Childress, Vikings Survive Ravens Scare

Things seemed pretty elementary for the Minnesota Vikings through much of their game Sunday afternoon. They held a 14-0 lead over the Baltimore Ravens after a quarter, a 14-3 halftime lead, and then a 27-10 margin early in the fourth quarter -- margins that likely inspired tons of confidence for the Vikes. Who would have thought they would need to be bailed out by a missed field goal as time expired in order to escape with a victory?

Yet that's exactly what happened, because the Ravens, behind explosive plays from Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton, used just 11 offensive plays in 6:24 to score three touchdowns and take a 31-30 fourth-quarter lead. The Vikings did drive down and kick a field goal with 2:00 left in the game, which made the score -- the eventual final -- 33-31.

The Day Michael Jackson Died: Athletes Mourn Loss of Music Legend

The Day Michael Jackson Died
I heard Michael Jackson died at approximately 5:30 PM ET. Hours later, I still don't think it's fully hit me. This was the man I idolized growing up as a kid ... I watched Moonwalker about 80 times on VHS (Joe Pesci was the villain). I once furiously outbid someone $159 for a replica Beat It jacket with 13 zippers. I actually have an 8x10 glossy of Billie Jean Michael taped next to my bedroom door.

Everyone -- from celebrities to sports stars to ordinary people -- had their way of trying to feel connected to the King of Pop. In his mere presence, fans have fainted and needed medical attention. So when news broke that Jackson had passed away, the reverberations on social media sites like Twitter were immense. Outspoken wide receiver Chad Ochocinco even went on to tweet "this is just as sad as 9/11" and then tried to play damage control after his offensive comment.

After the jump, read the emotional reactions from current and former athletes.

Drew Rosenhaus: Bernard Berrian Would Be Unstoppable With Brett Favre

Brett Favre isn't going away. Just accept it, cope, and try to move on. Last week, Yahoo! Sports reported that the ole gunslinger was done. A day later, speculation suggested otherwise.

And now it's like every other offseason: Favre doesn't know what his NFL future holds, we'll spend months talking about it, and, ultimately, he'll return for one more season. Good times.

Harvin to Instantly Impact Fantasy Football Value of Vikings' Offense

Despite character concerns surfacing before the draft, Percy Harvin still found himself a first-round selection, and he fits rather nicely in the Minnesota Vikings' offense. The dynamic play-maker, who can score from anywhere on the field at any point in the game, can fit in the slot or outside. He can be put in position to run the football with some creative play-calling.

The impact Harvin should have on the real football field won't be measured just in his stats, though. If he realizes his potential, he'll take some attention away from both Adrian Peterson and Bernard Berrian. He'll accrue some personal numbers of his own, though. Check out the fantasy football ripple effect after the jump.

Chicago Media Still Showing Classy Side Concerning Rex Grossman

If you decided to visit the Chicago Tribune home page Thursday morning, you found the main story online is a countdown to when the Bears will "finally" cut Rex Grossman from the team. No, not just the sports page; the main page. It's more of a story than your latest Blagojevich news, two Illinois soldiers being killed in Afghanistan, and a discussion of President Obama's health-care plan. Grossman was apparently more newsworthy.

Attached to the "Countdown to Rex-ile" -- where it discusses fans "rehearsing" their "toasts" -- you'll find a story by David Haugh where he discusses how unfair Grossman's treatment has been in Chicago. Gee, I wonder where these fans are getting it?

Antonio Bryant Angry With Franchise Tag

By placing the franchise tag on him earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers guaranteed wide receiver Antonio Bryant a $9 million raise in 2009. And you know what? He's not really happy about that. Seems kind of odd for a guy that was out of football entirely in 2008.

Anwar S. Richardson of the Tampa Tribune reports that Bryant wanted to sign a long-term deal so he could have some security. Bryant's agent, Lamont Smith, claims that he may not sign the offer sheet and may be interested in testing the market or holding out.

Eagles 26, Vikings 14: No One's Benching McNabb Now

Stay on top of all the postseason action with FanHouse's NFL playoff coverage.

So Eagles fans, do you still want to see Donovan McNabb head elsewhere?

On a day when the Eagles' running game was non-existent, McNabb threw for 300 yards, generally ran the Eagles offense efficiently and made only two serious mistakes. With an Eagles' defense that's good enough to get this team to the Super Bowl, that was enough.

The Vikings had almost everything happen according to plan and they still lost by 12. Adrian Peterson broke off a long run with a 40-yard touchdown run and scored two touchdowns. Bernard Berrian got deep for a 27-yard catch and the Vikings pass rush sacked McNabb three times.

NFL Playoff Fantasy Football Guide

There are several different fantasy playoffs models, so it's difficult to accommodate everyone when doing any set of fantasy advice for the real playoffs. Most common models require you to do a bit of prognosticating as far as the actual game winners. To that, I say good luck. This isn't like last year, where we all knew the Patriots were going to the Super Bowl. This season the playoffs are wide open, and no, I don't think the Giants are a sure thing to make the big game. They are the surest bet, but it's still a bet.

Anyway, we're going to analyze some of the players.

First, here are the regular-season defensive rankings for the teams playing this postseason.

Team (overall rank, rushing rank, passing rank, scoring rank)

Pittsburgh Steelers (1, 2, 1, 1)
Baltimore Ravens (2, 3, 2, 3)
Philadelphia Eagles (3, 4, 3, 4)
New York Giants (5, 9, 8, 5)
Minnesota Vikings (6, 1, 18, 13)
Tennessee Titans (7, 6, 9, 2)
Indianapolis Colts (11, 24, 6, 7)
Miami Dolphins (15, 10, 25, 9)
Carolina Panthers (18, 20, 16, 12)
Arizona Cardinals (19, 16, 21, 28)
Atlanta Falcons (24, 25, 22, 11)
San Diego Chargers (25, 11, 31, 15)

Vikings Win NFC North on Last-Second Field Goal, Will Host Cowboys-Eagles Winner

The Minnesota Vikings won the NFC North on this Ryan Longwell 50-yard field goal as time expired:

Minnesota didn't exactly set the world on fire, needing a last-second field goal to beat a Giants team that was basically phoning it in as it rested its top players for the playoffs. But when the Vikings needed quarterback Tarvaris Jackson to deliver down the stretch, he did: Jackson hit Bernard Berrian for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Vikings fans have to feel good about that.

Next weekend the Vikings will host the winner of this afternoon's game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
