It was certainly further evidence that the Pac-10 is back as a national conference.

After two overtimes and a touchdown with six seconds left in regulation, the Oregon Ducks outlasted Arizona 44-41 to take control of the Pac-10.

For a while, the stars seemed to align for Arizona. California upset Stanford during the the third quarter of the Wildcats' game, bumping one Pac-10 peer from Rose Bowl contention. Meanwhile, Arizona shrugged off a 14-0 deficit to take a 24-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

However, Oregon then rallied with 17 points in the final frame, including a highlight-worthy touchdown pass from Jeremiah Masoli to Ed Dickson with six seconds left that deflated the home crowd and dispersed the students, who had emerged nearby to storm the field.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

We have no choice, really, since Florida and Alabama slotted in tomato cans Chattanooga and Florida International. For additional inspiration, look to the Big Tenleven's newest hackneyed rivalry between Penn State and Michigan State.

As usual we'll be here to talk about whats going on as its going on. So come on down, hit the keypad a little and join the conversation in the FanHouse Saturday College Football Chat starting at 3 PM Eastern.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Florida hosts Florida International. Alabama hosts Chattanooga. Texas hosts mutinous Kansas. TCU travels to Wyoming. Boise State travels to Utah State. Combined opponent records? 22 and 28 (.440). This is not good for the competitive image of college football. Like a frustrated Pete Carroll we want to ask, 'what's your deal?'

If that's not interesting conversation, perhaps the ugly hot seat discussions around Bobby Bowden and Mark Mangino will satisfy your taste for mid-day blood as distraction from the rat race. Man drama, embrace it! Point being, lets talk -- college football. You, me, some other FanHouse college football writers. This week's Midweek College Football Chat commences at 2 PM Eastern, chat application after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Meanwhile, the cold night at Autzen Stadium seemingly prompted the Duck coaching staff to give Blount -- suspended since Sept. 4 for punching a Boise State player and refusing to leave the stadium peacefully -- the cold shoulder.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Arizona Likely Drops Out Of Pac-10 Race

Heading into today, five teams were still competing for a shot at the Rose Bowl: Oregon, Stanford, Oregon State, Arizona and USC. Stanford's wood-shedding of USC eliminated one contender in a big way, and Cal likely did Arizona the honors in bumping the Wildcats 24-16.

Arizona, of course, is the only team in the league not to have gone to the Rose Bowl. The fact has been a nagging itch for the Wildcat football program, desperate for consistency and a trip to Pasadena to hang their hat on.

The Wildcats likely won't get it in 2009.

Cal kept quarterback Nick Foles and the Wildcat offense in check throughout, limiting Arizona to just 17 first downs and 276 yards. Its a disappointing elimination for Arizona, which had won three in a row including a wild victory over surging Stanford, 43-38.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Badly. This time by Stanford, which walloped the Trjoans 55-21. The point total was the most ever surrendered at home by the Trojans; Pete Carroll's unbeaten November win streak went by the wayside.

Of course, the points surrendered record wasn't exactly something out of the yellowing pages of history. That record was an august two weeks old. Oregon beat Carroll by 27 on Halloween, 47-20 (tripling the previous record loss, 11 points, to Notre Dame in 2001). Saturday, Stanford did the Ducks eight points better.

What happened?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Unbeaten Cincinnati barely survived a home battle with West Virginia last night. Later today, Iowa and Ohio State face off to determine who goes to the Rose Bowl. Elsewhere, a resurgent Pac-10 is home to several critical conference battles in a wacky race. Yeah, its a good weekend for college football and we're going to enjoy this.

With all that on the docket, be sure to cherish a fine Saturday like this and keep the computer nearby. As usual College Football FanHouse is hosting a mid-day chat while immersed in the day's events. Four weeks of games and then this muddy mess of a 2009 college football regular season is over. Meanwhile, an uncomfortable six teams remain undefeated. Until all that construction dust settles, and maybe afterward, we're left with angst and BCS drama as the politicking plays out. Lovely stuff.

This weekend should hopefully sort some of that out but in the meantime we've got opinions we'd like to share (pssst, Cincy won't get my BCS vote, not after letting Connecticut drop 45 on them last week), you've got yours. Its Thursday which means lets amicably sort it all out in the weekly FanHouse College Football Chat. You know the drill, chat starts at 2 PM Eastern, chat application after the jump, do join us.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Midway through the second quarter, Best rose high into the air to hurdle Oregon State safety Cameron Collins on the way to a touchdown, but fell onto his back and neck and was left immobile from the play.

Best's helmet flew off from the impact with the ground and his arms immediately went stiff.

The running back was carted off the field on a stretcher and transported to a local emergency room for observation. According to Cal spokesman Herb Benenson, Best had feeling in all his extremities but suffered a concussion.

Best suffered what the team called a "mild concussion" last week against Arizona.

But coach Jeff Tedford said all other tests were negative.

"He's in good shape," Tedford told the media.

Video of the play after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Instead, it's the mid-day shift featuring games between LSU and Alabama and Ohio State and Penn State. Wouldn't you know, those overlap with our weekly FanHouse Saturday chat.

Elsewhere, its a quiet weekend at first glance but 11 ranked teams are on the road, something worth monitoring. So, swing on by and join us and our writers in an ongoing discussion through the middle of the the day. Our daytime chat missed the wreckage but we're welcoming everyone back for a discussion of that seismic event this Thursday, starting at 2 PM Eastern. There's also this little matter of determining whether LSU is a legitimate stumbling block for suddenly shaky Alabama.

That may be the only marquee game of the weekend but overall this week eleven ranked teams will be playing on the road, an always dangerous event in the bloodthirsty fan atmosphere of college football. So please join us once again in our weekly Thursday discussion. Oregon's football program unequivocally demolished longtime Pac-10 overlord USC 47 to 20 on Saturday, effectively putting the brakes on two major, likely never to be repeated feats the Trojans had accomplished.

USC's record streak of seven Pac-10 championships is likely done, as is its even more impressive run of never losing by more than 11 points in the Pete Carroll era (and never by more than seven points once things really got rolling in 2002).

The Ducks finished with a 27-point winning margin and it easily could have been more. It was a two-sided wholesale destruction few outside of Autzen could have reasonably anticipated given the nature of USC's run these last few years. As a USC guy I knew it had to happen eventually, but I was thinking something like a 14-point loss, something reasonable.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

With a scary slate of games scheduled for Halloween night it begs us to ask, is this a trick or a treat? Like that creaky floorboard and a rustling just outside your door, some of us perhaps cower at what might be around the corner -- Alabama's first Heisman? Texas and its impotent run game in the BCS Championship? Nooo, nooooo! we tremble.

But maybe its just a nightmare. A scary dream. We can only guess at the yet-to-be-revealed future. In the absence of a soothsayer, let's return to this weekly ritual and discuss matters some more inside the FanHouse Midweek College Football Chat, hmmm? Don't be afraid (mwahahahahhaha). If you're an SEC honk, its good times. If you're undefeated Iowa you're wondering why one loss USC is breathing down your neck. If you're USC, well, Pete Carroll's already had his say. River. Rivalry. USC against Notre Dame. National title implications and plain old rivalry are at work in this great weekend for college football. Four of the game's biggest lightning rods headline the first two shifts. Oklahoma limps in but has a chance to regain its form in the face of recent losses to Texas and scuttle the Longhorns' championship dreams. That time is now, with the annual Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma and the greatest intersectional (and lately, the only one) of them all, USC at Notre Dame just in time for the boys from California to avoid that wintery weather stuff most of the country suffers through.

Point is, we're excited. Sure, there's other football but on Saturday these games are like the disproportionately hot girls in the room drawing in the boys. They've sure got nice assets. What? How can you not look longingly at those combined 21 Heisman Trophies. Or the combined 3,233 wins. So uh, lets talk about it. The FanHouse Midweek College Football Chat commences today at 2 PM Eastern. Be there. Chat application after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

And that's a weekend without either USC or Notre Dame. Florida's trip to LSU and its dreaded night games in Death Valley is the clear headliner -- will he or won't he? - but there's much more to enjoy. Iowa and Michigan meet in a classic measuring stick game, same with Wisconsin and Ohio State. Georgia and Tennessee will likely engage in a slugfest. The Pac-10's 'muddled middle' sees Stanford facing Oregon State and Oregon facing UCLA. Lots to enjoy.

We'll try and keep you entertained during the middle swing of games today, with our FanHouse chat commencing at 3 PM Eastern. Chat application after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Florida is dragging its feet on deciding whether to play concussed quarterback Tim Tebow whose Kryptonite was revealed last week as the meeting place between the back of his head and a teammates leg. Meanwhile LSU and coach Les Miles are saying all the right things, which doesn't come easy with that program. Weird. Very, very weird. I think Alabama's the better team right now anyway. A Florida defeat eases the dilemma.

There's other football to be played of course, other matters to be discussed (welcome back from your week off, Texas, you could be No. 1 after Saturday). Sooooo, let's talk about it like we do every Thursday. The FanHouse Midweek College Football Chat will commence at 2 PM Eastern. Chat application after the jump (we'll leave it open for folks to post comments and questions in advance, they need approval so won't appear until 2 PM but we'll see them, don't worry).

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow returned to practice -- albeit in a limited manner -- Tuesday. This more than a week after a concussion against Kentucky left him a physical, hospitalized mess on national television. Florida has yet to publicly name Tebow's backup John Brantley the starter ahead of this week's game against LSU.

Its probably head games, but even if Tebow is 'cleared' Florida would have to be insane to play him. Head injuries are no joke and Tebow has well earned that baby rhinocerus nickname. Mix in his all-out style with LSU's terrific hitting and its an easy call: sit him. LSU is prepared for either quarterback and delaying only makes Meyer look desperate while potentially undermining Brantley before his first career start.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
