Rampage Jackson in His Own World

As Quinton "Rampage" Jackson prepares to fight Keith Jardine in the main event at UFC 95, he says he's not thinking of anything except getting ready for the fight.

When I asked Jackson on a call today whether he watches other fighters and tries to emulate them, he said that for the most part, he does not.

"I'm in my own little world," Jackson said. "I go to fights, but I don't pay attention to names or anything like that. I'm a fighter and I focus on my own fights."

MMA Top 10 Lightweights: 1-B.J. Penn, 2-Shinya Aoki, 3-Sean Sherk

B.J. Penn was thoroughly manhandled by Georges St. Pierre when he tried to move up to welterweight at UFC 94, but he's still the best lightweight in mixed martial arts, and he has a big lightweight title fight against Kenny Florian coming up this summer.

On my list of the 10 best lightweights in MMA, Penn is first and Florian is fourth. Second on the list is Shinya Aoki, who is about to follow in Penn's footsteps and try moving up to welterweight, in Aoki's case to participate in Dream's upcoming welterweight tournament. The full lightweight Top 10 is below.

MMA Has Made Strides, Still Has Long Way to Go in Mainstream Sports Media

I'm back home after spending a week in Tampa covering the Super Bowl, and that means I was surrounded all week by hundreds of sports journalists representing newspapers, magazines and TV networks. I was there to cover football, but I also spent a little bit of time on the mixed martial arts beat, and I came away realizing how far MMA still has to go before it can really be considered a mainstream sport.

Georges St. Pierre Defeated B.J. Penn in UFC 94 -- With Help From Vaseline?

During his dominant win over B.J. Penn at UFC 94, Georges. St. Pierre appeared to have petroleum jelly applied to his shoulders and back by Phil Nurse, one of his cornermen.

That would be a violation of MMA rules, and it has a lot of UFC fans abuzz.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Fedor? Silva? GSP? Who's on Top?

The UFC has spent the last year really hammering home the idea that Anderson Silva is the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world. So it was a little surprising that at the end of the UFC 94 broadcast, the UFC's in-house announcers were referring to Georges St. Pierre as the world's best MMA fighter.

It was also a little surprising that UFC commentator Joe Rogan even mentioned the name of Fedor Emelianenko when he addressed the subject of the top pound-for-pound fighters. So who's really on top? My own list is below.

The UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre made a strong statement Saturday night in Las Vegas, dominating lightweight champion B.J. Penn at UFC 94 in one of the biggest fights in the history of MMA.

St. Pierre battered and bruised Penn throughout the fight, and Penn's corner decided after the fourth round that it wasn't safe for him to keep fighting, so he didn't answer the bell for the fifth. On my scorecard, St. Pierre won the first three rounds 10-9 and the fourth round 10-8.

When a fight is as highly anticipated Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn, there's not much a weigh-in can do to raise the hype level. With the MGM Grand Garden Arena filled to the hilt with fans, the fighters took to the scales Friday night before UFC 94 in Las Vegas.

Both St. Pierre and Penn made weight, with Penn actually weighing in two pounds under the 170-pound limit. "I'm ready, I've got nothing else to say," the no-nonsense Penn said. "Let's fight, let's go."
