QBs seemed to never get touched for the most part. Pats brought the blitz but the Colts adapted.
*Both QBs were great when the game was all said and done. Peyton was bad in the first half but couldn't have been better in the second. The Brady-Manning hype didn't disappoint.
*Colts weren't afraid to go deep down the the field. Marvin, Reggie came so close on so many deep plays but could never connect on a deep bomb. Fletcher, Clark and Moorehead all came up with big deep plays. Good to see the Colts not afraid to throw it deep.
*Dallas Clark continues to be a big part of the offense. His 137 yards once again lead the Colts in receiving yards.
*Dominic was great yesterday as well. Him and Addai both had 14 carries each, but Dominic had 13 more yards, and also had 38 receiving yards.
*Peyton will be fine, don't worry.
*Only one sack for the Colts (Brock), kind of disappointing at home but the Pats have a good O-Line.
*Brackett lead the team in tackles and played very well all game long.
*If you didn't believe me when I talked about how underrated Harper is, believe it now. Hayden was not nearly as good as Harper and it showed. We need him badly for the Super Bowl.
*Sanders, Harper, Brackett, Freeney, Utecht, Peyton and Marvin were all banged up at some point during the game. They will all most likely play (maybe not Harper), and the extra week will help a ton, this is when I realize that I like having a week off before the Super Bowl.
*Kick coverage was terrible. The 80 yarder to Hobbs right after our touchdown was unacceptable. They had been doing good at kick coverage and it was bad again yesterday.
*Peyton won this game for us, and was just better than Brady.

Still shocked at the finish to this game! One more task: XLI

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by Eric Conner
Filed under: Colts, AFC South, NFL Playoffs
I meant to write something right after the game, but I was speechless.

I challenge all Colts fans to find a greater game in Colts history, because I can't. The most exciting game I had ever seen was when we came from behind a few years ago to beat the Bucs in dramatic fashion.

There isn't anything better than what just happened. Down by 15 at halftime and Peyton gets his boys rolling to score 32 points in the second half. Tom Brady has a drive going with a minute left and Marlin Jackson picks it off. Ha ha! Are you serious? I really can't believe the ending to that game. Can anyone write a better ending to the game that gets us to the Super Bowl? I'm still in shock.

The reason the Colts won was because Peyton outplayed Brady and came up more "clutch" than Mr. Pretty Boy (Gosh, it feels nice to have the right to call Tom Brady a Pretty Boy.)

Forget about the Bears, Colts fans. Who cares right now? I sure don't, because I'm still soaking in this win. Enjoy the win, and worry about the Bears later! The Colts have won three in a row against the Pats now, and this is becoming the best rivalry in the NFL by far.

We do know one thing for sure, Tom Brady is the biggest choker in NFL History! :-)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

At home in the dome vs. the hated New England Patriots with 55,000 sceaming Colts fans smelling a trip to their first ever Super Bowl since the team has been in Indianapolis. Rodney Harrison is out. The Colts are the healthiest they have been all season, and the defense is playing better than ever.

The point is, this is the Colts time to shine. This is time for Peyton to pick up the slack, and get the job done. There's no more excuses, there's no tomorrow, and there's no second chances. The time in now, and if the Colts don't win this game, they may never get a better chance in the Peyton Manning era. They beat the #2 team last week and proved they can win on the road. Now they get redemption against their hated foes, and if they do advance on to the Super Bowl, and win, there will be no but's, and there won't be any question to who the best team in the NFL is.

Playing New England is never fun, but if the Colts do go all the way this year, no one wants to hear "The Colts won, but the Chargers did their dirty work by beating the Pats."

We're healthy, they're not, we're at home, they're on the road, they've done it before, and we haven't.

There's no tomorrow, there's no second chances. It's time for Peyton and the Colts to win, right now!

You just can't script it any better.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Most of it is for obvious reasons, but there is one guy everyone is just missing. His name is Nick Harper and he is one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Don't believe me? Look at these numbers that every teams number 1 receiver put up against the Colts this year (therefore, the guy Harper was mainly guarding.)

Plaxico Burress- 4 catches, 80 yards (touchdown)
Andre Johnson- 4 catches, 56 yards (touchdown)
Reggie Williams- 2 catches, 8 yards
Laveraneus Coles- 6 catches, 81 yards
Drew Bennett- 0 catches, 0 yards
Santana Moss- 3 catches, 20 yards
Javon Walker- 4 catches, 40 yards (touchdown)
Troy Brown- 5 catches, 37 yards
Lee Evans- 5 catches, 70 yards
Terrell Owens- 4 catches, 70 yards
Dante Stallworth- 2 catches, 9 yards
Drew Bennett- 1 catch, 20 yards
Reggie Williams- 3 catches, 16 yards
Chad Johnson- 3 catches, 37 yards
Andre Johnson- 4 catches, 48 yards
Chris Chambers- 3 catches, 39 yards

The playoffs? In the first round vs. Kansas City, the Chiefs had no receptions from their starting receivers, and Derrick Mason had 2 catches and 16 yards last week, while Harper had an interception and caused a fumble!

Sure, a lot of stuff goes into these numbers. A Cover 2 defense helps and so does good pass rush, and sometimes the corners switch which receivers they guard. A terrible rush defense didn't hurt either, because teams loved to run the ball on the Colts. However, these numbers are downright stunning, and the main factor to these amazing numbers are due to the performance of Nick Harper. Even if teams ran the ball on us more than any team in the NFL, you still have to give Harper huge credit for never giving up one big game to a number one target this season. No matter what the circumstances are, Harper was shutting down every great receiver he was matched up against this year, and gets no credit for it.

Nick Harper is the most underrated player on the Colts, and one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. Sign this guy to a long-term contract, NOW!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Larry Johnson was going to run for 500 yards.

It was going to be a shootout.

Peyton throws 3 interceptions. Larry Johnson runs for 32 yards.

Final score: 23-8, in the most unpredictable game in Colts history, and I truly mean that. I was completely shocked the entire game and couldn't figure out what was going on. I don't know how to explain it.

The Colts were sending approximately one player extra to the line to stop Larry Johnson on early running downs, and it worked. The Colts held Larry Johnson to 32 yards, his second lowest total of the season, and by FAR the least amount of rush yards the Colts gave up from their opponents starting running back.

You can say this about a lot of teams in the NFL, but it's more true for the Colts than anybody...If the Colts click on ALL cylinders, they can beat ANYBODY in the NFL by about 30 points. The Bears, Saints, Eagles, Chargers, Pats and Ravens don't stand a chance against the Colts if they can play great in every aspect of the game.

By the way, how about that kick coverage? Besides a bad rush D, there really wasn't anything worse than the bad kick coverage, and other than the one time Adam kicked it out of bounds, the Chiefs never returned it past the 20 yards line.

1 down, 3 to go!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

I don't know anything about a soft defense anymore, all I know is that it's playoff time and time to get PUMPED UP!

All I can read about is how bad our defense is and how bad Larry Johnson is going to tear us alive. The Colts soft and brutal defense might not be as bad as they have looked in the previous weeks, afterall. The Colts will be blessed to have their best defensive player, Bob Sanders, back on the field this week vs. the Chiefs. Bob Sanders has missed all but 4 games this season with a knee injury and will be starting for the first time since week 13. The home fans have only seen Sanders one time this year at home, so you can expect for them to be siked up about their hard-hitting safety returning to the lineup.

Sanders practiced full on Tuesday and Wednesday, and rested a little bit on Thursday, but is still expected to play at full strength.

Don't get me wrong, Sanders isn't going to turn around the Colts defense all by himself, but any Colts fan will tell you Sanders impact on the field will make a huge difference in the pass, and rush defense. Sanders will most likely be rushing for Larry Johnson at the line of scrimmage a bunch of times during this game and can hopefully make some big plays to shut down LJ.

The defense still has a bunch of holes, but hearing that Sanders is going to play is great news, and I speak for all Colts fans when I say: It's about time.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Chiefs barley snuck into the playoffs thanks to the 49ers pulling off an upset in Mile High in overtime to knock the Broncos out of the playoffs. The Jets seemed like an easier match-up for the Colts, and the Broncos seemed to have a better chance at upsetting the Patriots in Foxboro.

The Chiefs run the ball as well and as often as anyone in the NFL and Larry Johnson will give the Colts a very tough task as they have to at least "tame" him to let Peyton take the field. Trent Green and the Chiefs receivers shouldn't scare anyone too much, but you can expect about 75% run plays since the Chiefs love to run the ball, and the Colts hate to stop it.

The Chiefs rank 23rd in the NFL in sacks, and frankly, their pass rush doesn't intimidate anyone, so you should expect the Colts to pass all over them, even with Patrick Surtain and Ty Law, who should give Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne a tough matchup. But if the Chiefs decide to single cover one of the Colts big recievers, look for that guy to have an explosive day. Don't foget that the last time the Colts played the Chiefs, Marvin and Reggie combined for 238 and 4 touchdowns.

Things never seem to make sense in the playoffs, but there is one thing we all know for sure: It's playoff time!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The team hopes Sanders will be good to go in the first round of the playoffs.
-Vinatieri has a hurt knee but is listed as probable and expected to play.
-Rob Morris missed practice Friday but is expected to play with a strained upper leg muscle.
-Marlin Jackson and Gilbert Gardner both returned to practice Friday. Both have been battling the flu.
-Kelvin Hayden will also play, after sustaining a concussion in practice Wednesday.
-Ryan Lilja will NOT play with a strained knee.

Also, Dallas Clark will be in uniform today, and will see limited action. Talk about the most vague injury report ever on Clark...They said originally he might have a torn ACL. This will be a huge boost for the Colts offense, finally gives them a third legit receiver again.
Colts seem pretty healthy today. Hopefully they can bring that into the playoffs.

GO COLTS!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Well Colts fans, this year we find out once and for all. 2005 was...Well, we all know that story. 2004 ended with all the hype around Peyton's TD record and the finale capped off by Jim Sorgi vs. the Broncos. 2003 consisted of a last-second Field Goal by the Idiot Kicker to win the division, and was ended by the infamous Snowy Foxboro in January. 2006? This year we get a different story. As long as they can hold off the Dolphins this week in the dome, the Colts will play the 6th seed (most likely the Jets) in the first round at home. That is, assuming Baltimore can beat the Bills at home, and the Chargers beat the Cardinals. If the Colts do indeed play the Jets at home as the 3 seed in the first round, they will likely play the Ravens in the second round in Baltimore and possibly the next week in San Diego if all goes right (or should I say, the exact OPPOSITE of how thing have been going.) The road to the Super Bowl is tougher than ever for the Colts, but as long as they don't lose to the Dolphins this week, the Colts will not be playing in Foxboro in the snow, and they will show their fans something different for once.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The offense will basically be the same, as there aren't many offensive free agents that need new deals, and there isn't much that needs improvement on offense either. Freeney, Harper, Cato and David don't seem to be the problem with the Colts defense, since covering big-name receivers might actually be the Colts strong point on defense, even though it might be time to give Marlin Jackson a shot to start at corner, who may be a better safety in the long-run. Cato June leads the Colts in tackles (scary thought) and Freeney obviously seems like a can't-miss signing, regardless of how much cash he will command. These four defensive free agents don't seem like the source of the Colts lack of defense, but at some point or another, the Colts need to make a big change on D.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by Eric Conner
The Colts will send five players to Honolulu this year for the NFL Pro Bowl, all of whom are from the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, Peyton and Marvin will go for the 35th consecutive year and Reggie Wayne, Tarik Glenn and Jeff Saturday will join them. It's not as impressive as last year when the Colts sent Peyton, Marvin, Edge, Tarik, Saturday, Freeney, Cato and Sanders, but nonetheless, five players from the offensive side of the ball is still very impressive, and Colts fans can't honestly expect a couple defensive players to be elected. It's a shame to see Freeney not return to the Pro Bowl after recording only 5.5 sacks so far and not being as dominate as he was last year, but he looked like his usual self vs. the Bengals and if he keeps it up, a slow start might be good for the Colts when Dwight tests free-agency this off-season. If the Colts can somehow figure out a way to get teams to pass the football, Freeney should bring back his dominate pass-rush ability we are used to. Notable NFL players left off of the Pro Bowl Roster are Ray Lewis, Terrell Owens, and Tom Brady (What a shame!)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Especially when you don't exactly have Ronde Barber and Champ Bailey at the cornerback spot (no disrespect to Harper and David, who have been very impressive this year.)

An even scarier thought is matching up a depleted secondary with Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmanzadeh. But leave it to Giordano and Reid to come up with yet another very impressive performance from the safety position. Giordano and Reid had a total of 9 tackles in the game, and Giordano had some big hits in big situations. Don't forget Giordano was also the leading tackler against the Jags last week and also came up with what appeared to be a big interception at the time. (Can we forget that game?) Don't get me wrong, I'm terrified of the thought of possibly starting these two guys in a playoff game, but it's very nice to know that a 5th and 6th string safety can fill in when needed, with Bob Sanders taking all the time he needs to heal his knee.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Dungy's Mistake Leads to Colts Loss

by Eric Conner
Of all the things to be mystified about in the Colts loss to Tennessee (need a list? - brutal run defense..again, Adam Vinatieri not being all that reliable...again, the inability to come up with a way to stop Vince Young's constant scrambles even when you knew it was coming, way too many false start penalties....again, too many dropped passes, that ridiculous goal line offensive formation that simply does not work all come to mind) the one thing I simply cannot understand is why no one is talking about the most blatant miscue of all. You know, the one that belongs to Tony Dungy. Yes, I know everyone loves and respects Tony, but he made an absolutely inexplicable decision that clearly cost the Colts this football game. The Titans realized - rightfully so - that missing a 60 yard field goal with 11 seconds and 1 time out left gave Peyton plenty of time to win this game for the Colts. So, they had no choice....punt and go to overtime. But when the Colts called timeout - most importantly their LAST timeout - that threat completely disappeared because the Colts no longer had enough time to run a play AND stop the clock. The Titans - rightfully so again - recalled their kick team and the rest folks, is history.

I've yet to hear a reasonable explanation of what in the world Tony was thinking, and virtually none of the national coverage of the game has focused on what was a very crucial mistake by the coaching staff. Not that Tony doesn't deserve the respect that he gets, but let's call it what it was...a mistake that cost us the football game!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

He returned for one game, which was the Patriots game, in which he made a huge impact for the defense. The run defense has been struggling this year and the missing piece has been Sanders. Having him back is a huge addition as it could be argued that he is now more valuable to the defense than Dwight Freeney is.

Brandon Stokley has also been out nearly all year with ankle and knee injuries. He returned for about 3 plays in the Texans game, one of which he scored a touchdown on. He then left the game with a knee injury that has kept him out since.

Look for Stokley to fill back in in the slot position Dallas Clark had been filling in at this position for Stokley while he was out and now Clark is hurt. The Colts also have Ricky Proehl to put in on the offense now. I would look for him on a 4 wide receiver formation or possibly switching off with Stokley in the slot. Then again, Stokley will probably get hurt again anyways. ("Knock on wood", Brandon...sorry, I had to)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

I have to say that this is probably the most amazing catch that I have personally seen. Marvin has made some unbelievable ones, but this is my favorite. If anything, it is by far the best one I have seen in the league this year. This was on a crucial third down in a three point game against the Patriots. It's funny to see Marvin spike the ball right in the Patriots' faces. He's never, ever like that. He was pretty worked up. Watch and enjoy...

If the Playoffs Started Today...For the Colts

(OK, I'm just kidding about that one, we've got it this year). CBS has a cool, updated playoff bracket that has the playoff scenarios according to if the season ended today.

As of right now, the Colts would have the #1 spot in the AFC and would get a bye along with the San Diego Chargers. The Colts would play the winner of Denver and Baltimore. I would feel very confident about the Colts going up against either one of those teams. We have owned the Broncos in the playoffs over recent years and have already beat them in Denver this year. As for the Ravens, I'm not too impressed, especially after last nights game. I'd take the Colts offense versus the Ravens defense any day. San Diego would play Kansas City or New England in their second round match-up.

I have a feeling that we would play New England in the AFC Championship game. However, we would have home field advantage this time. We already beat them once in New England this year and I feel that we would take it at home. The only team I'm really scared about is the Chargers because of their 3-4 defense and awesome run game. I think they will fall early though. Or at least I hope...

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
