Here's French swimmer Alain Bernard smashing the world record in the 100-meter freestyle this weekend, complete with an exciting play-by-play from a French sportscaster:
So how did Bernard finish in 47.60 seconds, more than half a second better than his previous best? It might be the fact that he has the upper body of an NFL linebacker, but a lot of credit is going to his suit, the new Speedo LZR, which everyone agrees will cause world records to fall in Beijing.
"I don't think it's coincidence that all the world records were broken just a few weeks after the suits were released," former Olympic swimmer Michael Klim said.
There's even talk that the Speedo LZR provides such a great advantage that it should be banned from international swimming competitions. But that's unlikely to happen by August, meaning most swimming world records are likely to be broken in Beijing.
