He famously complained that there were too many mid-majors in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. That was the year that George Mason upset Michigan State, North Carolina and UConn to get to the Final Four.

This will be the first Packer-less tournament in decades as he retired after last year's Final Four. It's a shame for him because he would have loved the makeup of the brackets this time around. Going against the recent trends, it looks as if the major conferences will get most of the at-large bids, leaving the mid-majors out in the cold.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Mohamed Jiddou claimed that Kennedy punched him while shouting racial slurs in front of a local bar. Kennedy denies all of this and has filed a defamation suit against Jiddou and a valet who said he witnessed the assault. In their first conference game of the season, the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels were beaten by unranked Boston College, 85-78.

How the Eagles did it was pretty simple: BC was on fire from behind the arc and clamped down on the Heels defensively. The Eagles also fought on the offensive glass and kept UNC from getting into its deadly transition game. That fact caused the normally poised Tar Heels to take frustration shots and make frustration fouls, which fed the deficit.

This was the first time all season that the Tar Heels have been truly tested. In every other game, they went on huge runs to create distance from their opponents. Of course, those runs are fueled by creating turnovers and getting out on the break and Boston College simply wasn't allowing that. BC kept the Tar Heels in check with a 17-7 run in the middle of the second half and Carolina just couldn't complete the comeback.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

You have top-ranked North Carolina just rolling over everyone and flexing their muscle. Duke has looked very impressive for most of the year. Wake Forest and Clemson are still undefeated and climbing the polls.

Still, there have been some bad moments. Miami hasn't looked as good as advertised, Maryland followed up one impressive win by getting blown out twice. Virginia Tech has lost on two buzzer beaters. Then there is the glut of also-rans that litter the bottom half of the league.

Conference season doesn't get into full swing for another week or so and there has already been two league games played. There are some big non-conference game this week (Ga Tech at Alabama, Xavier at Virginia, NC State at Florida, Wake Forest at BYU) but the highlight will be the ACC's top two teams starting conference play.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Apparently his son can do the same.

Pat Knight, who replaced his dad at Texas Tech, used a 12-year-old boy to help make a point to his basketball team.

Texas Tech was struggling to make layups against Stephen F. Austin to other night. So during a timeout, Knight looked in the crowd and welcomed a 12-year-old fan to join his team's huddle.
Knight asked the boy whether he could make layups. The boy said he could.

"I was just tired of having 18- or 21-year-olds miss layups that a 12-year-old could hit, so I brought a 12-year-old in to let them know that he could hit layups," Knight said. "He's 12 and he can hit layups, so why can't you when you're 18 to 21?"
The tactic seemed to work. Tech would start hitting their layups and pulled out a 69-55 win over SFA.

No word on if Kentucky's Billy Gillispie has offered the young man a scholarship.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

For the fourth time in this young season, the No. 4 ranked team has been beaten by a non-ranked team.

First it was No. 4 UCLA losing to Michigan. Then Michigan popped No. 4 Duke. Two weeks ago, No. 4 Gonzaga lost to Arizona. Now it is No. 4 Oklahoma losing to Arkansas, 96-88.

This game wasn't that close. The Razorbacks never trailed and once had a 25-point lead over the Sooners. Oklahoma would then go on a 16-0 run to close the gap but ran out of gas.

For the first time this season, there will seemingly be some major happenings at the top of the rankings. No. 2 UConn lost to Georgetown last night and now this Oklahoma loss. No. 9 Purdue was beaten at home by Illinois tonight as well.

By the way, No. 3 Pittsburgh visits No. 11 Georgetown on Saturday.

This curse looks bad to either Duke or Wake Forest -- the most likely heirs to the No. 4 ranking.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Is it No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 UConn or No. 3 Pittsburgh? I'll wait a week and ask the Rutgers Scarlet Knights since they will play all three ... this week.

Rutgers lost to North Carolina today, 97-75. On Wednesday, they will host Pitt to open their Big East schedule. Then on Saturday they will visit UConn to face the Huskies. The top three ranked teams in the nation in a span of seven days. Yikes!

That certainly isn't Delaware State, Bryant University or N.J.I.T -- the Knights last three opponents. N.J.I.T hasn't won a game in two years. UNC, UConn and Pitt are a combined 35-0.

It is believed that this is the first time in history that one team will play the Associated Press' top three ranked teams in a row. In 1995, the Temple Owls faced the top three ranked teams in a one-month span.

It will get easier after this week, but not by much. Rutgers will welcome in Marquette and No. 17 Syracuse, travel to Cincinnati and then host No. 19 Louisville.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The problem is that the NCAA's "Christmas dead period" for recruiting ended Friday night. That means Collins wasn't allowed to be in attendance and violated recruiting rules.
When schools become aware of violations, they typically notify the NCAA and propose self-imposed sanctions. The NCAA often classifies inadvertent violations as "secondary" rather than "major," and then imposes sanctions, but it's never clear how the NCAA will rule until it issues its judgment.
Most likely Duke would only suffer a penalty on the number of recruiting trips, contacts or evaluations. That could be for the entire coaching staff and/or Collins, individually.

The game Collins attended was between Ravenscroft Apex and Word Of God-Rocky Mount. Ryan Kelly, who has already committed to Duke, plays for Ravenscroft. John Wall, the top uncommitted lead guard in the country, plays for Word of God.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

They began the season 9-0 with impressive wins over Miami, Notre Dame and Butler. Their nice start vaulted the Buckeyes to the No. 13 ranking in the Coaches' Poll and among the Big Ten's elite.

It's hard to use the word "elite" when you get beat at home by 28 points to West Virginia. Yeah, the Mountaineers went into Columbus and pounded Ohio State, 76-48. Counting their N.I.T. championship last year, the Buckeyes had won 14 straight games heading into the day.

West Virginia used a late 35-9 to turn the game into a laugher. Ohio State was pitiful with just 31% shooting from the field and missing nine of their ten free throws.

The game was sweet for West Virginia's Bob Huggins. When Huggs was at Cincinnati, Ohio State refused to play them despite a push to make something happen. Huggs also tried and failed twice to get the head job at Ohio State.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

In the original assault claim, there was talk of a drunk Kennedy assaulting a cab driver and spitting out racial taunts like "bin Laden."

The suit is against that cab driver who went on local news stations telling his side of the story and Michael Strother, a valet who also went on the local news and said he witnessed Kennedy's alleged conduct.

There are all kinds of conflicting reports since then but Kennedy believes that the damage has already been done.
Kennedy's attorney, Richard Katz, said Friday that the statements made by Mohamed Moctar Ould Jiddou and Strother might do permanent damage to Kennedy's coaching career, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He also alleged their statements to police and the media have not been consistent.

"As an athlete or a coach, if you're in this business and something happens, whether you're innocent or guilty, it's with you for the rest of your career," Katz said, according to the report. "We don't want this to happen. We want this to be over and then throw the baggage in the river."
Again, this is a mess that has three sides: Kennedy's, the cab driver's and the absolute truth. Hopefully we can find out the final side.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Pitino won the 1996 title for Kentucky; Smith won in 1998. Both would abruptly leave for "greener pastures."

In a shocker, Tubby's Gophers controlled the game and got a huge 70-64 victory. Minnesota is now 11-0 -- their best start since 1976-1977. Still, heading into Saturday there wasn't much respect for what the Gophers have done. Their best win up to this point was over Cornell. Now they have a signature victory to point to.

To be fair, Louisville looked dead. They played late Thursday night against Ole Miss in Cincinnati and then had to hurry onto a flight to Arizona. When they got in early Friday morning, they were stuck at the airport because their buses hadn't arrived.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

They came into the game with a No. 7 ranking and a big win over Memphis in their rear view mirror.

Duke came in ranked No. 6 and provided a nice challenge to show Xavier how good they are right now. Judging by what happened, the Muskies have some work to do.

Duke jumped all over Xavier early and cruised to an 82-64 victory. The Blue Devils rolled out to a 20-3 lead just five minutes into the game, expanded the lead to 31 points at halftime and never looked back. It was just a perfect storm of the Blue Devils playing very, very well at the exact same time the Musketeers were playing very, very badly.

This was Duke's 18th win in 19 tries at the Izod Center. Of Mike Krzyzewski's ten Final Four appearances, five of the trips went through East Rutherford. Yawn. I mean, I like the Rose, Orange, and Sugar Bowls, etc., but I could care less about the EagleBank, New Mexico, Magic Jack or Las Vegas Bowls.

Fellow FanHouse-r Brian Gummell says the bowl games are worth watching. I'm sure the families of the players, the schools involved and gamblers will check it out but I'm not scheduling my day around any of it.

While you football guys are watching "The Ocho" for those games featuring second-tier schools playing in half-empty stadiums, I'll be enjoying one of the best weekends that college basketball can offer during the regular season.

Give me UConn-Gonzaga, Xavier-Duke, Michigan State-Texas, Davidson-Purdue and Syracuse-Memphis. All those hoops games will be grabbing my attention Saturday. I mean, UConn and Gonzaga are both ranked in the top four; Xavier and Duke will face off in the New Jersey; and little Davidson gets another chance to knock down a Goliath.

That's why I love college basketball. We get better games all year long. College football goes with that "every game counts" crap (which is a falsehood because Boise State's undefeated season doesn't seem to count for much), so schools rarely schedule intersection games between powers. UConn is going all the way to Seattle to face Gonzaga so it will be battle tested for the Big East season and the NCAA Tournament. The key in college football is to schedule teams you can beat to set you up for a chance to play for something important.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Just the names of the players that have come through Chapel Hill are amazing. Michael Jordan. James Worthy. Sam Perkins. Billy Cunningham. Phil Ford. Antawn Jamison. Walter Davis. The list goes on.

By the end of the night, none of them will have scored as many points for the Tar Heels than Tyler Hansbrough. Psycho T is just nine points away from passing Ford and become the all-time leading scorer in UNC history. The Tar Heels host Evansville tonight.

When records fall, there are two stories to follow. One is the greatness of the player who is toppling the record. We all know about Hansbrough and what he has meant to the Carolina program. But the second story is about the record itself and who held it.

It is amazing that Ford has kept this record since graduating in 1978. Again, guys like Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Jamison, Vince Carter and more have came and went since Ford. Sure, most of the best scorers since 1978 have left early for NBA riches (I think that Joseph Forte would have owned the record if he hadn't left after his sophomore season) but that shouldn't diminish the record.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The win was the first over a top-five team since 2001. Jordan Hill scored 22 points and Nic Wise added 21 in the 69-64 win.

How amazing is it that Arizona, a former perennial power, was the school in this game that needed a defining win over a big-time program? And how amazing is it that Gonzaga has become a legitimate big-time program? The Zags have already beaten Tennessee and Maryland and will face off against No. 2 UConn in Seattle on Saturday.

This is the third time the No. 4 ranked team has been upset by a former powerhouse turned unranked team this season. Michigan beat then-No. 4 UCLA in the 2k Sports tournament. A few weeks later, Michigan would upset then-No. 4 Duke.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

He was at practice," said Jackson, Duke's associate athletics director of communications.

Jackson said the accident "was nothing serious." Jackson said Krzyzewski was not injured.
That's great news that he okay and that it wasn't serious. The thing is that Durham police have no record of any accident involving Coach K on Friday.

Of course, Duke haters are all over this. NC State blog StateFansNation said: "Police have charged the tree that Krzyzewski hit with a flagrant blocking foul and awarded Duke with two shots and the ball."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
