by Pete Holiday
Tuberville had it coming. Okay, okay, that might be overstating the issue a little bit. Like so many other situations, however, the surface-level analysis isn't quite as convincing when you take a closer look at it.

To be certain, there is going to be absolutely no shortage of commentary in the coming days excoriating Auburn for firing a guy for one bad season. In fact, that's already started.

The problem, of course, is that when considering how to proceed, an athletic department is looking at the future. Past accomplishments are only relevant in as much as they are indicative of future success, and there's certainly an argument to be made that Tommy Tuberville's future at Auburn was not all that bright.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by Pete Holiday
After rampant speculation, initially that Tuberville would be retained and then that his departure was imminent, the Birmingham News is reporting this evening that Tuberville is out at Auburn. Nothing is certain until there's been an announcement (especially when we're talking about the Birmingham News) but this is about as close to a sure thing as it gets in internet rumor-land.

Much will be made of the timing and circumstances, but there are a few things we know for sure. A few of the bigger openings (Tennessee and Clemson) have already been filled while a number of the big names this coaching season are still on the table. We also know that Tuberville has had a rocky relationship with certain Auburn boosters and you can bet that they were crowing for Tuberville to be fired starting sometime in the third quarter of Saturday's Iron Bowl.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Many of them sounded plausible. Tommy Tuberville admitted that the block was illegal and said that he didn't tolerate those sorts of things. Of course, as noted here, he "didn't tolerate" it by doing absolutely nothing to Ziemba.

It seems that <strike>Ziemba</strike> the team learned a valuable lesson: that dirty blocks are fine by Tuberville. Last night, after the Tide had the game well in hand, <strike>Ziemba</strike> an as yet unidentified lineman decided to take out a little of his frustration on an Alabama defensive lineman -- by diving at his knee . . . from behind.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

It sets you up to look like a moron and it provides good bulletin board material for your opponents. Apparently Auburn running back Brad Lester didn't get the memo. On the Tigers' two remaining games, Lester thinks his team not only should win... but will also put up "a good number of points":

"It's a disappointing season, but we feel like we can make up for our season by winning these last two," Lester said. "If we win these last two games, it won't be as bad."

And Lester wasn't lacking confidence. The Tigers, he said, should win both games.

"I have no doubt in my mind," Lester said. "We should beat both teams by a good amount of points. I feel real good about it."

Now, I'm not sure if Lester has been watching the same Auburn team that the rest of us have, but at this point promising even one win in the next two games would be gutsy. But to suggest that they'll win both? And by "a good number of points"? Insanity.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

It's impossible to make it out of the SEC undefeated, and Alabama's not good enough to do it in any event, therefore it is a foregone conclusion that the Tide will lose a game.

Every week we hear it on talk radio, see it from the talking heads on TV, and read it on the blogs. The Tide just can't go undefeated. Impossible.

If you're betting, that's probably smart money. Minor detail: nobody on Saban's squad cares that you don't think they can win.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

That leaves the hottest seat in the country the one directly below Tommy Tuberville's rear end. The question the Auburn trustees certainly must be asking themselves is this: are they going to be at a competitive disadvantage if they wait until the end of the year to fire Tuberville?

The answer is a resounding "yes".

Of course, it's not a guarantee that Coach Tuberville will find himself looking for work come December, but if he is, Auburn will find themselves more than a month behind in their coaching search, and with some heavy competition.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Never once did I get to stay home from school because of a football game.

But, in three counties in Georgia, school is closed today because so many teachers took off and not enough substitutes could be found to replace them.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Clarke, Madison, and Oglethorpe counties are all closed today:

Last year 137 teachers called in saying they wouldn't be in class and the [Clarke County School District] was able to find only 113 substitute teachers.

Administrators studied the absences and found that almost twice as many teachers called in the Friday before the game - played 360 miles away in Jacksonville, Fla. - than on an average school day.

Kids these days have it so easy!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Likely, an announcement won't be made until after the Kentucky game.

Also, the source has confirmed to me that several assistants from the old guard will not be retained, though the names were not divulged. The remaining coaches' futures will be determined at a later date. The source would not go further into detail.

As with any report of this type, care must be taken before jumping to any conclusions, but in the world of rumors, this one is not that far out there.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

There are teams with relatively unobstructed paths to Atlanta, while others will need an awful lot of help. We're going to run them all down so you don't sound like a moron around the water cooler on Monday. We already covered the path of least (and greatest) resistance in the SEC East race.

A refresher on the SEC tie-breakers can be found at the SEC East entry, but the basic gist is this: head-to-head will decide two-way ties. Collective head-to-head will decide multiple way ties, if possible. Otherwise it moves to divisional records and on down the list.

So how are things looking for teams in the SEC West?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by Pete Holiday
Filed under: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, SEC
Most teams are just over halfway through their conference slate and the SEC conference championship picture is starting to take shape. There are teams with relatively unobstructed paths to Atlanta, while others will need an awful lot of help. We're going to run them all down so you don't sound like a moron around the water cooler on Monday. We'll start with the East. Look for the same treatment for the more interesting West later today (Road To Atlanta: Who Can Win the SEC West?).

With virtually every team sitting on at least one conference loss, it becomes important to understand how the SEC breaks ties (this link also covers basketball, so some of it is more complicated than necessary for football) within the division. This can get complicated in a hurry, but the basic gist is this: in the case of a two-team tie, the head-to-head winner gets it. In the case of a 3+ team tie, CBS and ESPN get to pick.

Just kidding. In the case of a multi-tie, the combined head to head record is looked at first. If all of the teams ended up at 1-1 against the other two, they next look at the divisional record. There are more steps, but once the multi-way tie has been broken, it reverts to the head-to-head match up. Okay, now on with the fun stuff:

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Those who had already started chugging the Crimson Kool-Aid (now on backorder) told you that you were just scared.

In retrospect, those die-hards are looking awfully sage. The Times covers, quite thoroughly, all the ways in which Alabama's investment in Saban has paid huge dividends.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

In 2004 the Tigers were undefeated and made a case for being included in the national title game. Despite all that, the primary thing on the lips of Auburn fans over the last two or three seasons has been their Iron Bowl streak against Alabama, now sitting at six.

It's not the only thing Tiger fans care about but, when it comes right down to it, the most important thing in their world isn't winning conference or national titles... it's beating Alabama.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Auburn faithful are upset, and rightfully so, at the Tigers' sputtering, inept offense, but was Franklin really the problem?

It wasn't long ago that the spread was thought to be a talent equalizer. You could compete against superior talent by using "scheme" to neutralize your opponents talented players. Could Franklin have been hired to try to shore up the fact that Tuberville is falling farther and farther behind on the recruiting trail?

The problem, though, is that scapegoating Franklin right now isn't even a good idea.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by Pete Holiday
Apparently the Tennessee running back is fluent in pterodactyl.

Practice had just ended last week. The Tennessee starting tailback, a senior on the verge of becoming UT's all-time leading rusher, was requested for media interviews.

He had a demand: whoever interviewed him had to speak Pterodactyl, some made-up dinosaur language. No interview was conducted.

Some things simply cannot be made up.

With the way the season has started, however, one has to wonder if now is the best time for cute games. Fulmer is, by some estimates, sitting on one of the hottest seats in the country, and the Vols are facing a very real possibility of missing a bowl game if they don't get things under control.

Tennessee barely escaped formidable MAC opponent Northern Illinois this past weekend and they travel to Athens to face Georgia, whose last game was a humbling experience at the hands of a resurgent Alabama team. Things could get ugly, and quick, for the Vols.

Then again, with the outlook as bleak as it is for the Vols, maybe now is the perfect time for a little levity. Veeeek veeeeeek, Mr. Foster.

(Hat tip: Rocky Top Talk)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

If you weren't careful with last week's recommendation you might still be drunk, so I'm going to take it easy on y'all this week. Now, I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to come up with this, but I haven't seen it anywhere else, so there was a bit of trial and error involved.

So the concept is this: take four foods no good tailgate is without, mash them together. Enjoy. Jalepenos, sausage, bacon, and cream cheese... all wrapped up in a nice little package. Continue on for more...

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

GameDay Headed to Vandy. Wait, What?

by Pete Holiday
For the first time in the history of ESPN's College GameDay, Lee, Kirk, and Corso will be in Nashville for a Vanderbilt game. GameDay. Vanderbilt.

I'll give you a moment to absorb that.

The most bizarre thing about this call is that there really isn't much else out there this weekend. Oregon State at Utah is on Thursday night, the #1 Sooners have Baylor, and Texas is at Colorado (the Buffs just suffered a loss to Florida State).

Kentucky at Alabama could be a better game, but the Tide have already been feature teams on GameDay twice this season. #9 USC has a ranked Oregon coming to L.A. and #14 Ohio State is visiting #18 Wisconsin, but USC and Wisconsin just lost to weak conference opponents.

This is really the most logical decision, which is absolutely mind-blowing. The Commodores are 4-0, lead the SEC East, and unless Tony Franklin can get Auburn's offense going, they have a very real chance of sending the Tigers back to the Plains with a loss.

The question that should be on the minds of Auburn faithful this week: will the 'Dores give away enough points for Auburn to escape with a win?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

While Knowshon was trying on his new black jersey, the 'Bama defense was watching film. In Athens on Saturday, it was pretty clear that the only thing that had been blacked out was UGA's offense.

Alabama jumped out to a 31-0 point half-time lead. While Georgia put a dent in that lead in the fourth quarter, the outcome was all but certain by then.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Tailgate Central had a couple of bye weeks while I moved cross-country, but it's back and we're dispensing with the whole "food" thing and focusing on a fascinating (and relatively new) invention: Firefly sweet-tea-flavored vodka. Some weeks ago my friend Charlsie mentioned this stuff to me. I was instantly intrigued. It combines two of my favorite things: sweet tea and <s>getting toasted</s> a nice, relaxing drink.

The basics: Firefly Vodka is an actual, honest-to-goodness, 70 Proof liquor (they have a Muscadine-flavored version that's actually 80 proof). I bought a bottle with my own hard-earned dollars (unfortunately, no favors from the folks at Firefly) and -- in the name of science -- I've made myself a number of drinks with it. Do you see the kind of mess I endure for you all? Recipes and review below the fold.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
