When the Browns signed Antwan Peek it was one of those low-risk moves that could have a big payoff. Peek was considered a very intriguing pass rusher coming out of college. He never lived up to those expectations in Houston, but the Browns signed him with the hope that a change of scenery would help. If it does, the Browns have found their replacement for the aging Willie McGinest. If not, it won't cost much to find out. What they didn't count on is that Peek would get his chance so soon. McGinest will miss the next six weeks thanks to a back injury. With backup Matt Stewart going on the injured reserve with a torn labrum Peek needs to be good--the Browns don't have many other options. Chaun Thompson will also move from inside to outside to help give some depth.
So we'll get to see lots of Peek over the preseason and during at least the first couple of weeks of the season. If he shows some promise it's not hard to see him replacing the 36-year-old McGinest before too long. He's signed to a three-year deal so the Browns have a hope that he fits into their long-term plans.
The initial reports on Peek's pass rushing ability are pretty good as Ryan Tucker has been raving about him.
"I've played against a lot of guys, and he's got it all, baby," Tucker said. "He's a good one. I'm looking forward to seeing him on third down (against other teams)."
