CBS Likes Strikeforce Demographics, but Will MMA Return?

The early ratings are in for CBS's Saturday night MMA show, and although the numbers aren't as good as the network did last year with Kimbo Slice, CBS executive Kelly Kahl tells FanHouse he's encouraged that CBS improved on its usual Saturday night ratings among the coveted young male demographic.

Now the question is whether MMA will improve to CBS in 2010. Kahl said it's too soon to say about that, but that a significant improvement in the targeted demographic means CBS accomplished its first goal. Kahl noted that MMA on CBS beat college football on ABC in the demographic.

Strikeforce: Let's Hear It for the Losers

All the big stories coming out of Saturday night's big night of fights are about the winners: Fedor Emelianenko showed once again that he's the best in the world, Jake Shields won the Strikeforce middleweight belt, Gegard Mousasi took another step toward elite status and Fabricio Werdum made his case that he should get Fedor next.

But I'd like to take a moment to praise the losers of the four fights.

Jake Shields Beats Jason 'Mayhem' Miller at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Jason "Mayhem" Miller is a great entertainer. He showed in his fight with Jake Shields on Saturday night that he's a pretty good fighter, too -- but not quite good enough to beat Shields in a fight that often felt like a stalemate and left a lot of fans booing Saturday night at Strikeforce, Fedor vs. Rogers.

Miller, as usual, had an entertaining entrance, featuring dancing girls and some dancing of his own. Shields didn't need an escort of entertainers, however, he just strolled into the cage and did his business. He shot immediately for a takedown and got Miller exactly where he wanted him. Amazingly, when Shields got to full mount, Miller was able to stand back up without taking much damage.

Fabricio Werdum Beats Antonio Silva at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill -- In a good way to start the return of MMA to network television, Fabricio Werdum beat Antonio Silva by unanimous decision Saturday night at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers.

Silva floored Werdum in the early going and appeared close to finishing him on the ground, but Werdum stayed poised and managed to get back onto his feet. Midway through the first round Silva threw Werdum onto his back, but when Werdum stayed there, Silva wanted none of it and took the fight back to his feet. It went that way for much of the round, with Silva controlling it but always careful not to get caught in one of Werdum's submissions. The first round was exciting and left the crowd giving the fighters a standing ovation.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Strikeforce has its next female MMA star: Marloes Coenen.

Coenen, a 145-pound submission whiz from the Netherlands, needed just 65 seconds to get Roxanne Modaferri to tap with an arm bar Saturday night on the undercard of the Fedor vs. Rogers show, and in that 65 seconds she showed everything a star needs: Presence, poise and the ability to dominate an opponent in the cage. It doesn't hurt that Coenen is a beautiful woman, but that's just an added bonus. The important part is that she can fight.

Michihiro Omigawa Beats Hatsu Hioki in Bad Decision at Sengoku 11

In a big upset and a bad decision, Michihiro Omigawa defeated Hatsu Hioki by split decision Saturday at Sengoku 11 in Tokyo.

Hioki clearly controlled the pace of the fight, especially in the first and second round. Omigawa wouldn't quit and had his best round in the third, but it's very surprising that two of the three judges awarded him the fight.

Mamed Khalidov TKOs Jorge Santiago in Sengoku Upset

In a major MMA upset, Mamed Khalidov defeated Jorge Santiago by first-round TKO Saturday at Sengoku 11.

The Polish Khalidov came out aggressively, trying and missing a spinning back kick in the early going before Santiago took him down. On the ground, Khalidov stunned Santiago with a punch to the jaw, and as soon as he smelled blood he pounced, unleashing a series of hard strikes to the head that had Santiago dazed and hurting. The referee stepped in and stopped it at the 2:45 mark of the first round.

Shane del Rosario Submits Brandon Cash, Stays Undefeated

Shane del Rosario improved to 9-0 with a first-round submission win over Brandon Cash Friday night at the Strikeforce Challengers Series card in Fresno, and that's not a big surprise, as del Rosario has had nothing but quick wins in his MMA career.

But it was a surprise that Cash actually had del Rosario in big trouble early in the fight: Cash dropped del Rosario with a hard right cross just seconds into the bout, and for a moment it looked like the referee was going to stop the fight. And even after del Rosario recovered, Cash was in the dominant position on the ground, had del Rosario mounted, and looked like he should have been able to finish him.

Luke Rockhold Beats Jesse Taylor at Strikeforce Challengers

Jesse Taylor, the former Ultimate Fighter cast member who was kicked off the show for misbehavior and dropped by the UFC after a loss in the Octagon, suffered another setback in losing to Luke Rockhold on a Strikeforce Challengers Series card in Fresno Friday night.

Taylor, a former wrestler, immediately shot for a takedown and kept working for it until he finally got Rockhold on his back a little over a minute into the first round. But going to the ground turned out to be a mistake: Rockhold showed superior Brazilian jiu jitsu skills, getting Taylor's back, controlling him with a body triangle, and making him tap with a rear-naked choke.

Cung Le Back for Strikeforce Dec. 19

Cung Le hasn't fought since winning the Strikeforce middleweight title more than a year and a half ago, but he's finally planning to get back into the Strikeforce cage on Dec. 19.

FanHouse's Ariel Helwani learned from a source close to the situation that Le has agreed to fight on the Dec. 19 card, which is being referred to as Strikeforce: Evolution. The card will take place in San Jose and air on Showtime.

Le, who has a professional MMA record of 6-0, has been focusing on acting instead of fighting over the last year and a half, and there's been talk that he might be done with fighting completely. But now he's finally read to return to the cage.

Scott Smith Ready to Fight as Soon as He Gets an Opponent

CHICAGO -- Scott Smith is ready to fight for Strikeforce in December. Now he just needs an opponent.

Smith is hanging out here in Chicago this week to talk to fans and reporters and help spread the word about Saturday night's CBS show. He's also gearing up to fight on December 19, but he says Strikeforce hasn't yet had time to find him the right opponent.

"I think they're a little bit overwhelmed," Smith said of Strikeforce. "This show on Saturday night on CBS is such a big deal for them that they haven't really had a chance to put together everything on the next show. But they're planning a really stacked event in December and I'm excited that I'm going to be on it."
