Minor League Spotlight: We Fly High, No Lie, You Know This (Brawlin'!)

Minor League Spotlight is MLB FanHouse's look into baseball's minor leagues. But you probably figured that out already.

Due to MLB's YouTube police, we've had to all but retire our "Basebrawls from the Day" running series. (Sad, really.) But thanks to two minor-league clubs that seem to really hate each other lately, we might be able to revive series just on clips of their fights alone.

What teams, you ask? The Kannapolis Intimidators and Greensboro Grasshoppers. Last week, benches cleared on Tuesday. And Thursday. And Friday.

Part of the Thursday debacle is provided for you above. This brawl got so out of hand that police had to take the field and so many players were ejected, umpires decided to reinstate some so the game could actually continue.

America's pastime: feel the rush, baby.

{HT: Home Run Derby.}

Basebrawls From The Day: Dipping Into The College Ranks

A look at some of baseball's old school scuffles ...

This series has been struggling as of late, namely because MLB has put the YouTube police out on many of its finest baseball fights. The only two MLB clips we had up have already been yanked from YouTube. (See here and here.) For shame. But fear not, lovers of a good brawl. The college game can provide them, too.

Case in point, here's a scuffle between UC Davis and Chico St. from 1998. (According to the user who uploaded it.) What's unique about this fight is the fact that it wasn't a beanball that plunked a dude and started the brawl; it was an altercation between a player sliding into home and the catcher.

It appears as if the Chico St. player reaches his hand up and slaps the mask off the UC Davis catcher as he slides into home. UC Davis' first baseman doesn't like it, gives the Chico St. player a bit of a chest bump, and it is on.

Don't miss the UC Davis catcher tossing a Chico St. hat back onto their side after the brawl. What a nice guy!

Basebrawls From the Day: International Pastime Edition

A look at some of baseball's old school scuffles ...

It's rare that we get to combine two of our features here at the MLB FanHouse, but today, we have a real treat for you.

Seen first via Bill Simmons' blog (seriously, that dude gets the best tips ever), here's a Basebrawl From the Day that happened in Japan. Not sure when exactly this went down, but judging by the uniforms, I'm going mid-80s. Anyone else have a guess (or just know)?

In any case, this isn't so much a brawl as it is a chase through a large baseball stadium, but it's brilliant nonetheless. Watch for the pitcher's face when he makes a very clear decision between fight or flight. Hint: FLIGHT.

Basebrawls from the Day: Cal's Streak Almost Ended

A look at some of baseball's old-school scuffles....

The date is June 6, 1993. We are at Camden Yards. Mike Mussina beans Bill Haselman and it is on like Donkey Kong.

Interesting note about this brawl: it nearly ended Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak. During the mayhem, he hurt his knee and it swelled so badly he told his wife he didn't think he was going to play the next day. But, we all know Cal stuck it out. What a trooper that man is.

This fight actually gets pretty out of hand and goes for a long time as far as baseball brawls are concerned -- around the 3:20 mark it really ramps up a notch. Also during the clip, one of the announcers gets pretty irate complaining that the cops aren't doing anything. Um, guy, it's a fight between over 50 people in a professional baseball game. Do you want them to start busting out the riot gear and tear gas? Because that's about the only way you can corral something like this. Relax buddy.

Our friend Jay Buhner
is in the mix here. Also, don't miss Randy Johnson's mullet!

Enjoy.

Basebrawls From The Day: George Bell Meets Mo Vaughn

A look at some of baseball's old-school scuffles....

The year was 1993 and Aaron Sele came in a little too high and tight on White Sox slugger George Bell. You know the drill from here. Bell takes offense, comes sprinting to the mound and tries to land a crushing right hand blow in Sele's face.

Problem is, Sele dodged the hook and well, let's just say Mo Vaughn's actions look a little more Ray Lewis than Sugar Ray Leonard.

BOOM.
