Presidents Cup Teams Announced

The Presidents Cup is a month away, and Tuesday the teams were announced. It's a welcome break from the FedEx Cup excitement. (To be fair, this year's event has been infinitely more interesting than it was in 2007 or 2008 but still, it's hard to get too worked up about manufactured drama. Well, unless it's wrestling.)

In any event, the International captain, Greg Norman, and the American captain, Fred Couples, were joined by PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem in Washington, DC to name their selections during a televised press conference.

The captains' picks (as well as their comments from the presser -- beware, there's a lot of excitement) are after the jump:

Adam Scott Takes Uneven Game to Wyndham Championship

Adam Scott was the third-ranked player in the world a year ago. Now, he's 46th and falling. He's fresh off a missed cut at the PGA Championship, carding 82-79 for a two-day, 17-over finish that left him outside the line by 13 strokes.

His Hazeltine experience has been a microcosm of his season. But as John Paul Newport, writing in the Wall Street Journal, pointed out Saturday, there are mitigating circumstances.

"The 29-year-old broke a hand last year and split with his longtime girlfriend, but his biggest problem is putting. In 2008 he led the Tour in putts from 10 feet to 15 feet and was third from 15 feet to 20 feet. This year he ranks 192nd and 152nd, respectively."

Crane Leads Red Day at Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass is supposed to be brutal. It's supposed to be nasty. For heaven's sake, it's supposed to be the fifth major! Well, unless the fairways and greens are soft and the wind doesn't blow.

Ben Crane, who started on the back nine in the first round of the Players Championship, turned at 3-under 33, but went on a tear from there, making five birdies in six holes on his way to a 7-under 65 and the first-round lead. Crane, who hasn't won on tour since 2005, noted after his round that the greens were perfect, "like putting on the hood of your car," and the low scores the first day indicated that.

Phil Mickelson Looks Too Good to Stop Wearing the (Cursed) White Belt

If you're Phil Mickelson, criticism follows you like the smell of last night's party follows Lindsay Lohan. The guy has won three majors, yet he hasn't won enough. The dude is second in the world, but he can't beat Tiger Woods. He even smiles too much.

When Mickelson was gaining the pounds, people couldn't help but point out his midsection. Now, he's lost the weight and decided to pimp a white belt like he's one of the Jonas Brothers. The problem is, the guy hasn't played well with the white belt. ESPN's Jason Sobel pointed out last week that Mickelson has only broken par once in six rounds with the white belt, but Phil said it won't disappear. The way he put it, is well, pretty darn FIGJAM-y.

Who Is Best Golfer With No Major?

Before Phil Mickelson broke through at the 2004 Masters, Lefty held the ultimate "kissing your sister" title. Phil was the "best player to never have won a major championship." Sure, Phil had made waves in majors, nearly taking the title at the 1999 U.S. Open and the 2001 PGA Championship, but he couldn't break through. Once the infamous birdie leap occurred at Augusta National in '04, Mickelson passed that title off to someone. The thing is, nobody has really grabbed it as feverishly as Phil did. He was the major-less face. Now, according to Forbes, it isn't Sergio Garcia.

Making the Cut: 5 Hottest Golfers

Each Wednesday during the golf season, FanHouse will be bringing you the top five names in golf and why they are important this week. Did Barack Obama play 18 holes with Tiger Woods? Did a certain player do something off the course that made him or her a hot topic? Or was just playing golf enough to get the pot stirring? Join us for a new weekly ranking feature we call Making the Cut.

5. Danny Lee -- He is only 18, but Lee has made some waves in his amateur career and just this week decided to turn pro, after using his Masters invitation from his U.S. Amateur win. If you don't think he's ready for the PGA Tour, you're very wrong. Earlier this year, Lee won the Johnnie Walker Classic, a European Tour event that has such esteemed former champions as Adam Scott, Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Mr. Woods. Lee was the youngest winner ever on the European Tour, and will be in the field at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans for his first tournament as a pro.

Meet Tiger's First Test, Brendan Jones

Trust me, if you've never heard of Brendan Jones until this week, you're far from alone. He is the poor soul that will be going up against Tiger Woods in the first round of the Accenture Match Play. Jones obviously has his work cut out for him.

Jones is a ripe 33 years old and has played on the PGA Tour before, but for only one season. In 2005, Jones was a full-time member with the big boys, making only 14 or 28 cuts, with a single top-10 finish at the B.C. Open, a tournament Tiger Woods wouldn't sniff if it was the last competition on Earth.

What else should you know about the Australian?

Kenny Perry Rules Golf Right Now

What, you think that headline is ridiculous? You think I'm just blowing smoke because Kenny Perry, a ripe, old 48, won the FBR Open and I am -- like a lot of people do right after events conclude -- expanding upon this storyline more than I normally would just because he won?

Well, I'm not just making this up. The statistics are here to back me up.

Plain and simple, since June of 2008, no golfer has won more events on the PGA Tour than Perry. Zero people. None.

Monday Pin Placement: Zach Johnson Enjoyed Hawaii

Every Monday during the PGA TOUR season, Monday's Pin Placement will run as a wrap-up of the weekend action, with a little commentary mixed in. We will focus on anything you may have missed while you were grinding on the putting green.

Zach Johnson Gets Lei'd -- So much is said about the young golfers these days. We talk about Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore and just about anyone else that is under 30 and has a little game. What is hard for most to realize (because Tiger didn't do it) is most professional golfers don't hit their talent strides until they get to 30.

Could Alex Rodriguez and Adam Scott Be Dueling for Kate Hudson's Affections?

Shane Bacon, who makes TMZ look like the Superficial (no offense, SF), recently reported that golf's young, total hotty Adam Scott was an item with Kate Hudson.

On the surface, it seems like a pretty cute little relationship. Until you hear that Alex Rodriguez might be dating her.
Kate Hudson was seen on a three-hour date with Alex Rodriguez in New York City this past week. We had reported late last year Kate and A-Rod flirting in Miami. Now that things have cooled between A-Rod and his "spiritual Kaballah" buddy Madonna, he can now finally date his way through all the blondes in Hollywood.
O.M.G. indeed. Look, the last thing to ever be remotely surprising is a gossip mag tying Alex Rodriguez to an attractive starlet. But it does seem odd that he's being linked to Hudson so quickly after Scott was "dating" her. Of course, this can only really mean one thing: a duel to the death.

Glove, slap. Baby, glove slap ...
