Aleksander Emelianenko Tries Boxing



Aleksander Emelianenko, the MMA fighter best known as the younger brother of world heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, has been appearing in small shows around the world over the last year since failing to get medical clearance to fight in California in August of 2008. But on Saturday he tried something new: Instead of appearing on a small MMA show, he appeared on a small boxing show, fighting opponent Hizir Pliev to a four-round draw.

Aleksander Emelianenko, the younger brother of Fedor, is back on the market for a new fight after announcing on his website Thursday his withdrawal from a Sept. 29 fight in South Korea.

Citing the lack of dialogue from the promoter regarding an opponent, Emelianenko has pulled out of the Fighting Mixed Combative 2 card and is accepting proposals right away so that he can return to action "as soon as possible."

In an MMA fight that lasted less than a minute and a half, Aleksander Emelianenko was first rocked by an Ibragim Magomedov punch and then declared the winner by TKO when a cut prevented Magomedov from continuing.

Aleksander Emelianenko, the heavyweight MMA fighter who is best known as the younger brother of Fedor Emelianenko, defeated Sang Soo Lee with a first-round knockout yesterday at the M-1 Challenge event in St. Petersburg, Russia. Here's the video:



Emelianenko threw a combination that floored Lee, and the referee quickly stepped in to stop the fight. But while Emelianenko showed that he can still fight, questions remain about his future in MMA.

Almost all of the talk leading up to Saturday night's Affliction show has centered on the headliner in the main event, Fedor Emelianenko.

But there's another Emelianenko brother fighting Saturday night, Fedor's younger brother Aleksander Emelianenko, who faces Paul Buentello on the undercard.

Aside from Fedor taking on Randy Couture, there may be no heavyweight fight in mixed martial arts that would get the attention of the Emelianenko brothers fighting each other, but Aleksander, who answered my questions this week with translating help from his publicist, told me that will never happen.
