Washington State fans lived in fear when coach Tony Bennett was mentioned in connection with recent openings at Indiana and Louisiana State. But Cougars fans had to feel pretty good when Bennett decided to stay in Pullman.

Imagine the gut punch when Bennett accepted a job to a mid-card ACC team. (Seriously, Virginia?)

Now the Washington State program sits at a crossroads where it can either build on the success of Bennett's teams, or the program can slip back into the Pac-10 abyss.

The Mountain West is as major conference that nobody wants to admit is a major conference. The Mountain West thoroughly embarrassed the Pac-10 in football during the regular season and Utah proved that it was the best team on the field after walloping Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. To make matters worse, the trouble-making conference wants to propose a college football playoff.

The NCAA wasn't about to take that lying down.

You can't blame Jim Calhoun if he's whistling "Route 66" over the next couple of days because he certainly loves to travel west. Both of Calhoun's national championship teams, in 1999 and 2004, came out of the West Region. So Calhoun's probably feeling like a million bucks right now -- or $1.6 million bucks, as we all now know he makes (But he's worth it, just ask him.) -- with Connecticut grabbing the top spot out west.

San Diego State could have spent the night partying on the strip, rolling through the Tropicana, Flamingo and Imperial Palace (hey, they are college students they can't afford the Bellagio) as Mountain West champions. And more importantly, basking in the high-roller status of being automatic tournament qualifiers.

Instead they will lie awake in bed tonight, nursing a hangover like one of those fools who wake up with wedding bands, wondering who that person laying next to them is. The Aztecs had an opportunity to punch its own ticket to the dance, and didn't do it. Now the anxiety starts.

San Diego State looks like it should be in the tournament. The team has dealt with suspensions, illness and injuries to put up a pretty solid record. The only dings are early losses to St. Mary's and Arizona -- two fellow bubble teams. However, the Aztecs finished the season strong, and knocked off UNLV and BYU in the conference tournament.

Logic says State is in. But this being the NCAA tournament, you can never assume.

The mascots for Utah State and New Mexico State got into a tussle in the closing moments of the team's intense WAC tournament semifinal game on Friday night.

Utah State's mascot Big Blue ripped the fake porn mustache off Pistol Pete to start the melee. (After all, you can't steal a fake mustache and expect to get away with it.)

Mascots Behaving Badly

    One pull of the mustache turns into a fight between New Mexico State mascot Pistol Pete, pictured, and Utah State's Big Blue the bull mascot. After Big Blue ripped off Pistol Pete's fake mustache, the cowboy chased the bull down and tried to choke his rival during conference tournament play. A number of bubble teams won't sleep easy, especially with Southern California finally starting to play up to the potential that landed the team in the preseason Top 25. And doesn't it always seem to happen that way? A talented team underachieves during the regular season, but a light finally goes off during the conference tournament leading to a run to the dance.

That is exactly what is happening to the Trojans, who moved one step closer to the NCAA tournament by knocking off crosstown rival UCLA.

But should the bubble teams be worried about USC winning the Pac-10 tournament?

San Diego State was on the bubble depending on which bracket projection you wanted to believe, but there is absolutely no denying it now -- the Aztecs are in the NCAA tournament following a huge win over BYU in the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament.

The Mountain West now looks like a solid three-bid conference and some cock-eyed optimists still believe that UNLV has a shot at a bid. But for right now, Utah, BYU and San Diego State appear to be locks.

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has been in love with the Mountain West Conference for most of the season, at one point believing that five teams could get into the NCAA tournament. That's not going to happen now. UNLV looked pathetic on its home court, losing a third game this season to San Diego State and greatly diminishing any hopes that the Rebels had of making a third consecutive NCAA appearance.

But the Rebels weren't the only team that struggled in the early rounds of the conference tournaments. Is there any hope that UNLV might sneak into this thing?

To say that the University of Southern California's basketball season was a disappointment is akin to say that you might see a few Masters commercials during March Madness. Which is to say one of your all-time understatements.

The Trojans started the season with lofty expectations, with thoughts of possibly challenging UCLA for conference supremacy. Instead, there were shots to the groin, talk of potential program killing violations and a coach that often behaved like Billy Mays in a wind tunnel. Only Tim Floyd wasn't quite as composed.

But the Ides of March has a way of cleansing sins and bad losses. And the Trojans are back in the NCAA hunt. Something that should concern the bubble teams.

The Western Athletic Conference could move its tournament to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in 2011, joining the West Coast Conference and Mountain West Conference which also host tournaments in Sin City.

Hey Pac-10 and Big West, what are you doing having your conference tournaments in Los Angeles and Anaheim respectively? Maybe you too could move your tournaments to Las Vegas. Maybe they could erect a court on Fremont Street and have them play.

But, for right now, the WAC appears serious.

Gonzaga and St. Mary's opened the WCC tournament final with Matt Boldin shooting a pair of technical free throws after the Gaels' Omar Samhan dunked in warmups.

That turned out to be the highlight of St. Mary's evening.

St. Mary's moved into the West Coast Conference finals with a convincing win over Portland. But was it convincing enough for the Gaels to get into the NCAA tournament barring Monday's finals outcome? Right now, St. Mary's looks deserving enough to get into the tournament. The Gaels are a much more complete team right now.

Almost as if losing Mills for a stretch made this team better. But St. Mary's looked impressive enough on Sunday night to make its case to be included in the field of 65.

There was a forgettable movie released around 10 years ago called The Sixth Man starring Marlon Wayans and Kadeem Hardison as brothers -- one from beyond the grave -- who lead the University of Washington to an NCAA title.

The movie always seemed like make believe. No, not that a ghost came back from the dead to lead a college basketball team to a championship. Rather, that it was Washington winning a championship. The Huskies have never been thought of as a national power.

But those days are over now that Washington has won the Pac-10 title outright for the first time since 1953.

The West Coast Conference tournament starts tonight in Las Vegas, but nobody is really going to be paying attention until Sunday when St. Mary's Patrick Mills makes his much anticipated return. No offense to LMU, San Diego, Pepperdine or USF, but like most opening acts in Las Vegas, nobody cares.

(Well not nobody. The WCC did sell out all of its all-tournament passes before the first tonight's tip-off. So maybe that move to a neutral court in Las Vegas wasn't a bad move afterall. Remember this when the Pac-10 and the other big schools play conference tournaments in front of empty crowds.)

College basketball coaches are always looking for that edge. And Oregon State's Craig Robinson is no different than say, Ben Howland, Mike Montgomery or Tim Floyd in that respect. (Well, given USC's recent troubles, maybe Floyd isn't a good example.)

College recruiting can be competitive and tough. So any coach would be foolish to turn down any recruiting help. Especially recruiting help from family. Especially family that just happens to be the President of the United States.

The Mountain West might be one of the competitive and even divisions in college basketball, plagued with the same parity that has been evident in most major conferences. So don't fault Utah for losing at BYU and at New Mexico recently. The Utes fell to the Papagiorgio curse more than anything else. (Ask UCLA fans about that.)

The Mountain West is wide open and the most realistic possibility is that three teams,Utah, BYU and New Mexico, could share the conference title. And you know who is the most important team in the Mountain West right now? Wyoming.
