Venus Wins After Ivanovic Concedes

Venus WilliamsWIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Venus Williams advanced to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon when opponent Ana Ivanovic retired one game into the second set Monday.

Williams, seeking her sixth Wimbledon title, led 6-1, love-1 when Ivanovic called it quits.

Ivanovic took a 10-minute break during the first game of the second set to have her left thigh taped by a trainer. She returned for two more points, but after hitting a service winner to take the game, she began crying as she walked to her chair and told the umpire she was retiring.

The Day Michael Jackson Died: Athletes Mourn Loss of Music Legend

The Day Michael Jackson Died
I heard Michael Jackson died at approximately 5:30 PM ET. Hours later, I still don't think it's fully hit me. This was the man I idolized growing up as a kid ... I watched Moonwalker about 80 times on VHS (Joe Pesci was the villain). I once furiously outbid someone $159 for a replica Beat It jacket with 13 zippers. I actually have an 8x10 glossy of Billie Jean Michael taped next to my bedroom door.

Everyone -- from celebrities to sports stars to ordinary people -- had their way of trying to feel connected to the King of Pop. In his mere presence, fans have fainted and needed medical attention. So when news broke that Jackson had passed away, the reverberations on social media sites like Twitter were immense. Outspoken wide receiver Chad Ochocinco even went on to tweet "this is just as sad as 9/11" and then tried to play damage control after his offensive comment.

After the jump, read the emotional reactions from current and former athletes.

Roddick Strong in First-Round Win

Andy RoddickWIMBLEDON, England (June 23) -- Andy Roddick's quest for a Wimbledon breakthrough is off to a strong start. Roddick committed just nine unforced errors in the match, compared to 46 winners and 20 aces. He lost just eight points on his first serve.

Nadal, Safina Top Seeds at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal and Dinara SafinaWIMBLEDON, England (June 17) -- Rafael Nadal's French Open stumble failed to strip him of the world No. 1 ranking, and it won't cost him the top seed at Wimbledon either.

Nadal, the tournament's defending champion, was seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon on Wednesday. Top-ranked Dinara Safina, who lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open final, earned the women's No. 1 seed.

There were no big surprises when the All England Club announced the seedings for the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, which opens June 22. The draw will be released Friday.

Gael Monfils at the French Open: Jump, Slide, Dive, 'I Go For It'

Gael Monfils delivered the best highlight of this year's French Open on Saturday when he slid for one shot and dove for another to win a point on his way to defeating Austria's Jürgen Melzer, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Federer Smacks Nadal for Madrid Title

FedererEntering Sunday, world No. 2 Roger Federer had lost five straight matches to top-ranked Rafael Nadal, including epic five-set title matches at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The streak looked a safe bet to roll to six in the Madrid Tennis Masters final -- a meeting that took place on a clay court, Nadal's specialty, and in front of his Spanish countrymen.

Federer had other ideas. He overwhelmed the home-standing Nadal for an impressive 6-4, 6-4 victory. It was his first win over Nadal since the Barclays ATP World Tour in November of 2007.

"He was simply better than me," Nadal said.

Andy Roddick Wins, Confirms He Isn't Missing Dubai Because of Fake Hernia

Andy Roddick won his first tournament of the year on Sunday. He beat some guy 7-5, 7-5 for his 27th career victory, third most among active players.

That isn't really the story here. Roddick is, and I won't deny this, my favorite professional athlete alive. Not because he wins all the time or anything like that, just because he seems like one of the few "real" people in sports. He doesn't bullshit us. He tells it like it is.

That is why his decision to skip the Dubai Tennis Championships after Israeli player Shahar Peer was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates (that Lisa Olson brilliantly wrote about here) was so, well, Andy. After his win today, Roddick gave the media another soundbite that is sure to be around for a while when someone asked if the real reason he was missing Dubai was because of a hernia.

Even on Spirited Court, True Bravery Remains Tough to Come By

Courage is in the eye of the beholder. Rational folks will agree that Andy Roddick has it coursing through his veins, after he became the only player to do the right thing by refusing to play in the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships because of the tournament's reprehensible discriminatory policy.

Venus Williams took a swig from the courage chalice, too, when, upon receiving the Dubai championship trophy Saturday, she spoke about Shahar Peer, the Israeli player who was refused entry by the United Arab Emirates on the eve of one of the world's most lucrative tournaments. In front of the Dubai crowd, Williams referenced Peer's plight, and later expounded on her decision to speak publicly about sport's political hot potato, when a simple curtsy and "thank you" would have made for a safer exit.
