We knew team owner Arte Moreno wasn't happy about it, and it's probably safe to say that the rest of the Angels organization isn't exactly thrilled about the whole Gary Matthews situation, either. Thusly, Gary and his agent have decided to, well, apologize:
"Gary regrets the distraction this story has caused the Angels' front office, the manager and his staff, teammates and fans," Matthews' agent, Scott Leventhal, said in a statement. In other words: "Gosh, sorry. Boy, is this embarrassing. Anyway, I can't really talk about it anymore. Sorry.""However, given the ongoing investigation, he simply cannot discuss this matter until appropriate to do so. Gary sincerely apologizes for this distraction and is determined to resolve this issue in a timely manner."
Also, a word of advice: if you're not guilty of anything, why apologize, even for the distraction? An apology insinuates that you had something to do with creating the distraction in the first place.
Oh, and one more: if you're really going to apologize for something, doing so through an agent is probably not the most sincere. At least have him prepare a statement for you, so you can read it front of a camera or something. Jeez.
