Still Time for Sergio in Rough '09, Beyond

Monday afternoon in downtown New York and while Sergio Garcia may not have time on his hands, he does have his hands on an expensive timepiece.

Less than 24 hours after the final round of the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., provided another reminder that golf seems to be carrying a real mad-on for him, the star-crossed Spaniard is keeping a scheduled sponsor promotional appearance for Omega. In addition to hosting a clinic for youngsters from two New York junior golf associations, Garcia is on hand to donate his "Mission Hills Double Eagle Chronograph Constellation" wristwatch to a public display that includes Michael Phelps' Planet Ocean Chronograph and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin's Speedmaster Moonwatch.

So when better to ask: Where has the time gone?

Ryan Moore on Sponsors: 'Certainly Not Against' Them

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Once upon a time, Ryan Moore had many sponsors. This is because he was a U.S. Amateur Champion and the golf world had high expectations for him on the PGA Tour. Of course, at the point that "once upon a time" equates to "five years," well, people tend to forget.

And Moore concedes that a certain point he himself forgot what he was doing and that at a certain point, three years into a winless career, he needed to refocus on what was important for his golf career. And that, apparently, meant shedding almost all of his sponsors and concentrating on his golf game.

Ryan Moore Wins Wyndham Championship on Third Playoff Hole

FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ryan Moore never really looked like a candidate to win the Wyndham Championship. It's not that he's untalented by any means (in fact, nothing could be further from the truth), but a third-round 70 seemed to doom the unsponsored youngster. But he fought back several times late in the afternoon at Greensboro and won his first ever PGA event in five seasons on the Tour.

Only four other players in the top-20 shot above 70 during a third round that saw Sergio Garcia make tremendous leaderboard moves, and Moore was, for most of the day, well behind the leaders. But a scorching 31 on the back nine that featured five consecutive birdies from holes 12 to 16 suddenly vaulted Moore into the lead by himself.

Kevin Stadler, Allen, Riley Use Wyndham Championship to Make FedEx Cup

FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Neither Michael Allen or Chris Riley will be remembered at the Wyndham Championship. Allen will end up with a top-five finish, and Riley led heading into the fourth day, but because they failed to make the playoff (or much noise on Sunday at Sedgefield for that matter) no one will discuss their presence here.

Kevin Stadler, who did make the playoff will be remembered, naturally. But for a bigger reason, all three golfers will probably look back at the 2009 Wyndham a little more fondly. That's because their respective performances this week guaranteed them a spot in the FedEx Cup and the opportunity to make some more money in the 2009 PGA season.

Kevin Stadler Does Not Make With the Clutch on 18 at the Wyndham

FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Kevin Stadler needed just an eight-footer to win the 2009 Wyndham and, as you may have seen on your teevee, he missed it. It made things less awkward for new crowd favorite Ryan Moore who also tossed up a bogey after going right of the fairway on 18. Did Stadler choke? Or did Donald Ross just design an impossibly difficult 18th hole? It's hard to say, so let's just go to the video. (Bonus: The dude next to me does his best -- worst? -- Jim Mora impersonation immediately following Stadler's whiff.)

Stadler, Moore and Bohn Will Duel to the Death in Three-Way Wyndham Playoff

FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- First things first: Sergio Garcia choked. Hard. Again. As usual. He not only went bogey-bogey on 11 and 12 while holding the tournament and a three-stroke lead on the back nine, but he managed to stick his second shot in the bunker at 18, which meant he needed to hole a shot out of the bunker to win.

Update, 6:40 PM: Bohn was eliminated on the first 18th hole and Moore and Stadler continue to battle things out, as they both par the 10th hole and head to 18. Again.

Update, 6:55 PM: Moore wins his first PGA Tour tournament with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

Of course, he actually almost did sink the chip, but that's beside the point (and more on that later). Because he's not in the playoff during a tournament that he should have won because he fired a 37 (!) on the back nine today. The folks that are in the playoff? Kevin Stadler, Jason Bohn and Ryan Moore, who manage to comprise a pretty interesting group.

Sergio, Stadler Surge Into Sunday Turn at Sold-Out Wyndham

FanHouse is no longer fighting the rain, but still at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The bad weather has entirely evaporated on a Sunday afternoon at the Wyndham and, in place of the rain, a much-hotter-than-it-feels sunny afternoon has yielded some early low scores from the top of the leaderboard.

Sergio Garcia, after a slow start -- parring the first four holes -- ripped off three straight birdies on five, six and seven before giving a stroke back on nine. He and Bill Haas, who has faded with an even-par day, are easily the crowd favorites thus far, generating the biggest throngs of the 33,000-person, sold-out crowd at Sedgefield.

Davis Love, John Daly's Pants Victims of Second Cut on Wyndham Sunday

FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Typically speaking, after two days of PGA golf there is a cut. (This, I hope, is obvious to even the most casual of golfing readers.) But this year's Wyndham was a little different, which seems fitting given the nature of the tournament's scheduling so far.

See, 87 players made the cut through 36 holes. That, of course, is too many. So an additional 17 were chopped off of the end of the leaderboard, and that group awkwardly included some pretty big names. And I'm not just talking about 16-year-old Justin Thomas.

Couples, Garcia Contending at Rain-Battered Wyndham

Fred CouplesFanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- There are an impressive number of "hometown favorites" at the Wyndham this year: Davis Love is a semi-local and previous winner; Carl Pettersson is an actual ex-Greensboro resident and last year's winner; and Brandt Snedeker even has his own fans -- literally. There are fans for patrons to purchase that have his face on them.

But the story heading into Saturday afternoon and the 4,000th rain delay* of the tournament is the presence of Sergio Garcia and Fred Couples on the leaderboard, sandwiched between the unknown Chris Riley and the unsponsored Ryan Moore. Couples, now approaching 50 years of age, and Garcia, winless since last year's Players, both have an opportunity to make some noise heading into the FedEx Cup.
