UEFA Bans Arsenal Cheat Eduardo

Much of what we all detest about modern soccer exists because the authorities who control the game do nothing. Clubs whose fans sing racist songs are slapped on the wrist, cheaters who dupe the referee escape without penalty (and are celebrated in some cultures), the same wealthy teams repeatedly run roughshod over the opposition and Major League Soccer continues to allow every club to play in all-white uniforms.

Now, Michel Platini is riding to the rescue. When it's all said and done, the French legend and UEFA president may be known as much for what he's accomplished as an administrator as for what he did in central midfield. He has spoken out against the oligarchy in European club football and opened the Champions League to a wider variety of teams. Then on Tuesday, his organization handed down a brave and perhaps historic decision -- banning Arsenal's Eduardo for last week's embarrassing diving spectacle against Celtic.

Wenger Downplays Real Madrid Link

After another trophy-less season, the natives are getting restless at Arsenal. That said, it seems the Gunners will still have longtime manager Arsene Wenger calling the shots as the Frenchman dismissed a rumored move to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Wenger caught some heat at the latest shareholders meeting and the rumor-mongering Spanish media apparently attempted to create a link between the coach and the Madrid superclub, especially if Florentino Perez -- the architect of the Galaticos era is re-elected as Real president.

Update: Follow second leg of their Champions League semifinal match.

There are big games, and then there are big games. It's safe to classify Wednesday's Champions League semifinal between English powers Manchester United and Arsenal in the latter category. Oddly enough this is the first time the two rivals will meet in European competition.

Manchester United, the defending champions, haven't lost in the Champions League in 23 matches, which is a record. It's also the 37th meeting between managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman owns a slim advantage in the wins category at 14-13.

The action kicks off in Manchester at 2:45 PM ET, and we'll be blogging shortly beforehand.
