For Just One Scary Day, Andy Roddick Was a Waffle House Chef

Andy RoddickDon't tell Andy Roddick that Halloween is for kids.

Or golfer Stewart Cink.

Or even 50-year-old John McEnroe.

They were just a few of the sports figures that donned interesting costumes for Halloween. Luckily, cameras are always on handy to capture the oddities. After the jump, look at some of the best (and worst) Halloween costumes worn by athletes, fans ... and a dog.

Now go fetch your griddle, Andy!

Was the Fix in on Wozniacki's 'Injury'?

In a sport that has had a serious gambling scandal involving suspicions of match-fixing, how are we supposed to take Caroline Wozniacki's match the other day?

I'm starting to wonder exactly how many tennis matches aren't really on the up-and-up. Wozniacki, who reached the U.S. Open final, led Anne Kremer 7-5, 5-0 Tuesday at the Luxembourg Open.

And that's when Wozniacki chose to retire from the match with an injury. No broken bones. No fall. She had won seven straight games and was four points from winning.

"The injury suddenly happened," she said.

No way.

No Pain, No Gain on the Tours

Three weeks. That's all Andy Roddick is expected to miss with the knee injury that knocked him out of the Shanghai Masters last week in the middle of his first-round match.

It should still give him time to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London in November.

"Results of the MRI [scan] showed a mild sprain of his medial collateral ligament of the left knee," said a statement on Roddick's website. "The news was very good for Andy. No surgery will be needed and Andy is expected to make a 100 percent recovery."

Players Divided Over Grueling Schedule

It seemed so simple at first, when Andy Roddick made his point better than anyone could. He complained on Monday that the tennis schedule is too demanding, and warned that star players could start dropping.

Then his knee popped, and he dropped.

But that has turned into a disagreement between two former No. 1 players, Roddick and Marat Safin, and other players have piped in over the hot topic on tour now. And it all shows how difficult this scheduling mess will be to clear up.

Injury List Grows, Players Want Change

On Monday, Andy Roddick spoke out against the ATP for the lack of a normal tennis offseason. On Tuesday, he retired from the Shanghai Masters with knee pains.

Fast-forward to Thursday, the injury count at Shanghai has grown to seven after just four days of play. The latest additions are Gael Monfils of France and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who retired from their matches earlier today.

The Shanghai injury list includes reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, Tommy Haas, Jose Acasuso and Mischa Zverev. Not included are Roger Federer (fatigue) and Andy Murray (wrist), who opted out of the tournament before it began to recuperate.

Del Potro Joins Shanghai Injury List

SHANGHAI (AP) -- Reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro retired from the Shanghai Masters with a wrist injury Wednesday, adding to the mounting injury toll at the event.

The third-seeded Argentine was trailing Austria's Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 2-1 in his second-round match when he retired with an injury to his right wrist.

Del Potro said that he suffered from similar wrist tendinitis earlier this year.

Hellish Schedule Breaking Down Players

Andy Roddick warned us. Everyone has been warning us, really, with words or with pain, or meltdowns.

But on Monday, Roddick complained that the tennis schedule is too rough on the players. He called the requirements of the tour "ridiculous," and warned that the short-sightedness of the rules-makers might cut short the careers of stars.

Roddick Retires from Shanghai Masters With Knee Pains

SHANGHAI (AP) -- Andy Roddick was forced to retire with left knee pain while leading Stanislas Wawrinka 4-3 Tuesday in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.

Roddick, who limped into the post-match news conference, quit after wasting a break point.

"I just felt I pushed off, and then Michael (Novotny, ATP trainer) came on court and did some tests and advised that it probably wasn't worth the risk," Roddick said.

2010 Davis Cup Draw Produces Potential First-Round Thrillers

GENEVA (AP) -- Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could face each other in the first round of next year's Davis Cup after Spain drew Switzerland on Wednesday.

Federer and Nadal, the top two players, have never met in the Davis Cup.

"We have to accept how the draw is. We'll try to beat them in Spain," Switzerland captain Severin Luthi said. "For sure that's one of the toughest draws we can have."

The Ghost of Roddick Past Strikes

NEW YORK -- This one is going to hurt more than Wimbledon. Andy Roddick said he didn't know what it would mean, not yet, not just 25 minutes after losing to John Isner Saturday night in the third round of the U.S. Open.

You fall way behind, two sets to love, and then courageously fight all the way back, never give up, get the momentum, and then in the end, the crucial fifth-set tiebreaker ...

You lose.

That was the night. Was it Roddick's career? The New Andy Roddick has been playing much better, but in the end, he's still not winning the big ones. It seemed like a matter of time.

And then this.
