Yankee Stadium Umps Blow Another One

If you're at the ballpark for three hours, what would be the difference if it were 3:07 and the calls were right? -- Michael Kay

I never thought I'd say this, but... well put, Mr. Kay.

After catching a break from the umps on Sunday when a Carlos Delgado homer was incorrectly called foul, the Yanks were on the cheated end of a play tonight. During the bottom of the sixth inning, A-Rod, who had already homered back in the third, hit a long one out above the wall in right-center field. It didn't go out of the park, though -- it hit off the yellow staircase above/behind the wall and bounced back into the field, where it was played as a base hit. A-Rod was trotting around the bases in home run style, but had to catch himself at second when he realized his homer wasn't being played as such.

Once A-Rod was secure at second base, he and Giambi commenced the arguing, but the umps were un-persuadable and the hit stood as a double. As you can imagine, A-Rod did not take being robbed of a multi-homer game too kindly. He didn't blow up, but there were evil stares and shakes of the head apleanty.

Like the Delgado homer/foul, the call didn't end up making a difference in the outcome of the game as the Yanks crushed the O's 8-0, but as happens every time an ump blows a call, the idea of instant replay is coming up again. Personally, I'm on Michael Kay's side on this one. The amount of time it would take the umps to saunter on over to a replay monitor would be negligible within the context of a nine-inning game, and being able to verify controversial calls would actually keep the game on track and eliminate arguments.

Mets Help Yanks Continue Their Suck Streak

Question: Why aren't Yankees fans fired up with frustration this season? The team is three games under .500 and they've taken up residence in the lonely AL East cellar.

Answer: I do not know.

After getting rained out last night, the Yanks played the Mets at home today, and it was an important game for both teams. The Mets' recent slide has many fans speculating that Willy Randolph's job may be on the line at this point, and the Yanks simply need to prove to themselves that they can indeed score some runs. Despite giving up three homers -- to Jeter, Abreu, and Giambi -- Santana held the Yanks off and led his team to a 7-4 victory.

After today's game, the Yanks have lost six of their last ten and have only scored a measly ten runs in the last 45 innings, a particularly low total when we take the fine performances of Jeter and Matsui into account. The pitching hasn't been helping either; they've given up 22 runs in the past five games alone.

Last year at this time, Yankees fans had whipped themselves into a panicked frenzy, convinced that the team was destined to watch the post-season on Jeter's 100" plasma screen rather than participate in the good times. So why the lack of panic this year? What is the difference in the fans' minds? Is it because they learned their lesson last year and have decided to be more patient before committing to a freakout? Or are we all onvinced things will turn around once A-Rod and Jorgie make their triumphant returns? Or is it perhaps a show of faith in Girardi?

'Stupid' Yanks Bringing I-Ken Back

The Yankees gave Ian Kennedy the boot a little over a week ago, sending him to AAA to let him take a break from the pressures of New York (and to give themselves a break from his apparent inability to get batters out), but he's been working hard to prove he doesn't belong in Scranton -- he wants back in New York as soon as possible. After just two appearances with Scranton he can declare mission accomplished (the exact opposite of Bush's definition of the phrase): he'll be starting the game against the Rays on Thursday.

Before his first game with Scranton last week, I-Ken told his wife that he was going to go out there and "make them look stupid," presumably implying that he was going to prove to the Yanks that he does indeed still possess all the talent scouts insisted he had. During that game he went 7.1 innings, gave up one hit, struck out eight and didn't issue any walks; even better, he only needed 90 pitches to make it happen. He made his second appearance today, where he pitched one inning (it was a short appearance so that he'll be ready to go on Thursday) and gave up a hit and no runs. Those outings, combined with Kei Igawa's disastrous pitching (why did any of us bother to hope for a better outcome?) last week was all the Yanks needed to see.

I always feel a little bad for players -- especially those that that play hard -- when they're sent down to AAA, but in this case there was no need for pity. Ian Kennedy took full advantage of the little reprieve and hopefully regained both focus and confidence.

There's Still Hope: I-Ken Starts His AAA Trip Off With a Bang

Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes have put the Yanks (not to mention us fans) through a lot of heartaches and headaches this year, leading many to question all those scouting reports that made them out to be can't-miss stars. Hughes recused himself by fracturing a rib, thus avoiding both the ever-increasing pressure and/or embarrassing and confidence-shattering move to the bullpen or AAA. The latter turned out to be I-Ken's fate after a miserable season start.

Being demoted is surely a blow to one's self-esteem, but in this case it might be just what Kennedy needs to BOOST his confidence. He made his first start with Scranton today, and he didn't waste any time showing the Yanks that he's still got the talent we all saw last year. In his Scranton debut today he went 7.1 innings, gave up just one hit (he had a no-hitter going through 5 2/3), struck out eight and didn't walk a soul (although he did hit a dude) and threw 90 pitches. Rather than sinking into a depression or beating himself up about being sent down, IPK is using his time wisely to show the Yanks that he can and will turn things around when he is recalled.

Today's outing is definitely a positive sign, and he'll have at least one more chance to impress the Yankees, as he can't be called back up until at least ten days have passed since he was sent down. It'll be none other than our old pal (and by "pal" I mean "source of much frustration") Kei Igawa taking I-Ken's start on Friday.

Earlier this year I implored everyone not to jump to bad conclusions about Kennedy or Hughes and to maintain a smidgen of patience. If I-Ken can remember to bring those skilllzz back to New York when he leaves Scranton. we'll be glad we did.

Under the Gun Update: Dice-K

Before the season started, us MLB FanHousers took a gander at each team and selected one player from each on whom a hearty chunk of pressure was going to lie in our Under the Gun feature. My selection for the Red Sox was Dice-K, and my reasoning was as follows:

Red Sox fans are going to expect more from him in the second year of his 6 year, $52 million contract. The team also paid $51+ million as a posting fee, and while that is not included in his salary, fans and detractors alike tend to take that into account when determining whether he is worth all of that cold hard cash.

Now that he's had a chance to make a few starts in 2008, I thought we'd check in and see how he's handling the pressure.

Answer? He's not just "handling" it, he's disregarding it completely. He is living up to every expectation thus far, letting Red Sox fans count on him as an ace with full confidence. If you're not familiar with what he's been up to all season, here's a quick rundown:

Record: 5-0
ERA: 2.43
K: 33
BB: 27
Whip: 1.20

Not bad, eh (<--- catering to Canadian readers)? He's even good when he's bad -- he walked eight yesterday but only gave up one run.

During his rookie season last year, I will admit that I was not all that impressed. He was good, obviously, but not what the baseball world was hoping. Now? I'm starting to see what the Red Sox must have seen when they plunked down 50 mil for a cup of coffee with the guy.
