the bottom two clubs in the NHL standings. That didn't stop them from playing what turned out to be one hell of a hockey game, as the Hurricanes picked up a 6-5 shootout win.

Red Wings Get Robbed on What Might Be Worst Call of the Season

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Dallas Stars, 3-1, on Wednesday night, and it's possible that the game could have had a far different outcome had the referees not taken a goal away from Brad May at the 6:40 mark of the third period.

I'm not one to blame officials for teams losing games, but every once in a while the men in stripes make a call that defies all reason and logic, and this is one of those moments.

Terrell Suggs Has Partially Torn MCL, Brady Quinn Fined

Week 10's punt-fest between the Browns and Ravens was one of the worst Monday Night games in recent memory. The Ravens' offense struggled to move the ball consistently, and the Browns' offense was nothing but two-yard dive plays into the middle of the line and wide receiver screens that Baltimore's defense blew up before they even had a chance to develop.

As a result, the only thing anybody still wants to talk about after the Ravens' 16-0 win is Brady Quinn's low-block on an interception return in the third quarter, when he knocked linebacker Terrell Suggs out of the game with a knee injury. According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, early MRI results revealed a partially torn MCL for the pass-rushing linebacker, and he could miss the next two to three weeks.

Steelers Fan Claims He Was Poisoned, Blinded in Chicago Bar

If you've ever seen the Pittsburgh Steelers play a road game, it's not uncommon to see thousands of fans in black and gold in the stands (much to the chagrin of the local fans/writers), while you can probably find a "black-and-gold-bar" in just about every major city in the United States.

Needless to say, if the Steelers are playing, there's going to be a lot of fans with Pittsburgh-ties in the area. Their Week 2 game in Chicago, a 17-14, loss was no different, and one fan, 46-year-old Zack Eddinger, claims he was poisoned (and blinded) in a Chicago bar after an altercation with a group of Bears fans.

Goal Celebration Goes Terribly Wrong

I'm not sure what I'd do in celebration if I ever had the opportunity to score a goal in a professional hockey game, but my first reaction would probably be to simply throw myself into glass (before I woke up, of course). That's kind of what Henrik Andersen, a player in Sweden, attempted to do after scoring a goal in a recent game for Leksend. That's when things took a turn for the absurd.

Brendan Shanahan Retires: Great Player, Entertaining Person

Brendan Shanahan announced his retirement on Tuesday afternoon, ending a 21-year career that saw him finish with 656 goals (11th all time), 698 assists and 1,354 points with the New Jersey Devils, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.

He was a member of three Stanley Cup winning teams (all in Detroit), an eight-time All-Star and a two-time 50-goal scorer.

Not only was he a dominating player on the ice, he was also an extremely entertaining person off of it.
