Packers Rookie Raji Out Sunday Night

The Green Bay Packers need all their key defensive players to stay healthy. Most of them failed to do that last year, and too many important guys missed significant time.

After a generally fortunate preseason in terms of health, the Packers were dealt a blow in their final practice game at Tennessee. Rookie defensive lineman B.J. Raji, who had been seeing time at both end and nose tackle in the Packers' new 3-4 defense, went down with an ankle sprain. That injury will keep Raji out of Sunday night's game against the Bears.

Green Bay Packers 2009 Season Preview: No Excuses Anymore

Packers quarterback Aaron RodgersTraining camps have wrapped up, the NFL season is right around the corner, and it's still hot as sin outside. But instead of cooling you off with a warm island song, FanHouse break out ye old heat check for our 2009 NFL Season Previews. " We'll rate each club in 5 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Injuries are not an excuse. It's also not permissible to point fingers at guys on the other side of the ball when your team has problems. No one in Green Bay will do this, despite the way things went down last year. The Packers lost eight of their ten games by a combined total of 30 points. Despite this, no one in the locker room pinned the blame on the three-ring circus in training camp, major injuries on defense, or anything else.

Bills Present Challenge for Packers

GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- Typically, it's the third preseason game when you see starters get the most playing time. Since the Buffalo Bills are playing five games instead of four, they only expect to use their starters into the second quarter at Lambeau FIeld.

The Packers should use their top players for around 20-25 snaps Saturday night at Lambeau Field. That should even out fairly well. When the Bills have the ball, the Packers will face something they aren't used to seeing.

Packers Set to Show New Defense

For the Green Bay Packers, Saturday's preseason opener against Cleveland is the start of a new beginning. The Browns, meanwhile, just hope to take a step toward figuring out a starting quarterback.

When the two meet at Lambeau Field, the only thing that is known is that the Packers will play a live game for the first time under new defensive coordinator Dom Capers. In the short time that the starters play, and in the normally-bland environment that preseason games against regular-season opponents can create, what should Packer fans look for?

Raji Finally Set to Sign With Packers

First-round pick BJ Raji will sign with the Packers, ending a 12-day holdout. For Packers fans, it probably felt like closer to a month. The training camp absence of first-round draft pick BJ Raji lasted nearly two weeks, likely cost Raji what appeared to be a surefire starting spot along the Packers' defensive line, and irritated fans around Wisconsin.

Raji is now prepared to report to training camp. The former Boston College defensive lineman has agreed to a deal with the Packers, reports Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Fantasy Football Team Preview: Packers

Aaron RodgersWith Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.

Meet The ...
The team that happily doesn't have to wonder if Brett Favre is coming to camp. Following a future hall of famer and face of the franchise isn't east. But, Aaron Rodgers make it look that way. In his first full year, Rodgers started all 16 games and threw for 4,038 yards and 28 touchdowns. Rodgers spread the love to two 1,000 yard receivers in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver and enjoyed a 1,203 yard campaign from his running back Ryan Grant, who battled through injuries and a somewhat slow start to the season. The key players from 2008 are still around heading into 2009 and there's no reason to think Rodgers shouldn't grow as a quarterback and the rest of the crew around him benefit from his experience.

Patriots Stockpile Picks

Who moved to the head of the NFL class during the draft? Find out with FanHouse's team-by-team 2009 Draft Grades.

No team enjoys wheeling and dealing on draft weekend quite like the New England Patriots. The 2009 draft was no exception, as they made a series of moves resulting in 12 picks, and the stockpiling of even more selections in 2010.

As a result, the moves left the Patriots with no first-round selection for the first time since 2000, which is also the same year they selected some guy named Tom Brady.

Packers' B.J. Raji Says He Did Test Positive -- In College

Packers No. 1 pick B.J. Raji admits to having smoked marijuana while playing at Boston College.B.J. Raji, the Green Bay Packers' first-round draft pick and No. 9 pick overall, confirmed yesterday that he did indeed test positive for marijuana while a student at Boston College -- but not, as SI.com and others reported some weeks ago, at the NFL scouting combine. From the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

The distinction between the tests is important for a practical reason because if Raji had tested positive at the combine, he'd automatically be in the NFL's substance-abuse program and subject to a four-game suspension if he tested positive again. But because his only positive test was in college, he enters the NFL with a clean slate.

The distinction is important for other reasons, too.
