You had to be crazy not to see this coming. And whether you think the penalty was too stiff or not harsh enough for the crime, just know that Larry Johnson is being punished. In a release from the Kansas City Chiefs, we find out that Johnson will receive a two-game suspension.

The Kansas City Chiefs have suspended RB Larry Johnson for Conduct Detrimental to the Club effective immediately. Johnson will not be permitted to participate in any team activities or be on team premises until Monday, November 9th. The Chiefs will have no further comment on Johnson's status at this time.

This punishment wasn't as harsh as I predicted, but since I have no say in the matter let's focus on what the Chiefs are doing to make sure their rushing attack doesn't suffer.

Well, Adrian Peterson was seen as "limited" in yet another mid-week practice. However, isn't this becoming familiar ground? The guy ranks amongst the tops in the league for total carries and touches on the season. He takes a pounding and always gets back up for more. It's as if we just want to circle him as an injury liability, when despite missing a few games as a rookie – he's maintained a pretty consistent healthy track record in the NFL.

Of course the guy is sore and of course he's not going to be going full steam with this current ankle injury. As usual, the Vikings disclosed very little on the Peterson ankle injury. You have to monitor the situation, but it doesn't sound as if it's a high ankle sprain, which would certainly put AP on the pine. He is looking at a very tough and physical matchup with the Steelers this weekend. Considering it's AP, though, don't bench him. You never bench him.

When the San Diego Chargers have the ball in the red zone with plans to run the ball, everyone on the planet knows that LaDainian Tomlinson gets the football. Especially, say Chris Jenkins and Kevin Gemmell of the San Diego Union-Tribune, when Tomlinson is playing like the Pro Bowl-caliber back we're so used to seeing. But, on Monday night, instead of calling Tomlinson's number, Darren Sproles got the carry.

The odd part about that was, this wasn't another one of those nights for Tomlinson, not one of those games where every one of his rushing attempts seemed so futile and fruitless and belied his long-held stature as one of the game's truly great backs.

The other day a commenter asked me what I thought the Big Ten needed to do to get back on track. Well, I've only thought about that question every day since the end of last season, so as you might suspect, I have a few ideas.

First off, let's put all the cards on the table. What is "broken" in the Big Ten? The league suffers under the perception/reality that, while its teams look very good against each other, they fold up in competition with teams from other conferences, specifically the Big 12, SEC and Pac 10.

Why? Because the Big Ten has become synonymous with a slow, plodding, and most of all boring style of football. Does this sound familiar to some of you? It should.

Keep a close eye on this Saturday's preseason game as Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt expects rookie running back Chris "Beanie" Wells to get some reps against San Diego, but his time to shine appears to be dwindling fast. The Arizona Repbulic reported that Beanie Wells twisted his already sore ankle on Wednesday night at practice. With Tim Hightower moving well ahead Wells as the favorite for the starting job, this could be one of Wells' last chances to make a bid for the starting spot.

The rookie out of Ohio State seemed like a perfect fit to take the reigns in the backfield and raised a lot of fantasy eyebrows as a favorite choice for a 2009 sleeper. Now his ADP is slipping fast and his value as a fantasy threat for the early part of the season appear to be slim to none. Never say never, but this is looking like an uphill battle for Wells.

While the rest of the NFL is taking part in a free agent spree, the Chicago Bears have been incredibly quiet. I'm not necessarily talking about signing guys, because sometimes that stuff is out of your control. I'm talking about the Bears not being mentioned in any rumors for any free agent or possible trade target.

It's not as though the team doesn't have needs, as I outlined five in the offseason roadmap. I unintentionally omitted another need, which was astutely pointed out by the first commenter -- that they need an able-bodied backup to Matt Forte in the backfield as well. So that makes six pretty important needs.

The Texans announced today that oft-injured and old running back Ahman Green and outside linebacker Morlon Greenwood have been cut. Green could never stay on the field, and Greenwood was pretty much a defensive liability on one of the worst defenses in the league.

This move is not unexpected given their poor production paired with having huge salaries relative to the rest of the team. This likely is the quiet end to Green's time in the NFL. In his 11 year career, he had 9045 yards rushing, 2865 yards receiving and 73 touchdowns. Six times he rushed for over 1000 yards, including 5 times in a row between the years 2000-2004.

When NFL free agency starts, the free agents are typically not the only ones who are looking for a new contract. A handful of players who have years left on their current deals are bound to decide that they've "out-performed the contract." Some of these players will decide to politely request a new deal or a raise, with no intention of doing anything in retaliation should they not get what they want.

What many fans don't necessarily know is that a lot of the rumblings start at the Pro Bowl.

The Houston Chronicle reported today that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub could possibly play in the Monday Night Football game. He's back practicing after suffering a knee injury from two low hits from Vikings DE Jared Allen.

Looking at the quotes from the Friday press conference in their entirety, I'm doubting that Schaub plays in that game. Gary Kubiak sees progress, but says that Schaub is "still a little bit limited."

That running back Steve Slaton says he feeling better is bigger news. With Ahman Green predictably finding his way onto IR, the Texans have to rely on Slaton because the two guys playing behind him are Ryan Moats, who wasn't in camp, and FB Cecil Sapp.

This likely means that the Texans are going to likely throw the ball more and pass protection from the RB spot might be an adventure. Unleash the Rosenchappa interception machine.

In the battle of two of the most disappointing teams this season, the Texans won on the road so this means the Browns are more disappointing. So I guess they can take that as a victory of sorts.

Browns' QB Brady Quinn started despite a broken index finger on this throwing hand and was largely ineffective when he wasn't throwing interceptions. Derek Anderson replaced him to equally poor results. WR Braylon Edwards was the Browns leading receiver, but his story of the game was more of sloppy routes and dropped passes.

The Browns were very effective in spurts running the ball against the poor Texans run defense, but coach Romeo Crennel inexplicably gave up on the run.
