That went to Kevin James for his engine command. Seriously. The best ever. He even edged out Matthew McConaughey in my book.

Congrats to all Stewies winners! A complete list of awards and winners follows.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

But the bore, snore, roar ... however you wanna look at it ... of NASCAR's 2007 season finale lives on in the Fanhouse Ford 500 Live Blog which was initially viewed by 299 readers and has been replayed 412 times. Trust me when I tell you ... it wasn't that interesting ... kind of like the race. But it was A LOT of fun and there have been a lot of requests to bring back reader-interactive live blogging in the Fanhouse next season. Count on it.

Thought for the day: Matt Kenseth is the new Greg Biffle

If a driver wins at Homestead-Miami does anyone remember? How about if they finish the season in the top 5. Is it is just me, or is Matt Kenseth the best, most-ignored driver in NASCAR? I know I'm guilty of it.

The #17 DeWalt team deserves a huge round of applause. Kenseth's 4th place finish is his sixth consecutive top 10 in his eight Nextel Cup seasons. Things could be different for Kenseth next year with a new crew chief, but at least Robby Reiser's not going far. Can Keseth continue the streak next season? I do believe he can.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The two and a half month NASCAR off season. I shall attempt to chronicle my own journey--that of fan and blogger--through the 91-day long NASCAR Nextel Sprint Cup points race drought here in the Fanhouse.

First day state of mind:
Denial and Relief

It's finally over. The end of the anti-climatic 2007 NASCAR season couldn't come soon enough for Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans. The problems with DEI have been lingering since before the season even began and finally we are done with it. Done with Teresa, done with consistent equipment failure and on with the business of getting razzed by the rest of NASCAR Nation until Junior proves it wasn't his driving skills by winning a race for Hendrick Motorsports.

Is it too much to hope for that win to come at Daytona?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

I will remember it most as the year Dale Earnhardt Jr. left the company his father started, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus dominated and the season droned on in the car of tomorrow.

Here are the Top 35 things I will remember most about the 2007 NASCAR Season, in (mostly) chronological order:

1. AOL Sports welcomed NASCAR into the Fanhouse

2. Mark Martin didn't win the Daytona 500

3. Michael Waltrip Racing's Intake Gate

4. Washington State dissed NASCAR fans

5. Juan Pablo Montoya won in Mexico

6. Car of Tomorrow debuted at Bristol

7. Team Red Bull mechanic Jimmy Sprinkle murdered

8. The Virginia Tech Tragedy

9. Kevin James' Engine Command

I can't remember the last year that I was so uninspired by NASCAR's finale race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. I know I'm not alone ... so I thought we could chat about it while we sort of half watching the race today. We can discuss all the ways in which the 2007 NASCAR season and its media coverage sucked and yet ... we've already begun counting down the days 'til we can start it all over again in February.

Want to join us? Meet back here in about an hour for pre-race!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

After several rounds of knocking out the competition from other sports for the Hottest Sports Wife / Girlfriend, NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon's wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, is facing a match up with another NASCAR WAG--the one considered the hottest by the drivers themselves: Athena Barber, girlfriend of Clint Bowyer.

She's not just popular with the guys, either. She's so adored by NASCAR WAG fans that Bowyer is sometimes referred to as "Athena's boyfriend." There is no shortage of compliments for the girlfriend--from praise for showing constant support for her man to the way she dresses, down to the shoes and accessories. But perhaps her best asset is her genuine smile that accompanies almost every one of her casually sexy, but never overdone outfits--unless you count heels at the racetrack over doing it, which I don't. I must say, the top in this pic isn't one of my favs ... see better examples here.

What say you, NASCAR fans? From a Fanhouse reader:
Could we please get Brad D. off of the air, he is horrible, now I could care less what color you are, you could be purple for all I care, but he is horrible and ruins NASCAR for me.
He is horrible indeed. But I needn't go on about it ... you already know. If not, please feel free to peruse more previous comments or better yet, watch the race on Sunday.

Daugherty's less than stellar performance certainly begs the question: Was he given his gig as an ESPN Analyst (and I use the term loosely) because he was a "former winning NASCAR owner?" Because he was better than all the other candidates for the job? Or because he is a person of color?

Now, I happen to be a fan of diversity ... but I'm no fan of affirmative action. It's a form of racism that many people in this country support or have come to accept, but I can't really get behind the idea of favoring any particular race over another for any reason.

I mean, who among us could believe that the former NBA baller was simply the best candidate for the job at the time he got hired? Especially considering they've still got Allen Bestwick, who knows more than a thing or two about NASCAR and is not at all injurious to fans, stuck in the pits most of the time.

Bring on Speedweeks.

Previously on Fanhouse
<a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/2007/11/03/why-are-nascar-ratings-down-you-decide/" title="View Why Are NASCAR Ratings Down?
I think Best Buy is about to get a lot more out of their sponsorship of NASCAR than they've been used to with the CNC Haas Racing #66 Chevy driven by Jeff Green. North America's #1 consumer electronics retailer has taken their business to Gillett Evernham Motorsports to sponsor Elliott Sadler for 15 Sprint Cup races in 2008.

Sadler is certainly considered to be one of the most likeable, personable characters on the NASCAR circuit. Now his face will be all over Best Buy promoting products he loves. Their marketing department must be in heaven. So is he:
"Best Buy is a brand I've believed in and supported for years, so to represent them is honestly a dream come true. I love all kinds of music and movies, and I've always been a 'gadget guy.' My house, car, boat and even my motor home are all tricked out with stereos, speakers, gaming systems, GPS, flat screens, DVD players, you name it. The employees at the Mooresville (N.C.) Best Buy store already know me by name, but they'll be seeing even more of me now."
I imagine Best Buy will be seeing even more brand loyalty from NASCAR fans. Especially if this video is any indication of the kind of entertaining commercials the Best Buy Sadler sponsorship has in store for us.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Check.

Hotter than a Playboy Cyber Girl? Check.

Hotter than a 25-year-old actress? In progress.

Ingrid's latest challenger, "One Tree Hill" actress Sophia Bush, current female companion of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, is currently lagging in the poll with only 38% of the votes to Ingrid's 62%.

Fantastic. But much like watching the same drivers lead the points race week in and week out, waiting for Ingrid to crush the competition time and time again is getting a tad boring.

Do we to shake things up a bit? According to FoxSports Lee Spencer, Dale Earnhardt Inc. announced major organizational moves designed to place greater emphasis on engineering and technology.
"We're taking the necessary steps now in order to go out and win a championship in 2008."
Oh, now they want to take the necessary steps. Now that the rising star of the family-owned business--my bad, I mean stars--have left the building.

DEI Vice President of Global Operations, Max Siegel:
"We've been working on the plan for a long time. We're putting a huge emphasis on engineering. If all of this doesn't speak to our commitment to motorsports, I don't know what will."
Well loddy-freaking-dah. You couldn't have started this, I don't know, LAST YEAR?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. supposedly isn't bitter:
After two more races, the team will sever official ties with the 33-year-old who once stood first in its line of succession. There aren't many lingering feelings of bitterness or betrayal - just a difference of opinion on how to do business.
Well, I'm bitter. And I've been left to wonder, "What if ...?," for a long time to come.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What a wild finish.

I only caught the last 17 or so laps--when I tuned in championship battlers Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday were running 7th and 8th with only three points separating them in the standings. I almost kept the remote moving ... nothing to see here. But I know better than that.

With four laps to go, Hornaday and Skinner were leading the field on a restart--rookie Chad McCumbee put the moves on both veteran drivers passing them three wide on the low side. Chaos ensued. McCumbee led the next restart and, with a two-lap green / white checker finish, appeared on track to collect his first series win.

McCumbee spun his tires on the restart, though, collecting Jack Sprague and making way for Ted Musgrave to score his first win since his 2005 championship season.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

My home state of Iowa race car driver Michael Annett got a NASCAR development deal. "Hey we're movin' on up!" Go Iowa!

Sigh. He signed with Bill Davis Racing. I would have much preferred, oh, I don't know ... Joe Gibbs Racing or Roush Fenway. Actually, maybe JR Motorsports.

Don't get me wrong, despite all the picking I do on Dave Blaney, I still think BDR is one of the better racing organizations, run by some fine people. I just don't think they're at the top of their game right now, except in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in which Mike Skinner is battling Kevin Harvick Inc.'s Ron Hornaday for the 2007 championship title.

Speaking of trucks, the BDR truck team is faring much better than Davis' other trucking venture, Bill Davis Trucking, which has been forced to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection due to an injury lawsuit. But that's neither here nor there ... Davis says BDR will not be affected, which seems evident with the recent additions to the driver roster.

Annett made his ARCA / Remax debut at Iowa Speedway in June claiming the pole and a third place finish. Most recently, he added winner of the ARCA / Remax 250 at Talladega Superspeedway to his growing list of racing credits.

Booyah! Welcome to the family!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Is it wrong that we keep picking on Rusty Wallace, Brad and Suzie, et. al. on ESPN? Heck no! They're the ones who've got the rights to the NASCAR action at the moment and the ones we have to put up with right now. It just so happens they also suck the most.

What did we learn during ESPN's Atlanta broadcast? Rusty can't say Truex. Not like it's hard ... Sounds like: TRUE-EX. Not like: TUR-EX or TRUR-EX or whatever it was he was saying--I can't even replicate the sound.

Oh, we also learned that Teresa Earnhardt isn't dead. Thanks for the tip. Only three more races to go, race fans. Three more. Maybe by mid-season next year we'll have something good to talk about.

Ok ... so maybe ESPN is the worst ... or maybe they're just the worst right now because that's what we're dealing with. They all have their moments of less-than-stellar commentary--even Speed, as highlighted by Michael Waltrip in the above video.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Yeah ... failing to air the race in the second largest market in the country will have that effect.

When your race broadcast gets preempted for local coverage and the network hasn't ensured that local affiliate has a backup plan or backup station to move the breaking news coverage, you get fewer eyeballs watching the race.

On the other hand, the Craftsman Truck Series Martinsville race enjoyed an 18% increase in viewership on The Speed Channel--you might be familiar with the network where more than one of their commentators actually know a thing or two about NASCAR.

Get a clue, NASCAR! It's time to kick ESPN/ABC to the curb and partner with Fox and Fox-owned Speed TV for the entire season.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

by tallglassofmilk
Filed under: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dale Earnhardt Inc., Nextel Cup

What do you suppose DEI pulled out of the Garage Mahal and put under Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s hood this weekend?

Will he get an engine that lays all it's cylinders on the track up front and craps out before the halfway mark like in Fontana? Or will he get a teaser that takes him all the way to the end providing hope of a top 5 finish only to give up on the last lap like last weekend in Martinsville?

It's quite laughable that the #8 car was labeled still running in the Subway 500 results, but I guess that's accurate--it did, after all, sprint backwards from the fourth position to a 23rd place finish. But if the race had been even one lap longer, this would have been his eighth DNF of the season--seven due to engine failures.

Is it enough for conspiracy theories? Depends on who you ask. It's sure enough for Dale Jr. fans--and any other NASCAR fan whose got brain enough to recognize his talent and ability to put the car at the front of the pack.

Whatever it is they got him running in Atlanta was good enough for a top 5 start. But will it be good enough for a top 5 finish?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Is NASCAR's Carl Edwards' clean cut, nice guy behavior all a front? That's what his Roush Fenway teammate Matt Kenseth says:
"I thought it was good in a way that the cameras were there because a lot of us see that, and nobody else does because he kind of puts on a different front.

"His behavior has been real erratic lately, honestly. You don't know what to expect with him. That's the thing that's a little bit troublesome. One minute, he has so much respect for you, and he's real friendly and everything's so much fun. The next minute he wants to kick your butt and he's swearing at you. It's a little scary. You never know what you're going to get."
I'm not sure Kenseth is unbiased in his opinion, but I must say, Edwards' post-race behavior in Martinsville speaks for itself. Kenseth's comments immediately got the attention of a reader who emailed me asking:
"Now I know Carl takes good care of his body telling from the pics on the cover of whatever mag he was on. Maybe this is coming from me being a nurse and hearing about it a lot, but do you think Carl suffers from roid rage from using steroids? I am not sure if NASCAR tests for them or not.

"I hope you don't consider me a nut case, but that is the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the altercation."
Carl Edwards on steroids? I hadn't considered it, but I'd hardly say it's nuts for the thought to cross someone's mind. I do wonder if it's crossed NASCAR's.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

If so, DirecTV wants to hear about it.

The satellite TV company is sponsoring a contest put together by my fellow NASCAR blogger, CCR @ The Black Flag Blog. The Black Flag NASCAR Hotpass Moment Contest affords fans the opportunity to submit an entry of 250 words or less on the following topic:

"The moment when ESPN/ABC made me wish I had DirecTV's NASCAR HotPass was when..."

Each entry will be judged for humor, writing and creativity and the winners win stuff.

Do I even remember my first one? There have been so many moments! Maybe this was it. No matter. Unfortunately, I won't be able to submit my own because ... I will be judging the contest!

And I encourage all of you to participate!
