Marion BarberIRVING, Texas -- Cowboys starting running back Marion Barber has a strained quad muscle in his left leg and is questionable for Dallas' game against Carolina on Sept. 28. An MRI revealed the strain Monday. (Update, Sept. 22: Barber is out for one-to-two weeks, according to a report from NBC 5 in Dallas Tuesday.)

Barber was injured in the fourth quarter during a 35-yard run in the Cowboys' 33-31 loss to the Giants on Sunday night. Barber broke through the New York defense and appeared headed for the end zone when he pulled up lame, fell to the ground, and left the field pointing at his left leg.

He did not return to the game and finished with 124 yards rushing and a touchdown on 18 carries. If Barber is unable to play in Week 3, Felix Jones, who started in Sunday night's second half, would move up to the first team on the depth chart.

Cowboys StadiumARLINGTON, Tx. -- A new $1.2 billion stadium officially opened on Sunday night in this city that sits 30 minutes between Fort Worth and Dallas, as the Dallas Cowboys hosted the New York Giants.

The Cowboys announced that 105,121 were distributed for Sunday night's game -- though there were several empty seats in scattered sections throughout this palace -- making it the largest crowd to see a regular-season game in NFL history. The previous attendance record was 103,467 for a 49ers-Cardinals game in 2005 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

Lawrence TynesARLINGTON, Texas -- Sunday was supposed to be all about the Cowboys and the debut of their $1.2 billion home. Instead, the Giants spoiled the party.

Dallas prepared for the opening of the new Cowboys Stadium with a Diana Ross-headlined, private get-together on Saturday night. Former President George W. Bush conducted the coin toss, and the Cowboys devoted the entire halftime to celebrating their Ring of Honor.

All the festivities ended late Sunday, though, as the Giants grabbed a gritty 33-31 victory that ended when Lawrence Tynes made a 37-yard field goal as time expired.

"I don't know what they expected," Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said. "I guess we were the ugliest person asked to come to homecoming, huh?"

Justin TuckARLINGTON, Texas -- A shoulder injury knocked Giants defensive end Justin Tuck out of Sunday night's victory over the Cowboys late in the first half.

Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams kicked Tuck in the knee as he moved past him, and as a result, Tuck fell hard on his left shoulder.

Tuck did not return, and Adams was penalized for tripping.

After the game Tuck said his shoulder was fine, though he could barely lift it, using his right arm to button his shirt. When asked about Adams' play, Tuck said, "It was bush league. He did it a few times in this game. I'd like to have the rest of the game to punish him for it."

Jerry Rice and Emmitt SmithThe Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the nominees for induction into its Class of 2010 on Saturday.

Wide receiver Jerry Rice and running back Emmitt Smith headline a group of 131 players, coaches and contributors that make up the list of modern-era nominees for election. Former Lions cornerback and current Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and former Broncos running back Floyd Little are the two senior nominees that were picked in August by the Hall of Fame's Senior Selection Committee.

The semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 27, and the modern-era finalists will be chosen on Jan. 7. The entire 2010 class will be revealed the day before the Super Bowl on Feb. 6 in Miami.

Chris CantyDALLAS -- Giants defensive end/tackle Chris Canty will miss Sunday's game against the Cowboys with a calf injury.

Canty had circled this game the moment he left the Cowboys to sign a free-agent deal in New York. Canty, a Bronx native who grew up in the Charlotte area, had battled a hamstring injury in training camp and was thought to be healthy enough for the regular season.

But Wednesday, Canty hurt his calf and missed practice the last two days.

With the Giants using numerous defensive linemen, missing Canty won't hurt as much. Using a rotation wears down offensive linemen.

Steve SlatonIf the Houston Texans want to be taken seriously in the NFL, they have to earn a wild-card berth or win the AFC South this season.

But on Sunday against the Jets, the Texans looked terrible.

They gained just 183 total offensive yards as their offensive line had problems containing New York's pass rush. Quarterback Matt Schaub, who insists he's healthy, completed just 18 of 33 passes for 166 yards. The Texans had no offensive touchdowns. Running back Steve Slaton averaged just 1.9 yards per carry and wide receiver Andre Johnson had four catches for 35 yards.

The Texans were beaten up in Week 1, though it doesn't excuse their miserable performance -- and things don't get any easier this week then they visit the Titans.

HOUSTON -- Just before kickoff between the Jets and Texans on Sunday, Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was one of the last players to run off the field into the locker room.

But Sanchez made a detour to speak with a legend. The Jets' young phenom needed some last minute advice from Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath.

Sanchez asked Namath what he remembered about his first game as a rookie. Namath said he couldn't remember.

PITTSBURGH -- He stood behind a podium dressed in a collared shirt with blue jeans. Kerry Collins, the Titans quarterback, looked more like a country singer talking about an album that just isn't selling well.

Collins, instead, was talking about missed opportunities following a 13-10 overtime loss to the Steelers Thursday night.

"Yeah, it was a shame," Collins said. "We let that one get away. But on the road, against a good football team, if you make the mistakes we made, you're going to lose more ball games than you win. So it's disappointing. It's one of those things where you have to learn from it and move on."

PITTSBURGH -- Maybe it was just one game.

Maybe.

But the Steelers, a noted run-first offensive team, looked slow during a 13-10 overtime win to the Titans on Thursday night.

Last season, the Steelers finished with the 23rd best rushing attack in the game. Willie Parker (791 yards) and Rashard Mendenhall (58 yards) battled injuries and it left Mewelde Moore, a third down man, to carry things. Yet, it didn't stop them from winning the Super Bowl.

To return to the Super Bowl, or at least make a deep playoff run, the Steelers need to run the ball effectively.

Ben RoethlisbergerPITTSBURGH -- The Steelers won the Super Bowl last season, thanks in part to their poise while handling a difficult regular-season schedule.

In 2008, Pittsburgh played against seven playoff teams -- a grind that helped them prepare for the postseason. The Steelers celebrated that postseason on Thursday night, dropping a huge championship banner behind one of the Heinz Field goal posts before they took on Tennessee in the NFL's season opener.

The fans went crazy, but their team strolled onto the field as if that Super Bowl title never existed. There would be no ring ceremony. There would be no marching the Lombardi Trophy around at midfield.

Last year was last year, and if the Steelers are going to repeat, they have to play it cool.

PITTSBURGH -- Five-time Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu was not seen in the Steelers locker room after their overtime victory over the Titans on Thursday night, because he was busy getting treatment on a sprained MCL in his left knee.

Polamalu was injured late in the first half when the Steelers' Aaron Smith blocked Titans kicker Rob Bironas on a 31-yard field goal attempt. In a pileup for the loose ball, at least one player landed on Polamalu's left leg as he did the splits, causing his knee to buckle. He left the field on his own power but didn't return to the game and wasn't on the sideline the entire second half.

Polamalu will undergo further tests on Friday to determine long-term damage.

Wade Phillips Dick JauronThe season is finally here, and for some coaches, this could be their last year in the league. Or maybe their last few months.

The two coaches with the biggest challenges facing them are Bills coach Dick Jauron and Cowboys coach Wade Phillips.

Jauron fired offensive coordinator Turk Schonert last week in an effort to simplify the offense and to give his players a chance to relax. A source said Schonert was aloof and rubbed several players the wrong way. Alex Van Pelt, the new offensive coordinator, and running backs coach Eric Studesville are both well liked and respected in the locker room.

Pacman JOnesWell, Pacman Jones isn't going to play in the CFL after all.

Jones, the twice-suspended NFL player, who was on the active rosters of the Cowboys and Titans, had been in the final stages of signing a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

But after a Ustream video that aired Wednesday night (and can be viewed after the jump), the Winnipeg Sun reports the Bombers had enough.

Roger StaubachIf there is somebody who understands what Michael Vick is going through on the field, it's former Cowboys quarterback and Hall of Famer Roger Staubach.

Vick, who is expected to play for the Eagles in Thursday's preseason finale against the Jets, has just started his comeback after serving a two-year prison term on dogfighting charges.

Staubach underwent a similar, more honorable absence from the game. After finishing his playing career for the Naval Academy in 1964, Staubach had to fulfill his military commitment. The Cowboys selected him in the 10th round of the 1964 draft, but Staubach did not actually debut until 1969 because he was serving with the U.S. Navy.

"You have to have the confidence," Staubach told FanHouse this week. "If you're physically able to do it a few years ago, why can't you get back into it? If you have the talent and you can hang in there, and if you haven't lost speed or strength, you can make it happen again."

Brett FavreThere was much consternation around the NFL when the Vikings brought Brett Favre back. The move raised plenty of questions about Favre's ability to help Minnesota, too -- adding an old quarterback with a partially torn rotator cuff who's coming off biceps surgery was certainly a gamble.

But for the Vikings, it's worth risking the season.

NFL teams need elite quarterbacks to succeed at an elite level. Adding Favre makes Minnesota's offense one of the best in the NFC, if he's used right.

Brett FavreHOUSTON -- Brett Favre said he wasn't sure what to expect in his second start since joining the Vikings.

When his night was complete, Favre had completed 13-of-18 passes for 142 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions -- good for a 113.7 QB rating in Minnesota's 17-10 preseason win over Houston at Reliant Stadium on Monday.

The Vikings scored all 17 of their points with Favre at quarterback, a span of seven possessions. Favre was happy with the performance, but said improvements can be made.

"It felt good," Favre said. "Still a lot to work on, overall. We had a lot of penalties, just a good bit of them were procedural, that falls back on me, the snap count, putting guys in motion, things like that. It was a good test for us."

ARLINGTON, Tx -- The Cowboys offense can be good and bad without wide receiver Roy Williams.

The first-team offense scored 10 points and had a field goal nullified by a penalty in a preseason game on Saturday night against the 49ers. Yet, this same offense didn't score any first-quarter points for the first time this preseason.

Williams is out with a shoulder contusion and coach Wade Phillips said following the 49ers' 20-13 victory that his wide receiver is feeling better.

The biggest off-field story of the week came to an end on Friday when the NFL decided the Dallas Cowboys' 90-foot high video board, the largest in the world at a sporting venue, can stay the same height. The league clarified its rules regarding what happens when a ball hits a video board, guide wire, sky cam or any other object.

"The ball will be dead immediately, and the down will be replayed at the previous spot," the league said in a statement. "If there is not an on-field ruling that the ball struck an object, the Replay Assistant is empowered to initiate a booth review, including if the event occurs prior to the two-minute warning."

Roy WilliamsCowboys wide receiver Roy Williams suffered a shoulder contusion at the end of Thursday's practice according to team officials.

On Friday, team officials said X-rays of Williams' shoulder were negative and revealed no fracture. Williams will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

Initially the Cowboys originally believed Williams may have broken his collarbone.

Williams did not return a text message seeking comment Thursday night.
