Gaudio Builds Wake Forest Legacy One Defensive Stop at a Time

Were Wake Forest ever to erect its own coaching Mount Rushmore, exactly two faces, Bones McKinney and Skip Prosser, would qualify for a place in oversized granite. Every one else would get patted down for so much as trying to get into the souvenir shop.

McKinney, who led the Deacons to their only Final Four appearance in 1962, was the perfect confluence of coaching and charm. Had the State Department opted to have McKinney oversee that Cold War business, he might've brought the two sides together and had Brezhnev telling knock-knock jokes.

Prosser, who led the Deacons to their only No. 1 ranking in school history and a record 27 wins, was a larger-than-the-sidelines, self-described "renaissance man," some parts Neitzsche, some parts Nitschke.

ACC 'Hot or Not' Power Rankings: Week 2

One man's humble attempt to rank the ACC teams based on only two games:

1. Florida State
- I know they looked bad against Troy and have no running game, but they beat Miami on the road and will stay number one until someone proves otherwise.

2. Miami - Lost to FSU, but still have more talent than any other ACC team right now.

3. Georgia Tech - Almost sprung the upset against the Irish, but 'almost' only gets you third place in the rankings.

4. Virginia Tech - QB Sean Glennon still has a lot to prove, but the Hokies make their living off of Beamerball, defense and the running game.

5. Boston College - Beat Clemson, but not yet proven enough to crack the top four.

6. Clemson - More talent than the schools ranked below them, but a loss to BC drops them down to fifth.

Note: I'd be fine listing the next six teams in any order since no one from this group has shown much to date.

7. North Carolina - The Heels are still looking for consistency but are a few turnovers away from being 1-1 against a strong opening schedule.

8. NC State - Played poorly in a win over I-AA Appalachian State and looked bad in a loss to MAC opponent Akron.

9. Maryland - It's not time to "Fear the Turtle" until they play someone of note.

10. Wake Forest - Wake had more promise before losing their starting QB and getting lucky against Duke.

11. Virginia - Lost big to Pitt and needed a missed extra point in overtime to beat Wyoming.

12. Duke
- I almost felt bad the way Duke lost to Wake Forest...almost. They'll stay at the bottom of the list until they win a game.
