INDIANAPOLIS -- On his tippy toes, he might be 5-10, very easy to lose in the enormity of a football stadium where faces look like matrix dots and crowd noise drifts to the ozone. But no one strikes a larger pose in the Midwest today than Tom Izzo, public defender of the Big Ten's battered self-esteem. If trends and hipness start on both coasts in America, college basketball in the heartland also has been taking on an irrelevant, plodding look, to the point I stopped watching.

And I live in Chicago.

The Mountain West is as major conference that nobody wants to admit is a major conference. The Mountain West thoroughly embarrassed the Pac-10 in football during the regular season and Utah proved that it was the best team on the field after walloping Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. To make matters worse, the trouble-making conference wants to propose a college football playoff.

The NCAA wasn't about to take that lying down.

Congratulations Arizona, you are now a mid-major program. That is the only conclusion after Arizona canceled a home-and-home with North Carolina. Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood tried to put a happy-spin on the announcement, saying that it was a friendly agreement between Roy Williams between and Lute Olsen.

Livengood obviously didn't want the new coach to be burdened with an automatic loss next season. (Or any of that stuff you see in the picture on the right.) Now the troubled program is going to look to add "guarantee games" against lesser opponents, looking for some easy wins.

The only problem is, Arizona is more Washington Generals than they are Harlem Globetrotters right now. How low are they thinking of scheduling because many mid-major programs such as St. Mary's, Santa Clara, San Diego, BYU and Cal State would love to take a guarantee game to come to Arizona. Especially after that debacle against Alabama-Birmingham. You can already imagine Livengood trying to hook up a mid-major opponent in the future.

Last week at Texas Motor Speedway, we heard plenty about how Jeff Gordon didn't have a good-handling car in the Saturday practice sessions leading up to the Dickie's 500.

And if Jeff Gordon wants any chance at re-capturing that Nextel Cup point lead and his fifth series championship, the No. 24 team is indeed going to have to make amends on how well they get the car dialed in.

"We're doing a great job on Friday qualifying and we need to do that again here today and next week in Homestead. But Saturday getting prepared for the race, we got to do a little bit better job," said Gordon Friday before qualifying at Phoenix.

Starting positions haven't been a problem for Gordon in the past few weeks. Gordon started second at Texas last week and at Atlanta two weeks back, he rolled off eighth. He starts third Sunday at Phoenix.

In each race, Gordon has finished seventh after battling a race car that often wanted to find contact with the SAFER barrier instead of with victory lane. Unfortunately for Gordon fans, the strong effort to salvage a decent finish has been significantly trumped by two-straight wins by teammate and Chase contender Jimmie Johnson.

It's definitely not lost on Gordon that the Saturday program needs to improve immediately at Phoenix and next week at Homestead if the No. 24 team wants any shot at Jimmie Johnson.

"We've got to step it up. There's no hiding that and I hope we can pull that off right here in Phoenix," said Gordon.

Carl Edwards has quietly allowed the brouhaha with fellow Roush driver Matt Kenseth to slowly disappear in the media in good fashion.

Quietly enough, in fact, that he won the pole at Phoenix and no really seemed to care -- nor bring the topic up. After all, there are two races left in the "Hendrick Motorsports Trophy Deciding Circus" and three former winners of the Indianapolis 500 are in the show.

But yes, Edwards did in fact win the pole with a lap of 132.773mph. It's his first of the season and guarantees the No. 99 Ford a spot in the 2008 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona. Edwards bested Martin Truex Jr. for the top spot by just three one-thousandths of a second.

"I told them after that lap, I said, 'That was a blast.' The guys did a great job with the car -- everybody," said Edwards.

The pole for Edwards was his first since he started on the point in the 2005 Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

As for "The Jeff and Jimmie Show", Jeff Gordon will start right behind Edwards in third while Johnson will roll off the grid from the sixth position.

The list of past Indianapolis 500 winners is indeed well-represented in the Nextel Cup grid. Juan Pablo Montoya starts 14th, Sam Hornish Jr. made his first Nextel Cup race and starts 26th and fellow '500' winner Jacques Villeneuve lines up 27th.

The going home list includes all three Michael Waltrip Racing cars, A.J. Allmendinger, John Andretti and Ward Burton.

USC 80, (12) Arizona 73. A road conference loss to a quality opponent is not the end of the world. If course, two losses in a row and three of the last four, however ... that might be something to worry about. So they're either in real trouble with that road game at UCLA looming, or it's a chance to get their balls back. You can look at it either way you'd like. This game was decided with an early second-half 15-3 USC run, triggered by Nick Young. He finished with 80 and 8 on the night.

(13) Nevada 85, Fresno State 75. Nick Fazekas returns to freak us, once again. There was no readjustment period, there was no "working him back into the offense," there was just continued Nevada dominance, and typical Fazekas brilliance. He finished with 20 and 10, in just 25 minutes. Sidekick and bonafide star of his own, Marcellus Kemp, had 22 for the 'Pack, 15 of which came in the second half.

Northern Iowa 75, Missouri State 65. Missouri State battle back from a 13-point deficit to tie the game with 3:01 left ... but couldn't find the energy to close it out. 15 and 12 for Grant Stout, and 10 and 10 for Eric Coleman ... the Panthers big men do it well. So the Panthers get a huge road win in the conference, leaving them just a ½ game back of Creighton. Missouri State's just 1 game back themselves.

(17) Duke 62, Wake Forest 40. Duke did it with defense last night, sweating Wake Forest into a 33% shooting night. Of course, doing that to Wake Forest is less of a challenge than doing it to, oh I don't know ... Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech. Josh McRoberts had a nice stat line for Duke: 11 points, 8 boards, 6 assists. Greg Paulus was good, too, with 17 points, 4 assists, and perhaps most importantly ... just 1 turnover. Top 25 Scoreboard
