FanHouse NFL Season Preview: Cincinnati Bengals - Changing Their Stripes?

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is a month off, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterback: If there is one constant on this team, it is Carson Palmer. Sure, Palmer didn't have his best season a year ago, but his off seasons are better than many QBs best years. In reality, other things factored into his poor season (injuries to the line, injury to Rudi Johnson, receivers pouting). The only issue here is what happens in Cincinnati if Palmer gets hurt. They have no one groomed to come in. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jeff Rowe are in their second seasons with the team and Carson's brother, Jordan, is fighting for a spot. Heat Index: 8

Running backs: Injuries have hurt this unit in the past couple of years. Workhorse Rudi Johnson finally hit a wall; Kenny Irons blew out his knee in his first preseason game; Chris Perry has never been able to stay on the field. Well, Rudi and Perry are healthy again, with 2007 surprises Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey around to give the offense a different dynamic. Cincy needs this unit to get back to form to allow the entire offense to explode. Heat Index: 4

Receivers: Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are one of the best receiving combos in the NFL. T.J. tied for the lead in receptions; Chad was third in receiving yards. However, this could be the last season either is in Cincinnati. Johnson's issues with the team are well documented. T.J. is in his final contracted season. Chris Henry is finally gone and there are several guys trying to step into that #3 spot. Rookie Jerome Simpson will get a strong look, as will Andre Caldwell and Antonio Chatman. Chatman is the only one with experience and could get the nod. Heat Index: 8

Keith Rivers Wants to Buy Ahmad Brooks #55; If He Waits, He May Get it For Free

Bengals first round pick, linebacker Keith Rivers, wore #58 during the rookie minicamp two weekends ago. However, he really wants his college number of #55 ... a damn good number for USC 'backers.

However, current Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks currently wears those digits on his candy-corn uniform. Rivers is interested in buying it off of him:

No. 1 pick Keith Rivers has already opened up negotiations with veteran linebacker Ahmad Brooks to get USC's No. 55.

"But I've got another month to work on him," said Rivers, who wore No. 58.

It may be more like Brooks has another month to sell it. See, Brooks has this little issue of punching a woman that goes to court on June 6th. Depending on how that plays out, Rivers could find himself in a buyers market. If something happens where Brooks faces discipline, maybe Rivers can just get it for free.

Don't laugh. Odell Thurman once wore #51 for the Bengals (there are people around town with them). Once he was suspended by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, he lost his number to Corey Mays. Now that Thurman has been reinstated by the league, he will wear #45 for the orange and black this year.

Cincinnati Bengals Need to Stay Out of Kentucky

Cincinnati lies on the Ohio River -- and Kentucky lies on the other side. As far as the Bengals are concerned, they could burn all the bridges that connect the two because nothing good seems to happen when their players hang in the Bluegrass State.

Boone County, KY has seen a lot of the horrors. Yesterday, linebacker Ahmad Brooks was accused of punching a woman there. Cornerback Jonathan Joseph was there when he was picked up for marijuana possession.

Chris Henry lives in Boone County (I pass his house frequently). In his neighborhood, he was accused of punching a 16-year old but the accusations were unfounded. Police also found a stolen car in his driveway ... which was a rental car that had disputed charges on it. All the other stuff he's done has also shed a poor light on his community.

Oh, and Shaun Alexander ... who went to Boone County High School ... now wants to be a Bengal. Why the heck not? Alexander, a born again Christian, would stick out like a sore thumb.

Elsewhere in Northern Kentucky, Chad Johnson is in the middle of a lawsuit over a bogus raffle. It is claimed that Johnson didn't pay up on certain prizes that were raffled off at a comedy club in Newport, KY. Henry also was arrested in Covington, KY for buying alcohol for some underage girls.

Just down the road in Taylor Mill, KY, former Bengal linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested for hitting his girlfriend. Former Bengal (and current Brown) Eric Steinbach was picked up for boating under the influence on the Ohio River (which is, in a weird twist, Kentucky property).

Current Bengals Who Have Been in Trouble at Some Point

Former Bengals Who Got In Trouble While With the Team

This isn't a post as much as it is a running page to document some of the difficulties this Bengals organization has had.

Bengals Linebacker Ahmad Brooks Accused of Punching a Woman

Hey ... I got a Bengals story that has nothing to do with Chad Johnson or Chris Henry. But it does involve assault!

Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been accused of punching a woman in the eye and sending her to the hospital:

Destiny Rosich gave a sworn statement Wednesday that Brooks was arguing outside her neighbor's home on April 9 in the 7600 block of Banklick Street. She said her children were outside playing and began to cry because Brooks and the neighbor were about to start a fistfight.

Brooks told the neighbor that he was going to "split his head open," Rosich wrote in her statement.

That when she "nicely approached" Brooks and asked him to stop and "take it somewhere else," according to the statement.

"He then pulled back his fist and struck (punched) me in the left eye," Rosich wrote. "I then fell and blacked out."

When Rosich gained consciousness, she grabbed her children, ran inside her home, called 911 and was taken to an area emergency room.

Police are considering it a fourth degree assault and limited their involvement to explaining to Rosich how to file a criminal summons. Brooks has been summoned to a court hearing on June 6th to answer to the charge.

Brooks has played two years with the Bengals after they selected him in the 2006 Supplemental Draft.

NFL Draft: Keith Rivers Will Help the Cincinnati Bengals On and Off the Field

The linebacker position in Cincinnati has been quite the adventure:

Odell Thurman played well in his rookie season of 2005 ... but has sat out the last two seasons for violating the league's substance abuse policy. David Pollack broke his neck in his second game of his second season and was forced to retire. A.J. Nicholson's career didn't last too long after off-field issues. Ahmad Brooks has barely seen the field due to injuries.

This was a team that had to bring Dhani Jones off the scrap heap ... and he turned into one of their best defensive players. At one point last year, the Bengals couldn't field a linebacking corps at all. Keith Rivers will be a big, big help there.

There have been rumblings that the Bengals could move to the 3-4 defense and Rivers would be a great fit if they do. He has the ability to rush the passer as well as cover backs and tight ends. Right now, the Bengals will have Brooks and Jones seemingly as starters with Thurman, Rashad Jeanty and Eric Henderson as other options.

Virginia Dismisses LB J'Courtney Williams

It was supposed to be so easy (good lookin', Mike Skinner). Heavily recruited out of Danville, VA, J'Courtney Williams was a 4-star prospect set out to cover two needs for the Cavaliers, the first being the heir apparent to brilliant if somewhat foolhardy linebackers like Ahmad Brooks and Kai Parham. The other, well, it should be obvious how he could replace D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

Well, to paraphrase something Homer Simpson once said, Al Groh would be lying if he said his men weren't committing crimes. Williams only manifested the "foolhardy" portion of the bargain, getting involved in a low-level credit card scam that wasn't particularly bright in planning or execution. According to reports, a student claimed his wallet was stolen at the Virginia's main athletic center, and...okay. Stop right there.

Now, I realize that Virginia students tend to have a reputation as being well-to-do, and maybe I'm just getting old, but it's probably not wise to nab some poor teen's card when a: his parents probably see the bill and b: it's probably not blessed with the sort of credit limit you'd prefer for your jag/spree. Worse yet, Williams couldn't even be bothered to buy anything cool with his ill-gotten goods. Supposedly, he was found out after making 19 purchases at a Tuttle dorm vending... That's not even Treehouse ballin'. Maybe you can help me out in the comments, but I mostly remember Tuttle having a computer lab and I dunno, maybe some snack machines. And an elevator. That was pretty cool. But otherwise, you're gonna risk your college career for that? Then again, maybe the whole snack machine thing relates to his marijuana charges as well.

Groh was swift with the guillotine, and Williams has been dismissed from the program; all things considered between Olu Hall, Parham, Brooks and Williams, I probably shouldn't be so quick to criticize Groh for recruiting seemingly nothing but linebackers and tight ends. It's been mentioned that Louisville, Kentucky and Mississippi State were among the schools Virginia beat out for J'Courtney, and if I were a betting man, I wouldn't count out the one that took a flyer on Willie Williams. No relation?

NFL Offseason Roadmap: Cincinnati Bengals

NFL Offseason Roadmap is a series focused on the needs of NFL teams as they begin the offseason.

Needless to say, the 2007 season for the Cincinnati Bengals was a major disappointment. That being said, Cincy finished 7-9 and has plenty of talent to make a U-turn and get back to the elite status they feel they should be at. The Bengals notoriously doesn't try to build via free agency but they need to fill in some cracks this way for a turnaround to be successful.

1. Defensive Line – The first major move was firing Chuck Bresnahan as defensive coordinator and hiring Mike Zimmer. The next big moves cannot be made until the team decides if it is going to switch to a 3-4 defense or not. If they decide to do that, there will be a ton of work to do.

It is widly speculated that the Bengals will be looking to go after a rush end in the draft. Defensive end Justin Smith may be as good as gone. Smith is a decent player but isn't worth being the second highest paid player on the team. Letting him walk would free up all kinds of money to rebuild this unit. However, re-signing him for a paycut would be beneficial, too. John Thornton could be a salary cap casulty, though the team seems to want him back.

Bengals Lose Another Linebacker

This summer, when NFL FanHouse was previewing the 2007 season, we rolled out the '30 Player to Watch.' Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks made the list. Partly because he was a young linebacker with big-play potential, partly due to Cincinnati's perennial need for a run defense, and the ever-looming troubles of the 2005 second-round pick, Odell Thurman.

Here's what I wrote at the time:
Bottom line: If Brooks struggles -- remember, he he basically went through last season blind (he was drafted in July, understandably bumbled his way through training camp, and was benched during the season because of "maturity issues") -- the defense could be in for another disappointing season. If, on the other hand, Brooks holds his own and the defense improves, the Bengals could be a legit threat to make the post-season.
Earlier this week, Cincinnati placed Brooks on injured reserve. Brooks hadn't played since suffering a groin injury in Week 2. The AP writes that middle linebacker "has been a trouble spot for the Bengals since Takeo Spikes insisted he wanted out after the 2002 season."

Lewis seemed to accept that the gods are against him: "The position is the ghost of Takeo, I guess," Lewis said Wednesday. "It's haunted. It's been an interesting thing. Anyway, it is what it is, and we've got to go on." On the upside, Cincinnati signed Dhani Jones, prolonging his playing career. Which means more bow ties for everyone!

Bengals' Defense Is in a Bad Way

After last week's embarrassing performance in Cleveland, I'm guessing many Bengals fans thought to themselves, "well, that was awful, but it can't get any worse." Um, maybe not. In addition to the humiliation that goes along with surrendering 51 points to the Browns, and catapulting Derek Anderson to the Offensive Player of the Week, the Bengals also suffered some key injuries.

Linebackers Ahmad Brooks and Lemar Marshall have missed practice this week, and both are likely out for the Seahawks game tomorrow. Brooks, a third-round supplemental pick last summer, replaced Odell Thurman at middle linebacker. And so far, he's been pretty good. Not great, obviously -- see 51 points, Cleveland's offense -- but good.

Now, though, against a balanced Seahawks unit, the Bengals could be forced to start Caleb Miller at middle linebacker. Cincy also signed Dhani Jones earlier this week, and he could see time if Marshall is declared out. Whatever, defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan will probably feature a lot of nickel and dime packages against Seattle.

Which means one-armed bandit Shaun Alexander could be in for a humongous day. Cincy's full squad allowed thought-to-be-washed-up Jamal Lewis to romp for 216 yards last week, so Alexander could set the single-season rushing mark tomorrow. Take the over ... whatever it is.
