Celtics Have a New Employee No. 8

Not only has Stephon Marbury officially signed with the Celtics, he may even be in uniform for Friday night's game against the Pacers. But forget all that nonsense. What's really important is what number he'll be wearing, and that came out in the press release too. I know Marbury has his own line of shoes and everything (hard to forget when it's tattooed on his head), but adidas should really sign the man and remake this classic commercial, featuring Antoine Walker describing his job as Boston's original "employee number eight."

Jason Richardson Accused of, but Not Arrested for, Drunk Driving

What is this, DUI Month in the NBA or something? We had former player Charles Barkley get taken in last week, and Antoine Walker got popped earlier this morning. Now comes word from the Arizona Republic that Jason Richardson was accused by police of driving under the influence, during a traffic stop back on December 21st.

This is where the Richardson incident differs from those involving Barkley and Walker. The report says that the officer merely accused J-Rich of driving under the influence, but didn't arrest him for it. He was stopped at 2:48 in the morning, after the Suns beat the Nuggets earlier that evening, and was "cited and released."

Antoine Walker Arrested for Drunk Driving

Antoine WalkerAntoine Walker has been unemployed since the Grizzlies bought out his contract in December, and, well, you know what they say about idle hands. With nothing to occupy his time, he was arrested early this morning on suspicion of drunk driving:
Walker was driving a black Mercedes without the lights on when he was pulled over at 5:39 a.m., according to the arrest report. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and wrote in the report that Walker had a sleepy look on his face. He refused a breathalyzer test.
Walker has always carried a fair amount of baggage due to a questionable attitude and poor conditioning, and now that he has a DUI on his record, there's even less incentive for another team to give him a shot, at least not this year while his arrest is fresh in everyone's minds.

Even though he's still just 32 years old, there's a good chance his arrest will signal the end of his career. He hasn't appeared in a regular season game since last February, spending the second half of last season in exile on Minnesota's bench and the first couple of months this year on Memphis' sideline.

While it's possible he could get his act together and make an eventual comeback (if Darius Miles can revive his career, anybody can), he's clearly not serious about making the effort just yet.

Antoine Walker, Anyone? Employee No. 8 Waived by Memphis

Just as we receive word that one old-timer is interested in coming back, another becomes available. The Memphis Grizzlies today waived Antoine Walker, after coming to a buyout agreement on the remainder of his contract. I know what you're thinking: Antoine Walker was on the Grizzlies? Yes, yes he was. Although it was in name only, as he didn't play in a single game for them this season.

Walker was part of the eight-player draft day deal in June that ended up sending O.J. Mayo to Memphis, and saw the Grizzlies send Kevin Love and Mike Miller to Minnesota. Now that Walker's available, the question is, can he still play?

I'm guessing Walker wouldn't have bothered taking a lesser amount than his contract guaranteed him if he was done as a player -- that's just bad business. So assuming he can still contribute something, where might he end up?

Darius Miles Arrives in Memphis as Antoine Walker Leaves

Antoine WalkerIn case you weren't paying attention, the Grizzlies rolled the dice on Darius Miles on Saturday, giving the oft-injured forward a non-guaranteed contract. He needs to serve a 10-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy before playing, but assuming all goes to plan, he should be eligible to take the court on Jan. 4 against the Mavericks.

It's not a complete surprise that Miles was signed -- he looked decent in the preseason and nearly made the Celtics' roster before getting caught in a numbers game. His suspension certainly scared a few times off, but what do the Grizzlies have to lose? GM Chris Wallace explained the rationale behind the move:
"We need to find more veterans -- not just so much for leadership but for production on the court. We need guys who have been there a little bit."
It's a little odd to see Miles regarded as a veteran leader, but at 27, he's older than all but a few of his new teammates. At worst, he could serve as a cautionary tale for how fleeting NBA fame really is.

If Wallace was really so desperate for a veteran presence, though, why is the team buying out Antoine Walker? The Grizzlies acquired Walker from the Timberwolves over the summer in the O.J. Mayo/Kevin Love swap but never intended to use him -- in fact, he hasn't appeared in a regular season game since last February.

But even though he's been a casualty of youth movements on two different teams, let's not forget that he's still only 32 years old -- too old to be part of the long-term solution but hardly decrepit. Is Miles, a guy who hasn't played since 2006 due to a knee injury that had independent league doctors convinced he'd never take the court again, a better bet for production than Walker? I don't see it.

One More Reason for People to Doubt the Timberwolves: Jefferson Has MCL Sprain

The Timberwolves somehow went from being the spunky underrated team with lots of young pieces to the overrated, likely-to-regress squad in inside of a year, despite jettisoning Antoine Walker, Marko Jaric, and adding Kevin Love and Mike Miller. Go figure.

The haters have one more reason to pile on the squad, though, as Al Jefferson will enter the year banged up. Jefferson had an MRI yesterday and it revealed an MCL sprain in his right knee which will keep him out up to the next three weeks. Good thing they're not a young team trying to get new pieces to gel together before the season starts. Whoops.

It's a minor injury though, and the young star should be back to full strength before the season starts, unlike some people who will remain nameless but who's name is synonymous with a Japanese grill. And with Mike Miller an upgrade at shooting guard, Kevin Love and the outlet pass of doom, Randy Foye back to full strength, and the rest of the youngsters with another year together, there's no room to think the Wolves will regress from, if not exceed last year's win total. Still, it's not the way you want to start a year.

What? It's the slow season. We can't only talk about drugs or the Star Spangled Banner.

Iranian Joins Bizarre Memphis Frontcourt

After receiving pushback from the federal government for visa issues, Iranian center Hamed Haddadi (or Ehadadi or Hadadi, depending on the source; the league is going with "Haddadi") got permission to join the NBA, and Memphis has signed him. It's not known whether it's a guaranteed deal, based on the Grizzles' press release.

Will Haddadi help? Memphis has a weird, weird frontcourt. Marc Gasol played well but not amazing in Spain last season, and will be a rookie. Darko Milicic is ... Darko Milicic. Hakim Warrick is a livewire who will still be raw when he's a 12-year veteran. Darrell Arthur is only 20 years old, and couldn't play center in Billy Knight's dreams. And then there's that shooting guard masquerading as an occasional power forward Antoine Walker. Oodles of fun.

I don't know what Marc Iavaroni will be thinking in a month. Darko and Warrick looks right, but if I'm a Grizz fan I'm praying Gasol and Arthur develop quickly. Where does Haddadi fit into that? I imagine on "the bench" is the right answer, though we'd all love to be surprised.

Hold the Mayo -- Kevin Love and OJ Are on the Move as Griz and TWolves Go Blockbuster

All the time we spent fretting over who the Timberwolves would take with the third overall pick (hey, you spend five hours live blogging the entire NBA draft and you're allowed to come up with headlines like that too, okay?) is all for naught because of a deal that broke shortly after the draft.

Minnesota and the Memphis Grizzlies have apparently made a monster swap -- a far bigger deal than that new Minny logo -- that revolves around their two first round picks. The Timberwolves will receive the draft rights of Kevin Love, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins and Mike Miller. In exchange, the Grizz will receive O.J. Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner.

Obviously, Mayo and Love are the two big components in this deal. Kevin McHale has made no secret of his Love-love leading up to the draft, but knew he had to take Mayo in the third slot, because of their draft position. However, the addition of Miller is pretty ridiculous, as is the dumping of Jaric's contract (although the loss of his ladyfriend Lima certainly hurts).

For the Grizzlies, they get Mayo, of course, and he could be a pretty nice shooting guard addition beside Mike Conley in the backcourt. The Grizzlies have also been trying to dump Cardinal's contract ever since they gave their last good tradable piece away moved Pau Gasol to the Lakers. Buckner, Collins and Walker are essentially throw-ins to make everything work.

Antoine Walker Wants to Be Relevant Again

Antoine WalkerNo matter how you look at it, this has been Antoine Walker's worst season as a pro, but he's hoping there's still time to salvage it. After spending most of the year coming off the bench for the worst team in the league, he's trying (though not very hard) to negotiate a buyout in hopes of landing on someone's roster in time to be eligible for the playoffs:
The 31-year-old asked to be dealt to another team before the deadline last Thursday afternoon, but that didn't happen. So Walker has been hoping this week the Wolves will buyout his contract in time to allow him to clear waivers and join a playoff contender by Saturday. That would make him eligible for the postseason roster.

"We're trying to figure out a number that's fair for both sides," Walker said Tuesday before Minnesota's game against the Utah Jazz.

Walker, who is making $8.5 million this season and is scheduled to draw $9.3 million next season, does not want to give up much of his guaranteed money. The Wolves have already coughed up millions to buy out Juwan Howard and Troy Hudson within the past year, however, and are not eager to do that again.
Two thoughts: 1) I'm amused that Walker thought someone would actually want to trade for him; 2) If Walker really wanted out, he'd give up some money. I'm guessing that the only reason the Wolves have held onto him this long is because they know they'll be able to recoup some of their value back by dealing his expiring contract this summer, the only time he'd actually have trade value. So why would the Wolves pass on that opportunity and simply give him an advance on the rest of his contract? It makes no sense. That said, Walker hasn't been active the last three games, which gives the impression that something might be in the works. Stay tuned.
