Ballhawkin': The QB-Sacking Rookie

Think IDP leagues are the way to go? Then Ballhawkin' is for you. Here, we pick out a few Individual Defensive Players that could have huge weeks and are possibly sitting in your free-agent pool.

From last week's column, David Hawthorne turned in an 11-tackle (10 solo) performance and is now owned in about a quarter of Fleaflicker leagues. Sadly, we won't be featuring him anymore, but he's still a great add if available in your league.

Also in last week's column, Jairus Byrd picked off another ball, his eighth interception of his rookie campaign. The Bills found themselves a great centerfielder for years to come. Teammate Bryan Scott posted a 10-tackle day (all solo) from the LB position.

Ballhawkin': Tampa Bay Talent

Half of last week's picks were huge. One has emerged as an every-week start, an LB1 that fell into a great opportunity due to injury. We're picking him again this week, so more on him later.

The other two hits were both Buccaneers. Tanard Jackson is the best IDP DB in the league, on average, yet his early-season suspension has likely buried him in your free agency pool. He's managed an interception in three of his four games, returning two for TDs (including one in Week 9). Stylez G. White abused the poor Packers line for 1.5 sacks.

Can we unearth more unknowns this week? Let's find out.

Ballhawkin': Justin Durant's Sixteen

I'm hoping you IDP leaguers read last week's column and knew to pick up Jaguars linebacker Justin Durant. Returning from injury, Durant was amazingly available in 82 percent of Fleaflicker leagues last week, which made him an easy feature for our column. Sixteen total tackles (12 solo) later, Durant has added a solid 10 percentage points to his ownership total. For the remaining seven-tenths of you, what are you waiting for?

Other notable features from last week: Andra Davis with nine total tackles and a sack, George Wilson and his 15 total tackles (jump off the train in the second half, though), Dashon Goldson with 10 total tackles (nine solo). Definitely roll with the 20%-owned Goldson and 10%-owned Davis again this week.

Ballhawkin': Pierce Shines, Durant Back

Our lead linebacker in last week's column was Antonio Pierce, who in successive weeks had seven, eight and nine total tackles in three weeks heading into last week's game. He continued the pattern in Week 7, recording 10 total tackles while having a great day for anyone brave enough to start him.

Ballhawkin': Injuries Mounting

This was a bad week to be an IDP player, as several key guys suffered season-ending injuries. Browns LB D'Qwell Jackson is out for the year with a shoulder injury, and two rookies are going to attempt to step in and fill the void. There's things to like about both David Veikune and Kaluka Maiava, but neither should be on your IDP roster just yet. Also bowing out for the season was Antwan Odom, who exploded onto the IDP scene in Weeks 1 and 2 but fell precipitously after that.

Ballhawkin': Jared Allen Is a Monster

After Antwan Odom's monster day against the Packers, it's become pretty clear that you must start your defensive ends against Green Bay. Not that anyone was benching Jared Allen in the first place. The Minnesota monster was unstoppable, sacking quarterback Aaron Rodgers 4.5 times while forcing a fumble and scoring a safety. Now that's the kind of performance that can win you the week on its own. Unfortunately, that offensive Packer offensive line has a bye this week, but there are other matchups to exploit.

Ballhawkin': Unknown Seahawk Emerges

With Lofa Tatupu battling a hamstring injury, the Seahawks started unheralded second-year player David Hawthorne at middle linebacker. All Hawthorne did was rack up 15 solo tackles, an assist on a tackle, and an interception against Jay Cutler and the Bears. With that kind of production and tackling ability, the Seahawks look to have found a potential starter down the road, and at the very least they've established great depth at the position. Hawthorne is a great spot-starter should Tatupu miss any more games.

Justin Durant had a great IDP game against the Cardinals, putting up nine total tackles and forcing a fumble for 13 points in my league. The rest of our picks for Week 2 were just average, and Tamba Hali was actually far worse than that, with a pass defensed being his only contribution to an IDP statline.

Ballhawkin': Cooper's Explosion

Those of you that picked up Stephen Cooper heading into Week 1 were treated to a pleasant surprise, as the San Diego linebacker notched 13 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two passes defended. In my league, he earned me 19 points, which was good enough for the top defensive performance of the week. Other great calls were Louis Delmas with 15 points, James Laurinaitis with 14 points, and E.J. Henderson with 9.5 points. I wasn't so lucky with Kerry Rhodes and Jason Taylor, although Taylor did get a sack in his game.

All IDP leagues are created differently. I have one that starts five defense guys from any position each week. I have one that starts two DLs, two LBs, two DBs, and two flex defenders each week. I have another with different settings than those two, but you get the picture. As such, it makes it extremely difficult to figure out who's going to be available in your league on a weekly basis.
